I'm Now OFFICIALLY Predicting ROCKY BALBOA To BOMB..
Call it a hunch, but I think Sylvester Stallone has stuck his hand in the cookie jar one to many times with this character and I just don't think there's an audience for another ROCKY movie in this day and age.. It's tired, it's dead and it's almost being made into a mockery at this point for an exceptional actor/director like Stallone is wasting his time doing another one of these movie's instead of showcasing his talents behind the camera.. I haven't heard 1 peep about this movie outside the internet, not 1 commercial for a movie coming out in what?? 3 weeks?? The plotline they have for this movie is absurd and I really think this is gonna sink and no one will buy into this..

Your kidding, right??? ESPN has an internet matchup between ROCKY and whatever loser they pit him against based on the poll results that turns into a comeback of sorts for ROCKY in stepping back into the Ring to fight the guy he beat on the internet??? Is that how I'm to understand this?? I mean correct me if I'm wrong, but it's something to that effect and if if it is, then it's a lame plotline no one will buy into, especially Stallone at age 60.. It really boils down to the fact that ROCKY had it's time and place in movie history, but times have changed and today's audience is not gonna give a hoot about ROCKY 6..

Internet matchup? You mean a virtual matchup?
As it's explained in the trailer (Which I'm sure you've seen. You do at least watch trailers, right?) it simulates what the fight would've been like when Rocky was in his prime. He wins, he feels the urge to fight again, his family tries to reason with him, promoters get involved, he fights.
Will audiences buy that? I don't know. I personally think they will. It's a holiday film and there is nothing better than once again rooting for the underdog. And it's certainly not implausible. I'm not sure if it happened in the same fashion, but just look at George Foreman.
I was on the fence before, but the thread pushed me over. The opening weekend might not be fantastic ($20 million tops) but it'll go on to make at least $70 million, despite the competition.

Depends on your definition of a bomb. It's easy to not give any numbers and then if it makes "just" $50m, you could call it a bomb. In my opinion, a bomb would be $30m or less. Is that what you're predicting, BKB?

Basic Instinct 2 all over again. At least Rocky is rated PG, which should be good for a couple more mil. or so.

No way. It's been on the buzz charts for weeks and continues to have a solid IMDB ranking. Further, it's been one of the top 20 viewed trailers on Yahoo for 10 days - a sign that momentum is increasing closer to release. I don't want to see it do well, but have a feeling it will be a $20M opener.

Didn't we have a similar situation with SOAP and Dahlia? Since it's opening on Wed. a 20-mil. five-day total is possible but the other sports movie will nail it hard come Friday.

I think it's pretty much guaranteed to make healthy profit. Isn't the budget really low? If this films reaches close to 40 million, it's already a very solid success.
So: a bomb? No, I don't think so.

It will make a small ripple and fade away fast. When I saw the trailer with him wearing the same hat from 1978 I just had to laugh, it was like watching a parody on The Simpsons.

So your officially predicting it to bomb. What about the year coming up to the release where you did nothing but bitch over it. I have to hand it to you BKB, you just ensured it will be a hit. Your always the complete opposite in your "I predict threads".

Im very surprised by the prescreen reactions for the film and the reports were coming from people who had low expectations for the film but ended up enjoying the movie very much. They werent plants either since they had previous posts going back 2 years ago.

While I do think it'll be the best New MGM opening weekend by a few million there has been no indication that MGM has the
kind of pull with theatre chains to pull off some kind of smash opening.
That said, if there's one movie I've been asked about in December, it's Rocky Balboa, especially from East Coast NY/PHILLY/NJ
area patrons and business partners, so that may be enough to do ROCKY 5 business, inflation adjusted.
Which..holy carp, would be 20 million. Which I think is still a little high but maybe remotely possible.

Rocky 5 did 14.5 million 16 years ago. Adjusted thats close to 20 million so its possible to open over that amount

Rocky 3 and 4 openings would adjust to over 40 million today.

I wont go as far as reaching for Rocky 3 & 4's number since he was at the time the biggest star in the world and the franchise itself was huge at the time adjusting to 300 million

I'm surprised at the number of inquiries I've had at my theater. I really didn't think anyone cared about this franchise anymore. I can see it opening to $20M or so.

It will do well for the simple reason that people will want to wash the memory of Rocky 5 out of their heads.

I don't think it will "bomb" but it may disappoint, depending on the budget. And if it's dependent on the budget, that means it will barely break 100M at most. Might be a nice counterprogramming to Night at the Museum.
BKB is right about the lame set-up though. I saw the commercial with the two guys fighting in the viedo game, then Stallone deciding to fight for real and I was thinking What the heck is this?

THANK YOU.. The whole plotline for this is absurd and is grasping and reaching to find a story for this character to fight.. I just feel the audience has had their share of Stallone and ROCKY and that peak time was the 80's and early 90's.. Today is far different and people like Stallone and now Bruce Willis ressurecting his DIE HARD Franchise with not only a lame title they have for it, but it to has a lame plot setup as well and it's to the point where the public is laughing about it.. These 2 actors made 100's of Millions of Dollars Galore in their time$$$ and if they didn't invest their $$$ well over the years to the point where they have to resort to revisiting these characters for 1 last hurrah, then it has become a Parody of itself that would be best suited for MAD TV or SNL..

If Rocky fails it will only be because the movie is absolutely not what people expect it to be. There's not as much pounding as you might think when you consider the last outings. The boxing is only a side aspect

you got the plot line wrong.
it looks like few people here are familiar with Discovery's 'vs' show. the plot line suggested here is actually something that happens on TV right now, except it focusses more on animals. but the principle remains the same.
