I wouldn't be surprised if this opens to around 15 mil, I don't think anyone outside the internet cares about this movie at all. Not to mention it's a creature horror which have always done bad, it's marketing has been largely crappy, and it panders to one demographic: Young males, with the internet movie followers on the side who make up a tiny %.

If it was before Miami Vice like it was for me that's the wrong audience as mostly older adults would see Vice as they remember the show. Snakes is more for the 16-30 age group.

Think of it this way: How much would the film have done if it had changed its titled as rumored to Pacific Air Flight 121? Not good so anything it gets because of its creative title is a bonus. The film was hardly expensive to make at 30 million and will easily recoup its budget, if not in theatres for sure on DVD.

I don't even want to think about the Yahoo ratio for this movie. It's going to be off the charts

I don't have time to read the entire thread, but I predict:

$20M of internet buzz
$7M of WOM from friends who got dragged by their geek friends
$10M of curiosity WOM
$15M Samuel L Jackson fanbase
$5M of fans who just like to see Samuel L Jackson swear a blue streak
------
$57M
This will be spaced out over about a month. I have no idea about opening weekend.
Obviously, I'm not in the Under $40M club.

They should make a Samuel L Jackson + Billy Bob Thornton buddy pic. The cuss word/second ratio would break records.

As we draw closer, I don't think the internet hype will translate to the BO. I'm lowering my prediction to $22M/$48M.

check out the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly :D it's got Sam on the cover.

Quote:
...All of these ideas amuse Jackson, but he would like to make one thing clear: "Snakes on a Plane doesn't speak
volumes about shit. I just hope people go to this film and have a good time. Laugh, scream, freak each other out."
He also hopes movie critics, who will have to do without advance screenings, will leave Snakes alone.
"Those motherfuckers don't need to watch this. They need to send some 13 year old kid with fucking pimples that goes
to the mall every friday to watch movies. I respect the people who are going to see this film, because they know what they like to see," he says. "They're not afraid to say they like it. I like those films too. I like seeing people getting fucked up in strange and funny situations. There's a lot of us out there!" On Aug. 18, you'll know where they'll be. The question is, Will they like the movie they helped to make?

Elsa Pataky from SOAP is going to be on Leno in a few minutes with a clip. Can't wait.

EDIT:

Instead, they had a snake wrangler preceded by a clip from the film. The albino cobra was the coolest.

22/50, but with good wom possibly 60.

This movie looks so godawful, I wouldn't be surprised if half the audience left after the opening credits, but come opening weekend the curiosity factor will be huge. Aint it cool gave it a good review.

I would really love to see this make like $50M opening weekend, but sadly, I think America will miss the joke again. Poor ole Team America fell victim to the same thing.

I'll put it at like $24M opening

Yeah thanks for bringing Team America up again because it was pretty much the same people who were relentless that Team America would open in the high teens and even in the 20s. I see alot of similarities in both movies that they were both heavily hyped on the net

Big difference between Team America and SOAP: One starred freaking pupputs, possibly the biggest turn off for a movie ever. Snakes should appeal to the same people who see films like Anacondas, Red-Eye, and Cellular.

Doesn't matter. I doubt there are many young people that saw Cellular in the first place. If I remember right, most of the audience for that was over 25 anyway and it's from the same director as SOAP.

Ok now I'm really embarassed. All this time I thought SOAP was a totally new movie I'd never heard of. I though SOAP was a remake of the 70's soap parody soap, which was named, really, SOAP.

SOAP = Snakes on a Plane. Got it.

What the hell? What happened to the old poll Movies.com used to have for each film? It was so much better for tracking anticipation and all. Bleh.
