Post The 2005 Movie Awards
Some of you may know what they are, some may not. It was our Oscars every year at BOM. I haven't seen this discussed , so I didn't know if you guys were doing one, so if you want to, lets get the show on the road.

The way it's done, is we all decide on what awards we would like to give, and then get nominations from the members who vote. Once we have the nominations, we vote for the award.

The show itself is handled like the Oscars, with a host, which I'll volunteer to be, and presenters who write up speeches for the award they are selected to present. When show time arrives, everybody has to be prepared, and speeches would have to be done early incase of somebody not being able to make it. This was the year many of us were looking forward to, because it's been LOTR dominating for two years, and we'll finally have some suprises.

Here are some categories for your consideration.

Best Picture
Best Director
Best Actor
Best Actress
Best Supporting Actor
Best Supporting Actress
Best Cinematography
Best Sound Editing
Best Special FX
Best Score
Lifetime Achievement Award
Best Animated

Feel free to suggest the categories that I haven't listed. When we get all of our categories, the sign ups for the presentations can begin.

bABA was going to announce it on Thursday, I believe, and he is going to setup the thread. Since this topic has been brought up, I guess I'll announce that he asked me to run this year's awards, and I'm grateful and happy to accept the responsibility. I'll certainly need all the helps I can from hosting to counting votes, as well as any new categories people like to have. It should be fun. :)

maybe I'm alone but I think it shouldn't be so similiar to the oscars. Perhaps add a category that a summer comedy could win. Like throw in a category from the MTV awards, just kinda fun.

Oscar definitely lacks some categories. bABA and I have discussed genre ones such as Best Comedy, Best Horror, Best Sequal, etc. It's also time to have a Best Ensemble category. But I also don't want to add so many "fun" categories that it becomes People's Choice or MTV awards. Anyway, I'll wait for his official thread before going any further myself, but any suggestions are welcome.

I gotta agree, let's get some different fun categories in. Best Kiss, Best Action Scene, Best Fight, Best Ensemble Acting, Best Newcomer, Funniest Movie (I was dying from laughter at Anchorman but would never say it's worthy of any normal award), Best Acting Pair, and maybe a few "Worst" categories are all off the top of my head, I bet there's a ton of other great ones too. :)

I'll refrain from categories that target particular scenes (kiss, action, etc) because there are so many different choices that you end up with many with 1 or 2 votes and a couple with a few more votes. I believe the categories should be always movie-based(Picture, Ensemble, tech, etc.) or person-based(acting, screenplay, etc.), but not scene-based, to prevent the number of possible choices from being too big. Right now I advocate adding more genres such as previousely mentioned Best Comedy, Best Horror, ... I also don't want to have "Worst" categories at the same time, because when you do the tally, it will be weird to announce "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is leading with 10 nominations, then followed by Alexander with 7, but all 7 are from worst categories."

Hmm... I can definitely understand a lot of your reasoning. My only thing is that maybe then we should have a seperate mini awards for the Worst films of the year, a KJ Razzies of sorts. Nothing too big, just kind of a side thing for fun. I'd be happy to host it if you needed anyone. :)

I am of the mindset that we should hold after the oscars (in March), to allow time for everyone to see limited release films.

There are several smaller films that I would like to see before voting.

Great idea. Because I live in Austria I won't be able to see many great movies before about March/April.

Mav

I asked Xia. but it seems like you got here first.

Is it possible for the 2 of you to co-host?

With that:

Oscar categories:

List of winners at the 76th annual Academy Awards, presented Sunday night at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles:

Best Picture:
Actor:
Actress:
Supporting Actor:
Supporting Actress:
Director:
Foreign Film:
Adapted Screenplay:
Original Screenplay:
Animated Feature:
Art Direction:
Cinematography:
Sound Mixing:
Sound Editing:
Original Score:
Original Song:
Costume:
Documentary Feature:
Documentary (short subject):
Film Editing:
Makeup:
Animated Short Film:
Live Action Short Film:
Visual Effects:

My suggestion:
Get rid of the following,

adapted and original screenplay. Now before you all go crazy on me, i suggest we have best screenplay only. a lot of time, people do not know what is adapted and what is not.

Sound Mixing
Sound Editing <- A maybe
Documentary (Short Subject)
Make Up
Animated Short Film

I think the following should definetely be considered as additions
Best ensemble
Best comedy
Best popcorn
Best Villain
Best Romance

Others I can suggest
Best action sequence
Best breakthrough (can't think of any)
Best unintentionally funny movie

We don't need Live Action Short either. Should have enough nominees for Best Breakthrough Performance.

Anything that works with Mav works for me. I just like to help in any way I can. :)

I really thik we shoudl set a precendent of having this in march at the earliest.

One year we had these in like January, when i was first at BOM and TTT won everything, why because eeryone had seen that and not much else. Granted their is not LOTR movie this year, but still alot of the realy great films get a very limited or sort release at the end of the year in NY and LA (and other major cities) and don;t go wide until January or even February. I wasn't able to see my favorite film of 2002 till March 2003.

I think you guys should inform the mods next time ... there are always a million things being planned for the site and the forum at all times .. if we know you guys are doing it, then it can all just get incorporated in or hell, throws the burden of our shoulders.

Sommie: Foreign is already there. Another i could suggest is best indie

March shouldn't be a big problem cept I really wish for people to vote only on movies they've seen. Its terrible when people look at all the awards and start making decisions on those without actually watching the movie. no way in hell i'm letting a movie like sideways win or aviator if only 3 people saw them but 20 people voted cause it got all the awards in the real show.

Exactly, I jsut want to wiat to march to give everyone time to see as many 2004 release as possible. I've seen a few award winning pictures in 2004, but not that many. Alot of the stuff I want o see right now I can't do to finals and such, so with January. February adn march to catch up I feel like i cannot make an informed decision. Also waiting allows users that live outside the US like Riggs time to get the American releases.

Sounds cool.

I think we can spend most of jan working out the award category and hosts ...

or if we plan on waiting till march .. hmm ... a tonyM and arsiB award show?

lets see.

 Do you mean that this makes up for the time that plans were made for the poster awards, and bABA swooped in and decided to do it instead without checking with anybody first?

It doesn't matter to me, as long as we have the awards. My heart isn't set on hosting or organizing things, but it's the end of December, and there had been no talk about getting anything going. I'll help out if needed, but if somebody else really wants to do the rest, it's cool, my heart won't be broke over it.

Zingaling was the first who asked me if he can help me organizing. Iactually, had everything set up already to post it today. If you don't believe me, then ask matatonio who I told days ago, that I am doing it on Wednesday :?

Also, I agree about doing them later.

Out of all praised movies this year only movies like Kill Bill Vol. 2, Collateral and The Incredibles were released here. Movies like Sideways, The Aviator, Closer, Million Dollar Baby are all supposed to come out January/February.

@Mav

bABA's poster awards weren't just out of nowhere. I talked back to him because we planned at the same time and he was generous enough to find a compromise. Therefore, he did check with people. :)

@Arsi

I say, go for the Tony M./Arsi awards first. but don't use the old categories all over, but invent new ones too ;)
