Poor BronZe. Didn't even have a post yet and you all scared him off.

Never claimed to be. But considering what's been entrusted to BTTF in the past, I thought he was a bit more mature.

I do however speak softly and carry a big stick. Yeah, I'm quoting Teddy.

LMS is still up on it's high pedestal while other films are left floundering with fake F's. Why not go back and change EVERY poll. I mean I haven't seen it yet but United 93 has an F. Why not go back and change that?

this sounds like a fun hobby, actually, and since Stamps are one of my favorites (We should trade some time BTTF!) I think I might join in. I'll probably not start until the Science of Sleep, after I see it this weekend though.

A truly enjoyable little gem of a movie full of Oscar worthy turns and snippets of comedy genius.

Abigail Breslin Is a shoo in for an oscar Nom judged in this performance and Arkin and Carrell aren't very far behind. It's not the most original movie around with the shadow of Alexander Payne looming large over large sections but damn if you just don't care by the pagent dance-off climax. Had to wait a long time to see this and it truly was worth the wait.

This is a funny fuckin' thread. I forgot all about it. Getting worked up over the fake F in the poll.

Anyways...

It is funny. Not hilarious, but really funny. The dance scene at the end was a riot. And the acting's great all around, especially Carell, though I'm a fan. The characters are great in this film - the horny coke-addict grandpa, the wannabe-mute son, the gay failed-suicide brother, the "WINNERS ARE NOT LOSERS" dad... all great. I agree with the few who said it's not the brilliant screenplay that some mentioned from the first page, but it's top notch. And no, I'm not giving it an A, it's not "OMG FANTASTIC." Just enjoyable.

You were "on notice" for your little BOM tirade last week. But now? You're dead to me.

In my defense, a B is pretty solid.

The D+ I could potentially give Children of Men should hurt more.

I'll leave the forum if that happens.

And don't get any smart ideas, it's just a figure of speech.

Really funny and extremely enjoyable. It was a wonderful and heartwarming film with some great performances all around. Loved every minute, i really didnt wanted the movie to end  .

The saw the alternate endings and i love the one when the Hoovers ran out of the hotel with the 1st prize trophy all happy and laughing  , that was excellent and it would of been IMO a better ending.

A+

Just watched it again and it is now definitely an A- instead of a B for me. Everything works in the movie except for Granpa's speech to the mute son, which went on for far too long.

An A for this great ensemble. It's hard to single anyone out, because everyone was great together. I loved the talent competition! One of the year's best.

Boring. Cliche dysfunctional family with decent but not especially good actors on a road trip of bonding. A few laughs might have been nice but were in short supply. By the time grandpa died it was seeming like National Lampoon's Vacation played serious, I almost expected them to strap him to the top. It was solidly crafted, just nothing special. It would fill the time on a plane ride but not something I'd recommend to a friend.

What more I could say. I watched twice in a four-hour period. Wish I could've seen it early and join the pandemonium. Perfect ensemble, and there is no one-noted character. Love how it ended; glad the writers didn't go for the implausibility of having Olive's charm won over the crowd/judges. Given how good the script was up to that point, I was pretty sure they wouldn't screw it up, but still impressed with how they handled it while still maintaining all the right tones. Paid a lot of attention to details from how Dad had to say "sorry" when being pulled over to how certain shots referred back to what was in the conversations before.

Where this movie truly succeeds are those "little moments". I haven't seen a film in a while that had as many wonderful little moments that this film had, and every single one of them rung true. While the movie was silly (comic), it's overall message was not a beat out of place. I was mightily impressed that there were so many moments in the film to which I could relate.

The film was beautiful until the family was putting their grandfather out the window and stuffing his body in the back of their bus. This, among other things, was too far reaching for me. The movie is a comedy, yes, but most everything was within some realm of possibility. And then that happened, and it got worse as the film went on. This would ruin the flow of the movie sometimes, as well as being just too unrealistic even for me. Mostly I just never thought a good family would subject Olive to such things.

Otherwise, a thoroughly enjoyable and emotional film, but truly the most genuine film you will have seen in a while; genuine in it's message. And it didn't try to speak to anything "higher" or "deeper". It just did what it did best. So many grand moments. Truly an ensemble piece, but the person who impressed me most was Paul Dano. "DIVORCE. BANKRUPTCY. SUICIDE. YOU GUYS ARE FUCKING LOSERS!" I loved how he played out the whole scene. This guy is a versatile actor too; I last saw him as a nerd in The Girl Next Door. And what can I say about Abigail Breslin? I was floored, absolutely floored, in the scene between Olive and her grandpa. I still cannot believe that she pulled that scene off so remarkably well.

A-

Peace,
Mike.

Quirky, off-beat comedy-drama that has its moments (and many of them), but never really takes off as either a hilarious comedy or an effective drama. The acting is fantastic across the board, so much so that it's impossible to pick a highlight, and the writing is sharp, but the story never really involves the viewer and the characters aren't especially endearing. Still, this is a very well-made movie, with some hilarious moments and some touching ones, that isn't great but is still pretty good.
