Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo [The Good, the Bad and...]
The Good, the Bad and the UglyQuote: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (Italian: Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo) is a 1966 Italian/Spanish epic spaghetti western film directed by Sergio Leone, starring Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef, and Eli Wallach in the title roles. The screenplay was written by Age & Scarpelli, Luciano Vincenzoni and Leone, based on a story by Vincenzoni and Leone. Director of photography Tonino Delli Colli was responsible for the film's sweeping widescreen cinematography and Ennio Morricone composed the famous film score, including its main theme. It is the third and final film in the Dollars Trilogy following A Fistful of Dollars (1964) and For a Few Dollars More (1965). The plot revolves around three gunslingers competing to find a fortune in buried Confederate gold amid the violent chaos of gunfights, hangings, American Civil War battles and prison camps.

A rushed review that'll look embarrasing when I wake up tomorrow.
I wish I could find that damn theme someplace. I love it.
Anyways, some parts are cheesy, but the cinematography is stunning at times, even if the country looks barren. It gets a LITTLE slow in the middle and the Civil War scene almost seems out of place.
Leone is a master at build up. The actual gun duel at the end isn't much, but I'd like to complement Leone for building it up and suggesting that something big WOULD happen.
And, the constant hangings and shootings were amusing.
The strongest point in the film, however, is the fact that none of the three characters come out as good, bad, or ugly.
A - #30 on my Top Movies list
And this was the first Western I ever watched...

This was also the very first western I've ever watched. I loved it, but obviously not more than other people. The cast and cinematography is great, the movie itself is entertaining, and the score... wow. Definatly worth a watch if you haven't seen it yet.

As good as they come. Entertainment at its best. Thoroughly enjoyable even after 37 years and over 100 viewings. The background music i.e. A Soldier's tale, The Ecstasy of Gold, the title, the showdown and the credits, is awesome.

What shall I say? It is an undeniable masterpiece. Best western ever made and best movie starring Clint Eastwood. Best Sergio Leone film as well and has one of the best soundtracks I have ever heard. The story is great, the acting is good and the showdown is one of the very best ever.

It is the movie equivalent to me of a book that you like on a line by line basis because you just enjoy the writing more than the story itself. It is just immensely watchable, scene by scene was well composed, acted, written, it could have rambled on for another 2 hours and I'd have not minded even if the story didn't end up making a whole lot of sense. The movie has a relaxed and comfortable confidence in itself.
It also has some ridiculous aspects that I find charming, such as the civil war battle they run into way out in the west -- the civil war wasn't fought in the far west. Only in a spaghetti western.....

I agree about the book metaphor, Archie. That's very true. I never thought of it that way. More people should post such good analogies.
Yes, there is no story. I had arguements about this with my sister because the other three siblings were incredibly bored by it. They said anyone could have been shot at the end and it wouldn't have mattered. I said that's the point. The title is a complete tongue-in-cheek statement about the fact that nothing distinguished Blondie, Tuco, and Sentenza except for maybe access to an army, and the fact that Eli isn't quite as stoic as Clint. They all just want the money and will do whatever it takes to get it.
I think the beauty of the movie is Tuco running around the graveyard with that chorus of voices and bells in the background. The humor, their exchanges, and the broad suggestion that the west was nothing more than men trying to strike gold in dem bar hills (which it was).
The crowning Leoni film, I even liked it better than Once Upon a Time in the West.

Seen it again recently, this time in theatres. Superb flick, one of my 50 all-time favorites for sure. The final threeway showdown is still chilling and suspenseful due to masterful direction of the scene, even though I have seen it numerous times before.
More people here should see it

The score is just amazing. There are points in the movie, where characters just stare at each other for a few minutes, which would normally be really boring, but the score just elevates the movie to another level.
Oh yeah, and the movie is pretty good too. It's not just about the music!

One of the best movies ever made. So many classic scenes. The 3 way standoff, the Civil War battle for the bridge the list goes on.
The Special Edition DVD is just as impressive.

Re: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
is this a guy film...
meaning women would find this film pointless and stupid.
I was with My sister and Cousins and my cousin (a male) was saying it was great but my sister found the last duel way too long.
Anyways great film, a real western film that is epic.
The first half is slow but the film really picks up steam in the 2nd half.

Re: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
I don't really care too much for westerns, but a friend of mine had me watch this movie this last summer as he loves it, and to my surprise so did I. I give it a B+, but for a movie like this, that's great coming from me.

Re: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
Without a doubt one of the finest movies I have come across... both one of the most entertaining films I've seen and one of the most masterfully directed.
Tuco is definitley one of my favorite anti-heroes now, I agree with dolce that the scene with him running through the graveyard was one of my favorites. I also loved the bathtub part: "When you have to shoot, shoot. Don't talk"
Best score ever too.
5/5
