And the gloating begins. It should be time to bump the "under 200 million club" and "over 250 club" and laugh at them

Technically not, since $200-210m falls in the $200-250m club, but nice try, Mr. $250m+.

w/e supermans late legs were astonishing, and have made its average weekend rop to just a 24.53% average weekend drop.
a sequels defienly happening now, well have to wait for dvd sales to see how big itll be.
and i estimate that without pirates 2 so close, superman woulda done roughly 250/240.
w/e bring on superman 2!

Does it matter what it "could" have done without Pirates? I mean, even with Pirates, you still predicted $250m+. It obviously didn't seem like a threat at that point.

Well, all I can say is yes, I knew I'd get it. And BKB's thread was a knockoff of this thread. IMAX did help it, but then again what doesnt Imax help these days. It of course helped Superman a little more with the 3d format, but its pretty standard these days for the high profile films.
When it comes down to it, Superman Returns was in fact a success, with the final budget estimate coming in at 204 million, and has not been challenged since.

I know my thread will be getting bumped in the next couple weeks.
Oh whatever. Gay IMAX in the fall should be counted seperate, it's actual theatre run didn't come close.
Just kidding. I know I lost. And I'm sad.
I did have fun gloating though, and this is so after the season, I still take it as a minor victory. It still underperformed, 200 mil is just a number after all, calling against it was still a victory.
By the way, the real winners here are: a) The guy who made the under Batman Begins club, and b) Dr. Lecter, who predicted 201 million. Bastard.
The movie still sucks anyways.

Just stop, alright?? When it comes right down to it, the movie couldn't even break 200 Million DOMESTICALLY and therefore, this movie was a huge bust and that's the end of it..

OH BKB, I'll never get to change your mind, and thats ok.
And it will cross 200 million domestically, Something your precious hulk couldnt do despite opening 10 million higher and falling 68 million short. That movie fell 35 million from breaking even on its 140 million budget. Superman is only 18 million away from breaking even on its Budget in theaters. It no doubt leviated the budget through backend deals, merchandising. It will make a probably 200 million WW in DVD Sales, not even counting the ultimate Superman Box Set, another 100million in rentals. Superman is not as big as he once was, but he still end up making a pretty penny for WB.
Get over yourself, it was a disappointment, not a bust. Superman Returns was a hit much like the Hulk, and when you think about it, considering sequels will no doubt get made, its in a much better situation.

Yeah it certainly did, I think it made about $23m from IMAX cinemas domestically which is quite amazing when you consider how many IMAX cinemas there most be. I wonder how much SM3 will benefit from this next year.

Question about IMAX: Where are the IMAX theatres anyway? I've only seen them in museums when they've played educational stuff, not mainstream movies. It seems to be that people didn't go to specifically see Superman, but rather they went to whatever was showing on IMAX. Oh well, it Supes crosses $200M, it crosses $200M. Not a big deal for me, cuz I got what *I* wanted, and that was for Pirates to destroy Superman, which it did.

erendis... i saw superman on imax at the carnegie science center in downtown pittsburgh. museums do show feature films, but they have to be tentpoles. i dont think they showed willy wonka there last year.
theres another imax in pittsburgh as well.... thats in a mall though.
as for washington, where i live now, there are like 2 or 3 imaxs in the area and one of them i know is the imax at the smithsonian air and space museum.... they had superman returns there too in the end of july when i stopped by to visit.

The other one is at Natural History. Museum stuff again.
If IMAX had shown Pirates, Supes wouldn't never have gotten close to $200M.

Theres one in Atlantic City in the Tropicana Casino. There all over the place. There not just in museums. And Erendis, I saw Pirates on Imax. and it most likely made That's where I see the majority of the big movies. Superman would have gotten close to 200 without Imax, probably around 195 million. It helped it in its later run, but it not necessarily was a huge bump.

I wonder how much SM3 will benefit from this next year. It's even higher. It made around $30 million in IMAX, and those numbers are close to a month old now. I think you're looking at something like $32 million or around there. Erendis wrote: Question about IMAX: Where are the IMAX theatres anyway? They're randomly located from as far as I can tell. There's probably at least one in every major city. The only example I can provide for sure is Boston because I live there. For the city itself there are two IMAX theaters. One is located at the The Museum of Science and the other at the New England Aquarium. Towards the end of the film's run, it played at the Aquarium, and as far as I can tell, that's the only major motion picture to ever play there.
I did say though that it was random. There are two other IMAX locations in Massachusetts and they both happen to be in furniture stores (Jordan's Furniture). One in is Natick, MA (Where I saw Superman) and the other is in Reading. The odd thing is both aren't too far away from each other, and both are about 45-60 minutes outside of the city. And both of them are kind of in the middle of nowhere. People from Massachusetts know where these cities are, but for anyone visiting who wanted to go see an IMAX film, would have to go well out of their way.
Superman played in Natick and Reading until Open Season opened. Then it moved to the New England Aquarium where it recieved it's first Boston Downtown opening (3 Months after the release). That made little sense to me because you would figure more people would go see it in the city. And then as for another possible IMAX location to get more people to go, I could see one being located down on Cape Cod, because that's a more populated area. To have two theaters in the middle of nowhere makes no sense.

Technically you saw PIRATES "in Giant Screen" basically using a 35mm print run on a separate 35mm projector blown up to fill most of an IMAX screen. Occasionally there are lightened prints that present better.

It recieved another low drop in theater counts (45). It's now down to 303 theaters. This is going to be might close with the weekend total. If it doesn't get to the mark, it'll make it by Tuesday at the latest.

If it makes it between Sunday and Tuesday, that's 118-120 days to hit $200m.
Some people expected that within three weeks.

And some expected $300m+. What's your point? $180m is still a hell of a lot closer than $250m and $300m.

I didn't think Spiderman was going to be on IMAX. I know the big summer movie for Imax next year is OOTP.

Well, what are you going to do? Honestly, at this point who gives a shit what people predicted?
I thought it was going to make $250 and it came up well short. The fact that it's going to pull around the same numbers as Batman Begins is pretty good though. And just like The Dark Knight, chances are the sequel is going to do much better. Both sequels won't pull in Spider-Man numbers (Unless both are perfect movies and face zero competition) but they should both finish with around $230-$300 million.
