I agree there is a chance of Happy Feet having a really small ratio like that. But I had
noticed it's all over the yahoo main page so I thought the ratio would be a bit higher. Also,
it seems to me that this film is a little bit more anticipated than some of the recent animated
films since it's been marketed so heavily for so long, so I thought people would be more
likely to review it, leading to a slightly higher ratio. That's my reasoning for bumping the
ratio up to 70. We'll see though.

Strangely, though, ratios for movies appearing on the Yahoo home page have not been affected since the transition. What we'll look for is pacing - if Happy Feet is getting tons of reviews each hour, it's likely we could see a higher ratio. Remember, Cars was on the main page for over half a day this summer and still had a normal ratio (58.69).

I'm in general consenus with xiayun on the ratios. I could see 100 for CR due to the history of the franchise and expected heavy reviews. I have Happy Feet at 55 - higher than Open Season & Barnyard, but slightly lower than Cars & Over The Hedge.

I'd say Casino Royale around 100 too, that the UK had the biggest opening day for Bond film yesterday is going to pack a fair amount of votes in.

Not a big deal, but could we update the thread title for this week's openers? Thanks.

The Forecaster is already indicating a very high probability of a $50M+ weekend for Casino Royale.

Who is "The Forecaster" and why should we care what he thinks?

The Forecaster is a spreadsheet projection program that I developed, and nobody has to care what it says. This is based on using very high ratios and low projection multipliers as a guesstimate.

Yeah, internationally release should bump the ratio up for Casino Royale. Agree that a ratio of 100 is more likely.

I don't think it shares the same engine with the other international Yahoo sites

The UK definitely does not: http://uk.movies.yahoo.com/c/Casino-Roy ... 41272.html

Hmm, very interersting. So if you navigate to Yahoo.com in the UK, you don't see the same page as we do in the U.S.?

No...Yahoo.com would work for them

Yahoo.com would point to the US address
Yahoo.co.uk would point to the UK address (UK news, financial info, Premiership scores on the front page, etc.)

I don't know which ones Brits use more, but I would imagine it would be the UK address

That sounds like a very cool program. How does it work?

In simplest terms, it compares current pacing with a growing database of previously tracked films to project the most likely outcome. It factors in clogging, genre trends, a ratio bell curve (work in progress), as well as non-Yahoo factors, including MTC tracking comparisons and BOM poll results. I've tried working the buzz charts into the formula, but they've been scrapped for being too erratic. I'm sure many will think I'm crazy and that the program is a piece of crap, but I have measured marked improvement in the last six weeks. It's still FAR from perfect, though.

Much of my info prior to 2006 was provided to me by Horlicks, and I have kept it updated as best as I can. He did an awesome job with compiling data.

It doesn't mean they all use uk.yahoo.com though. I know a lot of my friends back in China still use http://www.yahoo.com to browse movies, not cn.yahoo.com. Having an international release simply increases the opportunity of those who grade the film using the main Yahoo engine from outside the U.S.

I prefer the US Yahoo compared to yahoo.com.au. Too much advertising on the Australian version, because Yahoo! AU is half-owned by a local television station. Cross-promotion is irritating.

Casino Royale is on the front page with the photo and both lines directly linking to its user reviews. The written-to-overall ratio should be close to 1:3.

Happy Feet has a couple of big ads, but they don't link to its main page. May still increase the awareness to grade it, but the effect should be small.

Happy Feet is likely in the 130-150 range, which is quite good for this hour. Casino Royale is probably a little higher - I'm thinking 500-550.
