It seems the promotion involving a personalized cell phone message from Sam Jackson was more popular than anticipated:

Sweetness. The word is getting out.

So I'm sitting there watching the Minnesota Twins game, listening to the announcers Dick Bremer and Bert Blyleven (Former Twins pitcher who should be a comedian he's so funny) talk about various things.

Then the camera zooms in on a praying mantis going about near the dugout and Dick says, "That thing looks gross. It's like that movie coming out, Snakes on a Plane I think it's called. I don't like snakes and I don't particularly like flying so why would I see that movie?" Bert replies, "That's why you would. It's spooky. I want to see it." Then they actually play the Twilight Zone theme song as they go to break.

This tells me the word is getting out. I mean, these guys are in their 40's and even they know about the movie. They even gave it free promotion of sorts just by mentioning it. Is that cool or what?

I'm already tired of this movie and it doesn't come out for two weeks. Lovely.

I just feel like everyone is going to be disappointed when it comes out because it will be really...anticlimatic? after all the endless hype.

Coming from one of the people who think it'll do well, I'll say that this means nothing, really. I think it's a given that people involved in the media know about SOAP, but the question is, how high is the awareness and interest in the general public?

They're baseball announcers constantly on the road with little time to watch TV so to me it would seem to mean something that they know about it. They're not really in show business.

I beg to differ. At least when it comes to me personally, the more hyped I am for a movie the better. The last time I recall being this hyped for a movie was Terminator 3 in 2004 (Most movies just sort of sneak up on me, such as Hard Candy which I had heard a little about but didn't expect the darn near masterpiece it was). If this is anything like T3, I will love it partly because I've already decided that I want to like it. As an added bonus, no one that sees it should be expecting a masterpiece. They just want a fun B-movie. It's hard to disappoint with such expectations as David R. Ellis has already made two very fun B-movies and a movie with snakes attacking people on a plane would seem pretty difficult to make wholly uninteresting or entertaining.

I was having a conversation with a friend about the marketing of SOAP. He was of the opinion that New Line should be more tongue-in-cheek with their marketing, playing up the comedy aspect of the whole enterprise, unintentional or otherwise. I don't agree.

I believe that it's in the best interests of New Line to play it straight with the marketing. They already have those who know of and get into the online phenomenon, the people that know that it is to be laughed at in some manner. What they need in addition to such people are those out of the loop with the whole internet hoopla, those who will decide whether or not to see the movie based on the marketing. As evidenced by the failure of Slither and Eight Legged Freaks, comedy horror films don't sell at all, no matter how good the reviews are. Therefore, New Line must play it as a straight thriller in the trailers and TV spots in an attempt to garner those who see movies like Anacondas, Final Destination, and other similar films. If they had decided to play it off as a comedy, it would be doomed to failure as the film likely needs more than just those in the know to see it in order for it to become a hit.

Well, I found and bought a SOAP T-shirt at Hot Topics, a store I'd never normally shop at (It's a hard rock clothing store). Anyone else going to get a shirt or some other form of memorbillia (Poster, etc.)?

I just saw an ad for Snakes on a Plane that is attempting to actually make the film look scary. Big marketing mistake, in my opinion, since the only way to market this properly is as some sort of "freakshow event" like Rocky Horror or something, if you ask me.

Explain yourself.

They already have those people. They have to try and sell it to the general populace now and thriller mode is their best bet.

I think he's referring to the non-stop SOAP talk in a bunch of threads (even if it's not related to SOAP), constant random links and just being generally over-obsessive like excel did with Superman Returns.
