Snakes on a Plane 26.8 million (the hype/"buzz" compared to the people actually want to see it is probably low)
Accepted 13 million (on the other hand, this has had a good campaign including a sold MySpace one...and it's a comedy)
Talladega 12 million
Step Up 11 Million
World Trade Center 10.5 million
Material Girls 2.5 million (hopefully the last nail in the Duff coffin)

Snakes on a Plane - 34 million - This is incredibly difficult to predict. Does anyone really know how this film will do or even what range it's likely to fall in?

Accepted - 8 million

Material Girls - 4 million - Hilary Duff is no longer a draw and this hasn't had enough marketing.

I'm getting a huge campy feel of Snakes, that I was getting from Scary Movie 1. The R rating, can't stop the camp factor.

The camp factor seems to be more about people wanting to make fun of the movie rather than actually see it. There just hasn't been enough real footage or anything to make people want to shell out good money to go see it.

But this isn't Basic Instinct 2 camp factor (ie vomit inducing), this is Sam Jackson yelling at snakes baby! People will pay to see this, and I don't see how with an even more barren marketplace (ex. films like Miami Vice, Lady In The Water, and other big tentpoles disappointing), that competition will be too much of a big factor. People have wanted to see this film for a while, and while it has been made fun of, many people realize what a fun movie experience this would be. Ex. The Omen, everyone knew it was going to suck, but the fun factor of seeing a film on June 6th, 2006, was what pushed it to a $12 m + opening day. People dont care on this type of film if its crap, if crap is what they want!

Snakes on a Plane seems almost a sure bet to accrue the largest opening weekend of any film in which Samuel L. Jackson headlined. I don't count SWAT because he had Colin Farrell and LL Cool J with him. All it needs to do is beat the $24,182,960 that Coach Carter made its opening weekend.

Material Girls - 2.8 mil
Little Miss Sunshine - 4.6 mil

I am going to laugh so hard at the reactions for Snakes, I swear. Where's the hype, the buzz, the marketing? The internet is laughing, but think about the average joe, I can imagine all the "Snakes on a Plane...wtf?"s. How is an R rated creature comedy, that aims at one very narrow demographic(young males), going to open to 30 mil+? The internet will have a ball with this, but otherwise, nothing.

It will open to $20m. Guaranteed. $30m is a strong possibility with the big theater count and $9,000 PTA, which isn't too hard for an internet hyped film like this, but c'mon... $15m? Yeah right.

I hope you're right. It isn't just the Internet that knows about this. Even so, everyone and I mean everyone who would be interested in seeing this uses the Internet on a regular basis (and that's a lot of people as most have the Internet in their homes).

It has made news stories on CNN, Fox News, CBS, NBC, etc. so awareness has to be high. Very rarely do tracking firms overestimate films (they usually underestimate as is the case with Step Up). Plus, how could someone want this to fail? Finally a movie that isn't pretentious crap and tells it like it is. Predicting it to fail isn't any fun and reeks of pessimism. Optimism should be the rule of the day. Even Libs is predicting it to do well and she's usually pretty good with her predictions and picking out hits and flops.

We have a sock-eating riding on its opening day

And another thing. The film likely would have opened to 15 million had it been called Flight 121 and been PG-13 sans hype. Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid almost did and it was an unwanted sequel with a no-name cast. Add the hype and it has to do markedly better.

ah screw it

SOAP - $40M
Accepted - $18M
Material Girls - $4M
LMS- $5M

I upped my Snakes prediction cause it's still getting hyped like a blockbuster. I think it can beat Alien vs Predator.

40 million would be incredible and I hope it happens so badly. If it does, would New Line greenlight a sequel right away?

SOAP detractors always revert to the claim "It's an internet thing." Or "It's another example of fanbase giving biased predictions ala Serenity."

Well, A. The Blair Witch Project was also an "Internet thing" and look at how that did.

B. It's not sci-fi (a notoriously difficult genre to sell unless you have a big star) and it's not based on a TV show that was so "popular" it quickly got canned.

SOAP is such a phenomenon of sorts that it's inspired group gatherings across the nation.
