 Beverly Hills Cop III Beverly Hills Cop III Quote: Beverly Hills Cop III is a 1994 action-comedy film starring Eddie Murphy and directed by John Landis, who had previously worked with Murphy on Trading Places and Coming to America. It is the third film in the Beverly Hills Cop series.
Murphy returns as Detroit cop Axel Foley, who once again returns to Beverly Hills, California to stop a gang of counterfeiters, responsible for the death of his boss. Foley teams up with his friend, Beverly Hills detective Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold), and his investigation leads him to an amusement park known as Wonderworld. The film features a number of cameo appearances by well-known film personalities including Robert B. Sherman, Arthur Hiller, John Singleton, Joe Dante, special effects legend Ray Harryhausen, and George Lucas as a ride patron.
Beverly Hills Cop III was released on May 25, 1994 and grossed US$44 million in the United States, and over $75 million in the foreign box office. The film was considered by critics and admittedly by Murphy himself as the most disappointing film in the series.

The problem with Beverly Hills Cop III is the director John Landis. What Martin Brest was able to do perfectly in the first one, and what Tony Scott was just able to pull off in the second one, was combine the action and comedy together perfectly. The first was mostly a comedy with some action thrown in, while the second was an action film with some comedy thrown in.
The problem though with Landis' version of doing the same thing is that he makes the film campy. He establishes this in the opening scene where all of the mechanics stop what they are doing and begin dancing and singing to Motown. Just because the beginning takes place in Detroit doesn't mean characters have to start singing Motown. He also establishes this throughout with his usual supply of cameos by famous directors. For a casual moviegoer it's not noticeable, but for anyone who enjoys movies it's distracting. Why do we need to see George Lucas before the beginning of an action sequence?
Also, even though Harold Faltermeyer's great Axel Foley theme is still in the film, it's been "polished up" in a horrible way. The only thing I can think of is that they changed the theme around to make it more adaptable to the 90s, but it sounds awful.
And it's just not the same this time around with only Axel and Rosewood. They really missed John Ashton in this one as Taggart. Hector Elinzondo just doesn't cut it as his replacement. In fact, the only thing that makes this movie watchable is the familiar duo of Axel and Rosewood and that's thanks to Eddie Murphy and Judge Reinhold. However, they couldn't pull off the miracle of saving the film.
Many people have wanted a fourth film and I absolutely wouldn't mind seeing another one. It hopefully cannot get much worse than what happened here.

I agree, its not bad, but compared to the others its a downfall. The Director really dropped the ball. Axel is still pretty good, though his 80s hair is sorely missed. His Laugh is even gone in this one. It just feels like a DTV version of one of the others. Its a movie about a Disney Knockoff. Theres some good moments, but overall is just an average sequel that didnt do justice to the other films.

Terrible and a huge disappointment after the brilliance of the first two.
