DREAMGIRLS’ DOMINATES AAFCA HONORS: Picture is group’s Best Film of 2006; Whitaker, Spike Lee also recognized.

*The African-American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) is the latest organization to heap praise upon the movie musical “Dreamgirls,” which leads the pack in the group’s honors for 2006.

The collective of African-American media professionals has recognized “Dreamgirls” in four categories: Best Picture of 2006, Best Supporting Actor for Eddie Murphy, Best Supporting Actress for Jennifer Hudson and Best Director for Bill Condon.

“‘Dreamgirls’ is an extraordinarily, breathtaking example of inclusive filmmaking at its best, featuring an all African-American cast in an intelligent film with universal appeal,” says AAFCA President Gil Robertson, IV. “The film will be a classic for people of all colors, but a special source of pride and inspiration for the black community in America and around across the globe.”

The AAFCA named Forrest Whitaker Best Actor for his role as Idi Amin in “The Last King of Scotland,” and bestowed its Best Actress award upon Helen Mirren for “The Queen.”

“Although our organization gives specific consideration to work by artists of African descent, Ms. Mirren’s audacious portrayal of Queen Elizabeth is undeniably brilliant and deserving of our recognition,” Robertson explains.

AAFCA presents its Special Achievement Honor to director Spike Lee, who enjoyed a career first 100 million dollar box office for “Inside Man” and delivered the insightful and compassionate HBO documentary “When the Levees Broke.”

“Our selection of Mr. Lee was unanimous as 2006 showcased an amazing synthesis of his talents as filmmaker, social activist and infotainer,” states AAFCA board member Lee Bailey, Executive Producer of Electronic Urban Report and RadioScope.

The AAFCA has also announced its Top Ten films of the year, in order of distinction:

1. Dreamgirls
2. The Last King of Scotland
3. The Departed
4. Akeelah & The Bee
5. Catch A Fire
6. Idlewild
7. Bobby
8. The Devil Wears Prada
9. Pursuit of Happyness
10. Inside Man

Isn't this like the third black awards already this year? Why the repetition?

Future Oscar winner?

I think so!

She was actually quite hot when she was younger.

Bwahahah, I love how Helen Mirren still manages to win at awards honoring African-Americans.

And, hey, The Devil Wears Prada got a nod here too. Heh

Very much so.

And for a 60-year-old, she's still quite good looking:

Wonder if she will also win the Gay Critics awards.

"Although Miss Mirren is neither gay nor male, she definitely deserves our recognition"

That's crazy. Mirren was amazing in The Queen, so I can see why they gave it to her, sorta...
