The Holiday

Quote:
The Holiday is a 2006 American romantic comedy film written, produced and directed by Nancy Meyers. Distributed by Columbia Pictures and Universal Studios, it stars Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet as two lovelorn women from opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean, who temporarily exchange homes to escape heartbreak during the holiday season. Jude Law and Jack Black co-star, with Eli Wallach, Shannyn Sossamon, Edward Burns, and Rufus Sewell playing key supporting roles.

Released to mixed or average reviews by critics, the film became a global box office success, grossing $205 million worldwide, mostly from its international run. Diaz garnered an ALMA Award nomination for her performance, while Winslet was nominated for an Irish Film and Television Award the following year. The film itself won the 2007 Teen Choice Award in the Chick Flick category.

Libs, question, one that may well determine if I pay to see this Friday.

Did you like Something's Gotta Give and/or What Women Want?

Haha sorry

Yeah I'm not entirely sure, but I kind of get the feeling you would not be a big fan of The Holiday if you didn't like What Women Want and Something's Gotta Give.

Yeah, both of those movies are baffling for me. I love the casts, the premises, the trailers....and both movies left me slack jawed at how flat and lifeless it all seemed.

This sounds like more of the same, which clearly isn't my cup of tea....but Jack Black! Kate Winslet! Jude Law! Ahhhh!

Oh just go see it anyway

You won't know until you do

I find it hard to believe you could actively hate a movie as fluffy as this

You'd be surprised!

But yes, I probably will be seeing it Friday. It'll go down well with Mel Gibson's apparent carnage-festival/extended foot race/cougar.

I loved Something's Gotta Give, but hated What Women Want. Hopefully I dig The Holiday.

Um, Something's Gotta Give rocks.

What Women Want? Not so much.

I'm lukewarm on The Holiday. I'll see it, though.

I didn't care for either of the Nancy Meyer's movies mentioned above, though I am a big fan of her remake of The Parent Trap. Perhaps she's better at making kids movies, because I found those other two films to be quite childish. I have almost zero interest in seeeing Holiday (it would be less than zero if it weren't for Kate Winslett). Just the sight of Jack Black's irritatingly unfunny mugging in the trailer makes me want to puke...

[Edit: Now I see the running time is 138 minutes (!) - is that really necessary for any rom-com?]

I went in not knowing what to expect. I love rom-coms, but wasn't enthused with the idea of Jack Black falling in love with Kate Winslett.

Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised, as what a fantastic movie this is. Sweet, charming, and hillarious. Predictable and cliched? Of course. But also wonderfully entertaining. A-

One of the warmest, sweetest, funniest and utterly enjoyable romantic comedies since Love Actually.

I kinda liked it. I thought that the part that takes place in America was very well done and rather real and engaging and likable, but that Diaz looked kinda like a bulldog and most of the England side was a lot way to over the top and face-slappy-sappy. But for the most part, Winslet's performance and the whole of her holiday made it enjoyable.

This is probably the best romcom i've ever seen. Much better than Somethings Gotta Give and even moreso than What Women Want, I can guarantee there wasn't a dry eye in the theater and I'm going to see it again this week.

I had wanted to see it for a while, but I didn't expect for it to be this good.
Hell I even liked Jude Law in this one.

The scene with Law and Diaz in the tent made me seriously well up, and the old man entering the writers guild tribute made my friends cry hysterically.

How does this compare to another holiday rom-com, Love Actually? Does it give you those warm fuzzies?

It wasn't as funny or well-made as Love Actually, but that's actually the movie The Holiday reminded me most of. It most definitely will give you the warm fuzzies unless you hate chick flicks or fluffy movies in general.

Here's my review: Jude Law is hot!!

I usually hate feeling warm and fuzzy but for some reason I didn't mind it this time. The cast is great (even the annoying Jack Black is sweet).

Great date movie for sure.

Just saw this tonight and have to say its absolutely delightful, cute, loveable and yes though its very different it did remind me of Love Actually too. The film gets a little slow about 20 mins in and its a little long - but this is substantiated by the fact you are watching two love stories and not one. As far as rom-coms go - its not side splittingly funny - but it has loads of charm. Also love the contrast between sunny (and windy) Cali vs the cold, snowy yet warm and Christmasy Surrey.

All four stars are quite strong and watch out for a few interesting cameos!! It was also good to see Eli Walach in his old Hollywood role.

Grade: A

BTW - To Libs and others who saw it (not a major spoiler):

[spoil]Did you think something happened to the film reel when the Universal logo came on and the film trailer featuring Lindsay Lohan came on? I did until I realised it was part of Diaz's trailer editor job   [/spoil]

Uh oh, this movie's at 100% A with 5 reviews here. Where's that one person who likes to give random F's to movies for no reason?

B-

Sweet? Yes. But the revelation about Graham's children ruined this for me. I agree with his point about departmentalizing his life, but drinking all night and one night stands while his children are at home. The girls were cute, but the scene was just so over the top that I nearly burst out laughing.

But Kate Winslet's story was by far the most interesting storyline I've seen all year. I honestly would of given this movie an A+ if her storyline was fleshed out into her own movie.

The acting was incredible, but nothing could stand in the way Meyer's weak writing. What an awful misstep!
