Ararat is a 2002 film directed, written, and co-produced by Atom Egoyan based loosely on the Siege of Van during the Armenian Genocide, an event that is disputed by the government of Turkey. In addition to exploring the human impact of that specific historical event, the film also examines the nature of truth and its representation through art. Ararat stars Charles Aznavour, Christopher Plummer, and David Alpay.

A well-told story with many narrative layers and some interesting ideas, but the main character is pretty annoying and Egoyan made it too personal to ring true. The movie within a movie just felt like a gimmick in order to tell the story, and it was sometimes difficult to tell what was a historical flashback and what was in the movie-in-a-movie. Still, though, some good acting and an interesting story make it worthwhile.
