 WWW..... The Ant Bully...
What Went Wrong???
1. Animation overload- many families go see a movie as a planned event, weekly or so.. Some effect, but not enough to account for all the low number...
2. Eager critics said it was a commie film.. It's not, more centrist...
3..Cautious parents- firecrackers, magnifying glasses... "no knowledge is safety"
4. Affection for ants...
5. Affection for exterminators.......

No appeal for girls to watch the movie as well. Monster House had a strong female lead, Ant Bully is about bugs and a boy. That's just one of the many reasons...

I think looked like crap is the biggest one, for sure.

1. Animation overload- many families go see a movie as a planned event, weekly or so.. Some effect, but not enough to account for all the low number... I only haven't seen it yet, because they delayed the IMAX 3D release, up till next Friday, a week after the wide release... Quote: 2. Eager critics said it was a commie film.. It's not, more centrist... Errr... ants are a colony-based organism... Quote: 3..Cautious parents- firecrackers, magnifying glasses... "no knowledge is safety" You might be onto something there... Quote: 4. Affection for ants... I love ants! "If all of humanity were to disappear, the remainder of life would spring back and flourish. The mass extinctions now underway would cease, the damaged ecosystems heal and expand outward. However, if all the ants somehow disappeared, the effect would be exactly the opposite, and catastrophic. Species extinction would increase even more than the present rate, and the land ecosystems would shrivel rapidly as the considerable services provided by these insects were pulled away." - Bert Hölldobler - Journey to the AntsQuote: 5. Affection for exterminators.......
Gotta be a pretty small demographic...

It's the 8th cg animated film this year (in just 8 months). That's the main reason, along with the fact that it opening right in the middle of two other animated films. Again, its bad release date choice.

Here is what I think went wrong.
A: Too similar to Bug's Life and Ant's.
B: The exterminator is too similar to Over the Hedge (coincidently, both Sideway's costars supplied the voices).
C: Uninteresting plot.

Several critics praise the high-concept plot.. So story may not be all the problem....
My gut reaction was some disconnect between the human and the ants... They look so warrior..

Poor advertising. The IMAX is doing quite well, though.
As for the movie, it isn't particularly bad. It's decent... has its merits. Let's just say it isn't crap.
