That's It. I'm calling an 18 million Dollar OD For SOAP
This movie has waaaay more going for it than any other horror/thriller movie opening in August in the past few years, namely Freddy Vs. Jason, Alien Vs. Predator, or Red Eye, among many others. The internet fanbase is HUGE, and 2006 has been home to same very surprising opening days in regards to much hyped films, followed by severe drops (i.e. Omen and X-Men)...The build-up for this film is just too big, with advertising everywhere and awareness through the roof. I think a lot of the older crowd, faced with not many new crowd pleasers in the last few weeks, and without that a mindless action movie for quite some time this summer will flock to Snakes, along with its many, many devoted die-hard fans. Obviously this film will sputter out quite rapidly, but opening day should be massive. The only thing not going for it is its R-rating, although this is also part of its appeal, so things even out. The only aspect I'm worrying about is the fact that there will be a LOT of teenagers buying tickets to other movies and sneaking into this. Still, look for a monster opening day! I guarentee it.
It's a weird number (18), but does anyone want to join this as a "club" before tomorrow when numbers come out???

You probably missed the midnight reports which pretty much has a direct correlation to its OD especially for its genre

No.
I think we'll see a $10-12m opening day. The midnight shows did not do that well, and while I don't think that can translate into a lower-than-expected opening weekend (SOAP beat AVP's midnight showing, for example), I don't think it can do $18m.

I have a sock waiting. I definately think it will do below 10 million. You cannot deny the midnight reports, I mean this is a fanbase driven movie judging by the antics going on in the show. I mean even the preludes for MI3 midnight shows were a sign that the movie was doomed despite people were making optimistic views on how even that wasnt a midnight movie, Im just using it in respect to its genre

If SOAP makes even $15M today, I will send you a gift certificate for a free dinner at Ruth Chris's steakhouse. You'd better keep that TV dinner nearby, though.

Oh and midnight reports have been counted according to notfabio from the 450 midnight showings
http://talk.hsx.com/films/post.htm?0818123748.notfabio
Its at $0.283 million. I only wish Lecter took the Barnyard challenge, I was extremely confident that I offered to eat a sock if it opens to 10 million

How do they already have the numbers from the showings? I thought they wouldn't be released until the weekend was over.

Notfabio's #'s are accurate, not to mention quite sad.

Yeah. They usually only have estimates during the week too. I'm going to the theatre tonight and definitely will check out the crowds for Snakes.

That's a pretty bad number. But I'm not sure how accurate it is. I'll take notfabio's word for it, but this would mean that the average number of people per showing was, like, 90 people.

Samuel Jackson:
"Awww, shit man, I thought this was Pulp Fiction 2. My ass got scammed! C'mon geeks, bail me out and see my movie. I'll curse a whole bunch and may even punch an old lady!"

You know I really didn't expect that big of a 10:00 Midnight opening simply because it's pretty much the end of Summer. If this was released in July or something it would of had a bigger 10:00 Midnight Screenings opening. Add in the fact that a lot of people I know are already in School.

Didn't Alien vs. Predator and Freddy vs. Jason also not do great from late-night showings? They still did great over the entire weekend.

Oh I see now. The Plan B arguments are now starting to kick in that despite all the mediocre midnight showings, it will still have a huge OW.

Why don't you join BKB in the killjoy club who are unable to enjoy B-movies?

I seperate my predictions from my enjoyments of movies and just because I dont think it will do as well as expected doesnt mean I wont enjoy it. The defensive attitude is what Lesterg earlier refers to as fanboism where any criticism over its BO means its an attack on the movie.

We need to sticky a "Hall of Shame" thread - a permanent place to laugh at guarantees like these. We can keep a running list of items/tasks that the original posters had to do, eat, create, destroy, etc. It would make for some great entertainment.

But it is an attack on the movie. Especially if you do what BKB does and badmouth the movie even before seeing it.
