The film's title refers to its primary antagonist: a highly aggressive extraterrestrial creature which stalks and kills the crew of a spaceship. Dan O'Bannon wrote the screenplay from a story by him and Ronald Shusett, drawing influence from previous works of science fiction and horror. The film was produced through Brandywine Productions and distributed by 20th Century Fox, with producers David Giler and Walter Hill making significant revisions and additions to the script. The titular Alien and its accompanying elements were designed by Swiss surrealist artist H. R. Giger, while concept artists Ron Cobb and Chris Foss designed the human aspects of the film. Alien garnered both critical acclaim and box office success, receiving an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, Saturn Awards for Best Science Fiction Film, Best Direction for Scott, and Best Supporting Actress for Cartwright, and a Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation, along with numerous other award nominations. It has remained highly praised in subsequent decades, being inducted into the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress in 2002 for historical preservation as a film which is "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". In 2008 it was ranked as the seventh-best film in the science fiction genre by the American Film Institute, and as the thirty-third greatest movie of all time by Empire magazine. The success of Alien spawned a media franchise of novels, comic books, video games, and toys, as well as three sequel and two prequel films. It also launched Weaver's acting career by providing her with her first lead role, and the story of her character Ripley's encounters with the Alien creatures became the thematic thread that ran through the sequels Aliens (1986), Alien 3 (1992), and Alien Resurrection (1997). The subsequent prequels Alien vs. Predator (2004) and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (2007) abandoned this theme in favor of a crossover with the Predator franchise. Next to the Star Wars Saga, the Alien dualogy (that's not a word but I know you guys know what I mean) is were Sci-Fi is at. A masterpiece in every way. Brilliant acting, suspense, conclusion, ending. A ++++

Dr. Lecter You must have big rats Joined: Sat Oct 16, 2004 4:28 pm Posts: 92093 Location: Bonn, Germany	A- It is hard to appreciate this movie nowadays considering that it was overshadowed by millions of cheap rip-off's that followed this pehnomenon in the years after its release, but if you think about the year it was released in you can't help, but admire the achievement which might be not so perfect at times, but nonetheless has to be appreciated for its feat. Ridley Scott created one of the best movies in the sci-fi genre (and much better than the overrated Blade Runner) and as far as I remember he was the first to successfully combine science-fiction with horror without coming across as a cheap B-flick. Maybe it is a B-flick, but certainly a very effective one. I still consider it inferior to Cameron's masterpiece Aliens, but it is an entirely different movie on its own. While Aliens is a well-crafted, huge-scale actioner, this one is much more of an intimate and creepy horror movie. There is not too much blood to be seen, but what is seen (and I am speaking of the chestburster) is very effective. The pacing is well-done and the movie manages to stay suspenseful throughout the entire second half of it once all hell breaks loose. With Weaver's Ripley, Scott created the first real female action hero, only rivaled in her status by Linda Hamilton's Sarah Connor and Uma Thurman's The Bride. The acting, while not oscar-worthy, is decent all-around, especially by Weaver (who of course gets even better in Aliens). The movie goes the smart way of not showing too much of the monster and thereby keeping up the suspense level. I wish more horror flicks would go this route nowadays. The movie, unfortunately, underplays the science-fiction aspect a little too much in my opinion, but then again it does its best with what it had back in the late 70's. This movie might not be one of my very favorites, but there is no denying the fact that it stands as a milestone in its genre, just like its successor Aliens which elevated sci-fi action to an entirely different level. _________________ The greatest thing on earth is to love and to be loved in return!

Heinrich Himmler Cream of the Crop Joined: Sat Oct 16, 2004 5:17 pm Posts: 2716 Location: Berlin, Germania	so i watched it again yesterday on dvd, and its an A+ worthy film for sure. watched camerons aliens too and its really hard to tell which one is better. i think i'll give scotts original the edge because it still scares the shit out of me when i watch it today. i jump everytime i see the alien lurking around a corner when ripley tries to flee the nostromo at the end. its a little wonder that this film from the late 70s doesnt feel a bit dated, haircuts aside. scott seems to have a special talent for this, because blade runner is fresher than ever, too.

Great acting and direction, make this a timeless classic film. I have the 9 box set, and although Aliens is my favorite in the series, Alien is no 2nd best film, there just too great different to rank on the same scale. By limiting the number of characters, and enclosing them in a confined space, Scott hikes up the tension without having to resort to cheap thrills or buckets of gore (though the chest-bursting scene is still terrifyingly effective). Each of the characters is fairly well developed, and it's unclear at the start who will live and who will not, which also upps the suspense. The production design is really cool, and doesn't look dated at all, and the alien creature itself is quite original and still scary. It's a simple idea for a film - A ship takes off with an alien on-board, and when it becomes a beast, the crew is trapped on the ship, nowhere to go or escape from it. But god, is it ever suspensful. The deaths of the crew members, the way the alien is shot creeping up to them, perfect. Even a close-up on the cat's eyes as it walks away from the man in front of him just killed, or the first shot of the egg, or the birth scene in the stomach, or most of all the final encounter in the pod... Ridley Scott is an absolute GOD of cinematography and suspense angles here. In fact, I'd go as far to say that Alien's level of suspense in it's camera work equals and even surpasses some of the best of Hitchcock's work. I love the build-up of the film and the landing on the planet, as well as the fact that there is no exposition of what year it is or how far the human race has come - It just gives you the advanced world straight up. We don't know much about the characters as they get stalked, but we care anyways. The performances are all great, with the standouts being a very hot Sigourney Weaver as iconic Ripley and Ian Holm as Ash. One of the best sci-fi films ever, one of the best horror films ever.
