 John Q
John Q Quote: John Q is a 2002 film directed by Nick Cassavetes starring Denzel Washington as John Quincy Archibald, a father and husband whose son is diagnosed with an enlarged heart and then finds out he cannot receive a transplant because HMO insurance will not cover it. Therefore, he decides to take a hospital full of patients hostage until the hospital puts his son's name on the recipient's list.
The film also stars Anne Heche, James Woods, Ray Liotta, Eddie Griffin and Robert Duvall, among others. The film was shot in Toronto, Hamilton, Ontario (ballpark scenes), and Canmore, Alberta, although the story takes place in Chicago.

Surprisingly good. Denzel gives his usual strong performance, and the story was very good, though it had some plot holes.

Very forgettable. Not bad, but not horrible, either.

Decent but overly preachy drama with another great performance from Denzel Washington. Recommended.

Denzel is always good, as is Kimberly Elise. If I remember correctly, it had a lot more humor than I expected. The story was a little too preachy, but I guess that's OK considering the subject matter. I grade it a B-.

Denzel Washington is a great actor and at least he isn't playing a cop again in this movie. Still the movie itself, despite an interesting premise, rarely elevates above average.

 Re: John Q.
It's solidly made and everything, but it's so obvious and so heavy-handed that it makes the whole thing feel disingenuous. It's an entertaining watch, and the acting is good, but that's all I can give it.

 Re: John Q.
interesting concept, a great performance by Denzel, but my oh my was that ending as stupid and Hollywood as they get. Excluding the incredibly unrealistic sense of time -- where he is a second away from killing himself when his wife arrives with the heart for their son -- what I hated was how everything worked out so well for a guy who was doing something so obviously stupid and illegal. Everyone in the hospital loved and protected him, and it seemed like the only people who recognized what he was really doing were the cops. It was just too made-for-excitement for my taste. Still, an entertaining film. C

 Re: John Q.
I liked it. I was hoping it would avoid the "We need national healthcare" slant. It started out as movie speaking out against inaction/slow action and beuracracy, which I could have dug. I thought it was just screaming that when the newreporter guy was approached to do some sort of human interest story and says that he'll have to pass that on to his producers. Then he's seen basically immeadiately when John takes the hospital.
Denzel was great. The "See you later" speech was absolutely brutal, but I think the rest of the emotional impact was too much Hollywood manipulation and not enough genuine drama.

I saw it on an airplane and it felt like an airplane movie
It's decent enough, but forgettable.
