 Spain fined for racist chanting
Fifa has fined the Spanish Football Federation £44,750 after several England players were racially abused during last month's friendly in Madrid.
~~~
Fifa's disciplinary panel also took into account the racist abuse which surfaced the previous night at the Under-21 game between the two nations.
Spain were also warned that any repeat would result in heavier punishment.
In a statement, Fifa stated that Spain could face the prospect of playing behind closed doors or possible expulsion from one or several of their competitions.
~~~
"We will continue to adopt a zero tolerance approach to any racist behaviour in English football and whenever any of our teams play abroad.
"Racism is the scourge of the game and it is the responsibility of all who care about football to do everything within their power to eradicate it."
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/footbal ... 110135.stm
This is not new in European soccer, at all. Blatant examples of racism are everywhere. A few years ago, many of the spectators during a game in Poland threw bananas at one of the African players from the other team.
I'm somewhat rooting for African countries to play the final game at the World Cup in 2006 That'll shut those racist pigs up (well, not really, but it's a major kick in the ass).

£44,750????? Pathetic. I preffered the other punishment, which was parade the racists around the pitch before the match, then banning them for 5 years.

I don't think that'd be racist. More anti-American.
In general, any grounds for insult are used by idiotic soccer fans obsessed with the game. The game sometimes brings out the best in people, and all too often the worst.
Racism is one of the easiest ways to insult and dehumanize.
Incidentally, Real Madrid's prez (or officer or whatever) stepped down a few years ago because she could not handle the extreme sexism she encountered. Her son told the media that his mother had grown sick of being blamed as a woman for all the club's shortcomings.
As well, a female bullfighter was forced to retire because she could not stand the incredible amount of insults hurled at her for being a female.
21st century Spain, hehe.

Several black England players were subjected to monkey noises and other abusive chants from the crowd during their 1-0 defeat at the Bernabeu stadium on November 17.

And I just found this:
Among recent incidents across the continent:
• In France on Nov. 13, two black players for the Bastia team, Pascal Chimbonda of Guadalupe and Franck Matingou of Congo, along with their family members, were abused and roughed up in the parking lot after a game, following their team's 3-0 loss to rival Saint-Etienne. The incident prompted French players, coaches and referees the following week to don "No to Racism" T-shirts for their next game.
• In England, about a week later, Birmingham player Dwight Yorke, who is black, confronted two men in the stands who harassed him during his pregame warm-up drills by making monkey noises and imitating a monkey's scratching. One of the men, who said he was drunk at the time, was fined the equivalent of about $1,900 for the incident and banned from soccer stadiums in England and Wales for five years.
• In the Netherlands last month, a referee, Rene Temmink, for the first time invoked a new rule and stopped a game in The Hague. The crowd had become hostile, chanting, "Temmink, go to the gas chamber!" and calling the referee "the whore of Hamas," referring to the Palestinian Islamic militant group. When the Amsterdam team Ajax plays, fans of rival teams typically make a loud hissing noise, to simulate Nazi gas chambers -- a reference to the Ajax team's supposedly Jewish origins.
• In Spain on Nov. 17, during a friendly match between Spain and England, two black players for the English team were subjected to monkey noises and racist slogans chanted by thousands of fans in the 55,000-seat stadium. England protested, and British Prime Minister Tony Blair said he was "very disappointed." Spanish officials waited a full day before condemning the incident and Spanish newspapers played it down, saying the British press had exaggerated it.
• Also in Spain, on Nov. 23, a Champions League match between Real Madrid and visiting Bayer Leverkusen was disrupted by fans at Madrid's Bernabeu stadium who gave Nazi salutes and made monkey noises whenever Leverkusen's black player, Roque Junior of Brazil, had the ball. On Friday, Europe's football governing body, UEFA, fined Real Madrid the equivalent of about $13,000 as a result.
• In Italy, Lazio -- already fined for racist incidents -- was sanctioned by the UEFA on Friday after Pierre Boya, a Cameroonian player for Partizan Belgrade, was subjected to a torrent of monkey noises and grunts from Lazio fans in the stands whenever he had the ball. Belgrade's other black players also came in for abuse from Lazio fans making monkey noises during the Nov. 25 match in Rome. Lazio was ordered by the UEFA to play its next European home match in an empty arena. Partizan Belgrade was fined the equivalent of about $6,900 for misbehavior by its fans.

WTF?
What kind of fines are these?? Is this a friggin joke?
Each single game earns the teams more money than that. Heck, one club could pay all those fines just based on tv rights from one game!

It's probably been around for a long time, but it's gotten more serious and widespread in the last few years.
There appears to be a general increase in hostility towards non-Europeans and various ethnic groups. The examples given above pretty much include insults directed towards Blacks, Jews, Palestinians, and I mentioned women as well, and Krem brought up the Anti-Americanism during the Tour de Lance.
The more frequently it occurs, the less respect Europe will have in the football world.
Anyways, I'm expecting that Brazil as well as two African teams will be in the final 4 at the World Cup. Africa has amazing players, they'll get very far.

Box, oh box, i hope that was a joke. Brazil and 2 other African teams? I very much doubt it. Most of the black players in top leagues are not African, or atleast do not play for their African nation. It is going to be a long time untill that happens i guess.

You don't think so?
Well, I didn't say I'm not overly optimistic ( :mrgreen: )
But I dunno. We saw a number of suprises in 2002, no? I mean, who knew France would be embarassed like that and offer us all so much material for jokes?

Surprises? Senegal was the only surprise, I think we should be talking about Greece in Euro 2004. Pure Luck, it won't happen again.

I disagree. Europe won't have any less respect in football, because Europe pretty much is the centre of the football world. Europe is where all the money is, Europe is where all the stars and best players are, Europe is where the FIFA headquarters are, Europe is where all the best teams are, etc.
Barring a complete freak show like the World Cup '02, where controversial refereeing reigned supreme, there's no way there'll be an African team in the semi-finals. No African team has ever got that far and I don't think it'll happen this time either.
By the way, why isn't this in the Sports section?

A lot of non emericans call american people racist and other names but where i encountered the most racism was in europe.
A few years ago my family went to spain so we could visit my grandparents from my mothers side and a few cousins from that side started talking shit about us and treating us like shit,one of them said that i was disgusting because me and my father are puertoricans and that spaniards shouldnt mix there blood with dark colored people.
I recieved the same kind of treatment in Germany. :evil:

I would venture to say North Korea and the USA were rather large suprises as well.
As for an African nation gettign in ... not anytime soon.
I think the USA has a better chance of developing and using its talent to reach the finals before an African nation can.
Brazil is another story, and France will be back, they do afterall have arguably the best midfielder in the game.

Nah, the World Cup '02 was probably the weirdest tournament ever. The refereeing was probably the worst in the history of the tournament. The cheating team known as South Korea got to the semi-finals completely undeserved! They started by beating Italy in the round of 16 after having trailed the entire game and Italy having a completely legit goal ruled out. Then they defeated Spain in the quarters in a penalty shoot out. This was after Spain had TWO legit goals disallowed, TWO penalties turned down and having hit the post thrice!
When South Korea faced Germany in the semi-finals I think pretty much everyone on this planet must have been rooting for Germany.

To get this back on topic, which isn't soccer itself but racism in Europe (ok twas my fault for bringing up WC 2002), what surprises me the most is that Europe at one and the same time is moving towards ultra-liberalism, yet holding steadfast to a remarkable variety of racist and prejudiced attitude.
Mosques being attacked in the Netherlands? Dutch fans imitating gas chamber sounds? Just sick.
On Spain, they're about to pass gay marriage laws (well, most likely), yet this stuff still persists in their culture.

I believe this happened in response to the cold blooded killing of Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh by an arab gang, after he had criticised the muslim community for it's unethical treatment of women.
