Quote:
Seabiscuit is a 2003 American biographical film based on the best-selling non-fiction book Seabiscuit: An American Legend by Laura Hillenbrand. The film is loosely based on the life and racing career of Seabiscuit, an undersized and overlooked thoroughbred race horse, whose unexpected successes made him a hugely popular media sensation in the United States near the end of the Great Depression.

A-/B+

An excellent and heartwarming underdog story. It probably didn't deserve a Best Picture nomination, but hey, I liked it a lot. Tobey riding the injured horse near the end always gets to me.

Sensational account of a true story. A perfect adaptation of a perfect book by Laura Hillenbrand. The whole cast is awesome. A+

Great Movie. I read the book, and I feel like the book was little better, but usually movies don't measure up to books. Great cast and just a great story. B+

It's your typical underdog, Depression Era etc.e tc. story. It's well-acted, but corny at times. Overall, I enjoyed it, but is it really a worthy Best Picture nominee? I don't think so. Cinematography was splendid, though. I loved the horserace scenes. Cinderella Man is a better Depression Era movie, though.

Seabiscuit: Pays $2.15 on a $2 Ticket

I found Seabiscuit to be quite inspiring and entertaining. That summer's underdog-genre movie. A couple of things detracted from it being a great movie though. First, was the crummy sound mix (you could barely hear the dialogue, which is very unusual in a big movie like this, and particularily bad for the older audience it will attract - average age at my screening = 70). Second, was the clunky direction - the story meandered at times, the narration came back from nowhere every once in a while - luckily the story was strong enough to allow you to forget the amateurish work of the director. Still, who wouldn't like a movie who's catch phrase is "You don't throw away a whole life, just because it's been banged around a little."

3 out of 5.

Pretty much agree with Lecter. Standard uplifting underdog story. The first 1/3 is slow, but once all the cast are together, the film takes off. Not worthy of a Best Picture nominee. B.

I agree with Lecter and xiayun. It's a pretty typical movie of its kind, but it does have great technicals. I don't think it deserved it's BP nomination, although many of the nominations were deserving.

B+
