It's not surprising.. WB finally woke up and threw in the towel and realized it's over.. Fuc*er didn't even break 200 Million DOMESTICALLY which means YES, it was a BOMB for as much $$$$ as Singer spent on this.. It's true and that's that.. Also in other non-related news, That chick from American Idol, Katherine Macphee is playing WONDER WOMAN which is also WB owned and will end up bombing to cause WB Fuc*s up DC Superhero movie's and is the death of DC.. BATMAN is there only saving grace at this point..

Saw Wicker Man this morning in a theatre with about 9 other people (it was 10:15 in the morning so I was surprised to see that many)... movie was BORRRRRRRRRRING. I've never been so bored in my life. The movie looked nice and it was an interesting twist on the original, but I think I've had my fill of Nicolas Cage for the year (he's on screen for the entire 100 minutes basically talking to various women on the island or investigating)... thoroughly pointless.

Trailers, nothing new: Black Dahlia, The Fountain, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Departed, The Return

I've heard the same from my theater manager buddy. It's funny how Cage's films are either solid, or pretty much dull and boring. He just can't consistently pick good projects, I guess. Wicker Man should die off pretty quickly.

any wild guesses on a friday number for the openers (crossover, crank, wicker man)???????

At my theater we were helped tremendously by the rain. Crank was the winner with around $1250, it beat out Wicker Man and Invincible which both had around $1150. Looks to be a very tight race this weekend but I would guess based on my theater Invincible will once again be the top movie.

Not sure how my theater's doing (I can't go tonight, argh), but I'm presuming that because of the hurricane, not too much business.

Anyway, things were better than usual at my theater. This Hindi superhero movie (I can't for the life of me ever remember the spelling of it) was huge. We sold out our largest theater. Illusionist did about 100 per night showing, which I find to be pretty awesome. Sunshine and Invincible tied for about 70 per show. Everything else was business as usual. Funnily enough, while shuffling things around for the Hindi film, Beerfest viewers got to enjoy it on our largest screen with the best sound technology. I sort of found it ironic and sad at the same time.

The openers are the most important part Zennier. What's business as usual?

Not very much. I had nothing to say about them because they did pretty much nothing. We have quite a bit of alternative stuff anyway... film festivals, british and hindi comedy, kubrick in imax...

But since you so kindly asked:
Illusionist average just shy of 100 per show;
Crank around 40 per show;
Wicker Man around 25 per show...

The rest was mixed. Beerfest, for whatever reason, managed to do better business than Wicker Man and nearly as well as Crank. World Trade Center also had a solid hold, with nearly 20 per show... off the top of my head, Accepted had less than 10 for the day, Step Up less than two dozen, Rocky Horror about 30, Superman in IMAX around 100, no clue on Deep Sea 3D... Talladega Nights two dozen, and SOAP was cancelled.

I don't really bother writing down the numbers to bring in here... we do such strange, strange business. Most of our profit is from alternative stuff... our festivals and such. The rest is what keeps us afloat. I report the grosses from time to time, and at the very least check them before going, so I do have a decent grasp of business.

Yeah, it wasn't really that bad of a "hurricane," but because of how much it was talked about on the news that it would be bad (which they always say), most people usually stay in. Pretty much happens everytime there's a hurricane, even if it's just really rainy and windy and nothing too serious.

Yea, dissipated tropical depressions are very serious stuff. Occasionally, there might be gusts up to 15 mph. I do see what you are saying, though. For Northern areas, stuff like this can actually be serious. Floridians are much more used/prepared to it. Doesn't really phase things, not storms like Ernesto. I went to school... went to work... so did everyone else. Yknow? Maybe not so much up there. People can be cautious when they haven't gotten comfortable with being slammed monthly by tropical systems.

Ernesto came through here Tuesday night, it was NOTHING....we've had afternoon thunderstorms that were worse. A ton of places wound up re-opening at normal times the next day, though it was a bit windy and still raining. I didn't see a movie that day (mainly because I've seen everything playing except for Material Girls, How to Eat Fried Worms, Zoom, and The Ant Bully ), but I drove by the theater and it was actually busy for a Wednesday afternoon (a lot of folks probably didn't have anything else to do).

Yup. When Ernesto was actually a named storm (I'm pointing this out to sort of mock the silly people up the coast, hehe), it was pretty much the most uneventful thing ever. We really do get summer storms that are much, much more intense.

But enough about weather. There is an undeniable correlation between perceived "bad weather" and movie patron turnout....

You know, that sounds reeeeeeally bad for Crossover if it couldn't even rank higher than Talladega Nights at your theater, Animosity. I could see it coming in under $4m 4-Day. Eek.

Saw 4 films:

Wicker Man - 50% full in 450 seater.

Trailers - The usual. Nothing new, no reactions to speak of.

Film - Better than expected for something not screened for critics but kind of falls apart at the end with its bizareness, I guess you could call it.

Grade: B-


Lassie - 40% in 150-seater. Didn't catch trailers.

Film - Very bland and otherwise unremarkable. I don't see what critics like about this run-of-the-mill film.

Grade: C+


Crank - 90% full in 300-seater.

Trailers - Employee of the Month, The Protector, Fearless, The Covenant

Film - Decent actioner but for a scant 83 minutes, it isn't as fast-paced as it should be and the flashy directorial style gets rather overused at times. Still, fun with a good sense of humor and rather exaggerated. A sex scene in the middle of Chinatown? You've gotta be kidding me.

Grade: B-


The Illusionist - 10 people in 300-seater (9:55 showing).

Trailers: Haven, Catch a Fire, Hollywoodland, Black Dahlia

Film - Mostly fantastic mix of mystery and romance with solid performances from all involved. Even Biel gives a mostly convincing performance and Rufus Sewell is a stand-out as the villain of the picture.

Grade: A-

Just wanted to mention that the parking lot at my theater tonight was shockingly empty. It had not been that easy to park since the Spring, for sure.
