Ratios with actuals:

The Covenant - 135.29
Hollywoodland - 118.31
The Protector - 162.56

With a busier weekend coming up and some big films next month, let's hope Yahoo! continues to work smoothly.

It technically should be a good comparison, but considering how strong it's been on the Yahoo Buzz Chart, I wouldn't be surprised to see a significantly higher ratio. Perhaps closer to Sin City's ratio of 164.

Sin City had the front page. Also, Tokyo Drift had a hugely inflated buzz score, but didn't have that high of a ratio, so I'm not sure what it will mean. I think a ratio as low as 70 is possible, although I'll guess 95 or so. Perhaps it will even be 130. I think there are quite a few factors so it's not easily predictable.

I can't see it being any lower than Hollywoodland's ratio, especially given the online buzz. Right now I think Dahlia will fall in the 125-150 range, but we should get a better idea once we see how it starts out of the gate. If the first 5 or 6 updates aren't very large, it will likely have a sub-100 ratio.

Well I think in order to analyze Black Dahlia, you have to wonder what is triggering the affect on the yahoo buzz chart. I cant really explain Tokyo Drift's huge appearance but SOAP and Sin City are easily understandable because Sin City is based on a graphic novel combined with the Tarentino/ Robert Rodriguez following that inflates its score. As for SOAP, it was a joke being used in the net, lots of website dedication because of the title, campiness like Rocky Horror show. I dont see Black Dahlia falling into those categories unless Brian Depalma has a big following on the net or that Severed has alot of readers too

What I do know about Dahlia is the (perhaps surprising?) teen interest in the film, and regardless if they are Depalma fans or not, that demo is definitely Internet savvy. Surely, there must some curiosity in the story, and I know there is a viable fanbase for the book, judging by a literary forum search I did. I expected Hollywoodland to have a lower ratio, so I can find no reason to justify Dahlia having a lower ratio when you consider that a bulk of its audience stands to be fairly young.

Xiayun, do you use Excel for the table on page 1? If so, how hard would it be to post a sortable table of all the ratios in ascending/descending order? Could the Excel file be made available to all of us? As the list continues to grow, I'm trying to think of easy ways to organize these ratios. Separating them by genre would be helpful, but I know an idea like that is labor intensive and time consuming.

Page 1 has been all manual labor, unfortunately. Horlicks asked me the same question too (and I apologize for forgetting to reply, my friend). I know I should've put all the numbers in Excel and use a modified version of Krem's table converter, but just haven't spent time on doing that. DP might have one.

No biggie. As long we have a list that's periodically updated, that's more than enough. I think we've been doing this long enough where we can make ballpark guesses without even looking at Page 1. I'm sure it's a pain updating the table, so I speak for all of us when I say we greatly appreciate the time and effort you put into it.

Post Ratio Roundup - 9/15
I know many of you are in class this time of year, so I figured I'd post this today to get some feedback during the overnight hours. Here are my preliminary thoughts on the 9/15 openers:

Gridiron Gang - Comparisons Used:

Invincible - 77
Friday Night Lights - 114
Glory Road - 190
Walking Tall - 321

Even though Walking Tall had a very high ratio, this film is clearly not Internet driven, is more about football than an individual, and is all but absent on the Yahoo/IMDB charts. "The Rock" should guarantee a higher ratio than Invincible and Friday Night Lights, but the high theater count and quiet Internet presence leads me to believe something in the range of 130-150 is reasonable.

The Black Dahlia - Comparisons Used:

Hollywoodland - 118
Sin City - 164
Lucky Number Slevin - 273

Hollywoodland's ratio came in higher than expected last weekend, and with the online buzz Dahlia has sustained for weeks, I think 150 will be the minimum. I don't believe Lucky Number Slevin is the best comparison (L.A. Confidential would have been good), but Sin City is pretty decent. I think Dahlia will be more teen driven, but the lower overall ratios this year should cancel out the difference. 150-170.

The Last Kiss - Comparisons Used:

Cinderella Story - 261
The Wedding Date - 302
The Perfect Man - 317

None of these are ideal matches, but the ratio should be comparatively high. The theater count and tracking are low, and the primary demo for this (teens, young adults) is Internet savvy. I'll say 275-300 for now.

Everyone's Hero - Comparisons Used:

Over The Hedge - 60
Shark Tale - 64
Madagascar - 76

IMO, the target demo for this is very young, so a double-digit ratio is highly likely. I'll go with 65-75.

As always, feedback is welcome.

I expect Everyone's Hero to have a low grade, which should push the ratio higher. Not Hoot territory, but over 100 is probable.

The Last Kiss is a R-rated romantic comedy, and the name of Paul Haggis also attracts more adults, so I actually don't expect a high ratio. I see a Garden State type of ratio (138.76).

I believe Walking Tall had frontpage. Given the theater count, I'd say 100-120 for Gridiron Gang.

That's a good point about Last Kiss - plus, Braff isn't really a heartthrob or anything, and the obvious choice comparison-wise is Garden State.

The chart on the first page of this thread is really fantastic, and it's hard to duplicate (at least for the basic Excel user) because if you do change up the list (say, alphabatize it), it'll work, but the links won't copy back to the forum. Like...

[table][row]Title[col]# of reviews[col]Box Office[col]Ratio[row]13 Going on 30[col]999[col]$7,382,906 [col]135.31[row]A Cinderella Story[col]1,440[col]$5,515,274 [col]261.09[row]Aeon Flux[col]747[col]$4,669,229 [col]159.98[row]Alexander[col]2,161[col]$3,995,442 [col]540.87[row]Alien Vs Predator[col]2,750[col]$16,442,987 [col]167.24[row]Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid[col]652[col]$4,384,824 [col]148.69[row]Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy[col]1,577[col]$10,758,102 [col]146.59[row]Annapolis[col]821[col]$2,662,183 [col]308.39[row]Are We There Yet?[col]652[col]$5,481,367 [col]118.95[row]ATL[col]1,301[col]$4,566,669 [col]284.89[row]Bad News Bears[col]694[col]$4,150,091 [col]167.22[row]Batman Begins (Friday)[col]2,698[col]$15,072,242 [col]179[row]Batman Begins (Wednesday)[col]2,586[col]$15,068,368 [col]171.62[row]Be Cool[col]775[col]$8,179,924 [col]94.74[row]Beauty Shop (Friday)[col]876[col]$4,378,782 [col]200.06[row]Bewitched[col]1,998[col]$7,586,225 [col]263.37[row]Big Momma's House 2[col]3,521[col]$8,374,500 [col]420.44[row]Blade: Trinity (Friday)[col]925[col]$5,309,000 [col]174.23[row]Blade: Trinity (Wednesday)[col]798[col]$5,521,319 [col]144.53[/table]

If the link isn't a concern, I could help out with making charts by genre and stuff. If we want the links, which is useful, I'd say, then I'm not sure where to go from there.

That would be great, Zing. I don't see any need for the links after a few weeks. Does anyone else?

I think they're nice to have, if we wanted to check how many a certain film has without typing it in, but it's not 100% necessary. I'm making some charts right now.

Well, I've made charts for about seven or eight genres, as well as the full chart in alphabetical order, ratio order, and just an updated version of xiayun's total reviews order, but all these charts won't fit in this thread. Might need to toss them into the Thread Archive thread, because I don't see the point in a whole new thread or replacing xiayun's posts (which are better, because they have links). All the genre charts are in order of ratio, since that's what the basic use of the charts will be. Here's what horror looks like, for an example...

[table][row]Title[col]# of reviews[col]Box Office[col]Ratio[row]Pulse[col]310[col]$3,482,547 [col]89.03[row]The Descent[col]342[col]$3,389,298 [col]100.91[row]Exorcist: The Beginning[col]714[col]$7,022,128 [col]101.68[row]The Omen (Friday)[col]589[col]$5,652,750 [col]104.20[row]Dawn of the Dead[col]1,214[col]$10,856,475 [col]111.82[row]The Omen (Tuesday)[col]1,419[col]$12,633,666 [col]112.32[row]The Forgotten[col]862[col]$7,619,695 [col]113.13[row]Wolf Creek (Sunday)[col]323[col]$2,805,754 [col]115.12[row]The Hills Have Eyes[col]659[col]$5,620,251 [col]117.25[row]Open Water[col]465[col]$3,885,000 [col]119.69[row]Final Destination 3[col]869[col]$7,120,000 [col]122.05[row]The Grudge[col]1,825[col]$14,557,965 [col]125.36[row]Hide and Seek[col]1,001[col]$7,832,309 [col]127.80[row]Godsend [col]306[col]$2,394,000 [col]127.82[row]The Amityville Horror[col]1,176[col]$9,103,176 [col]129.19[row]Saw[col]893[col]$6,658,304 [col]134.12[row]The Covenant[col]423[col]$3,126,704 [col]135.29[row]The Exorcism of Emily Rose[col]1,534[col]$11,278,643 [col]136.01[row]Constantine[col]1,539[col]$10,882,297 [col]141.42[row]Blade: Trinity (Wednesday)[col]798[col]$5,521,319 [col]144.53[row]Darkness (Saturday)[col]482[col]$3,298,000 [col]146.15[row]Secret Window[col]973[col]$6,611,433 [col]147.17[row]Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid[col]652[col]$4,384,824 [col]148.69[row]White Noise[col]1,400[col]$8,919,645 [col]156.96[row]Stay Alive[col]658[col]$4,172,149 [col]157.71[row]House of Wax[col]769[col]$4,852,597 [col]158.47[row]Alien Vs Predator[col]2,750[col]$16,442,987 [col]167.24[row]Underworld: Evolution[col]1,738[col]$10,248,416 [col]169.59[row]Lady in the Water[col]1,188[col]$6,851,808 [col]173.43[row]Blade: Trinity (Friday)[col]925[col]$5,309,000 [col]174.23[row]An American Haunting[col]362[col]$1,987,000 [col]182.18[row]Dark Water[col]736[col]$3,873,273 [col]190.02[row]Cry Wolf[col]313[col]$1,569,000 [col]199.49[row]The Wicker Man[col]600[col]$2,843,366 [col]211.02[row]Boogeyman[col]1,752[col]$8,059,750 [col]217.38[row]The Ring Two[col]3,329[col]$14,805,208 [col]224.85[row]Land of the Dead[col]993[col]$4,261,855 [col]233.00[row]The Devil's Rejects[col]720[col]$2,981,362 [col]241.50[row]Snakes on a Plane[col]1,628[col]$6,361,000 [col]255.93[row]Hostel[col]1,957[col]$7,620,052 [col]256.82[row]When a Stranger Calls[col]2,358[col]$9,011,231 [col]261.67[row]Scary Movie 4[col]5,736[col]$19,017,001 [col]301.62[row]See No Evil[col]520[col]$1,681,241 [col]309.30[row]Slither[col]446[col]$1,361,495 [col]327.58[row]Resident Evil: Apocalypse[col]3,371[col]$9,231,008 [col]365.18[row]High Tension[col]259[col]$689,091 [col]375.86[row]Seed of Chucky[col]1,221[col]$2,963,000 [col]412.08[row]Cursed[col]1,626[col]$3,679,000 [col]441.97[row]Alone in the Dark[col]466[col]$916,304 [col]508.56[/table]

Just a note that there might be some films in certain genre threads that aren't really THAT much of that genre, but I just tried to interpret it as best as I could. Also, some films will fall into different charts (like The Covenant in action and horror).

That's outstanding, Zing - great work! I think we will all find this incredibly helpful. Of course there will be plenty of films that could qualify for two or more charts, but this separation will be very useful as our list continues to grow.

Last Kiss has already 20 (A-), Black Dahlia 6 ratings (B+). The others are not available right now. When exactly do we start tracking?

I think we can count both for now. 6 won't matter for Black Dahlia, while 20 could represent a good portion of what Last Kiss will have at the end, but we'll just keep it mind then.

I'd still go with a ratio of 130 for Black Dahlia.

I think Black Dahlia will have 100-110. I think Hollywoodland would have been lower if not for the article and the related link to the movie's page on yahoo front page.

Gridiron Gang - 80 (backloaded too)
Everyone's Hero - 110
The Last Kiss - 135

I think we'll see Black Dahlia on the Yahoo.com front page once it hits around 6pm EST...will definitely skew the ratio a la Wicker Man.

I'm revising my ratios to:

Gridiron Gang: 100-120
The Black Dahlia: 120-140
The Last Kiss: 125-145
Everyone's Hero: 70, but will increase to 100 with a poor grade.

High ratios have become so rare lately that these feel like better estimates. I was hesitant to go so low on Gridiron, but it has a high TC and virtually no online presence. And, in all fairness, I thought Invincible would be a lot higher, too.
