Im just I guess looking at the list, and all the films that hit 400 million in a single run, Titanic, Shrek, Spiderman, Phantom Menace, and most likely Pirates are all sub par films. If I was to rank the films, they would do ok, but I dont think any of them are exceptional or great films. Does anyone else feel this way, or is just me. I guess I dont really have a point, but just an opinion I felt that, for some reason, not necessarily bad films, but nothign great are the bigest films of our generation. It just strikes me as odd.

Shrek, Phantom, Spiderman, Pirates 6/10

Im not, Im more upset about the other popcorn flicks in the 90s that entered the all time list. Armageddon, Twister and ID4. What were people back then thinking?

The funny part is that there all disaster flicks too. I dont mind ID4 that much, but Armageddon a lot and Twister somewhat.They were big, but Im talking films that hopped into the top 5 of all time. I just dont get it. These are currently the top 5 highest grossing films in a single run (SW and ET not eligible) AnI just think its funny that all of them dont deserve it. I'll give them Titanic, only because its run is so insane, you can hate it all you want, but it hit the mark with people

Titanic is an awesome film. Tragic romances are fairly rare these days. Shrek 2, Spiderman, and Pirates are all great crowd pleasers, and pleasing crowds was always the purpose of movies. Look at the adjusted chart; it is filled with crowd pleasers of their day. Phantom Menace, on the other hand, blew chunks.

Titanic-I think was a very good film that just hit on all cylinders in terms of the movie audience.
TPM, Shrek 2, and POTC 2-Are all sequels to very popular movies. I don't think they are good films, but they benefitted from their predecessors popularity and quality. The Pudd'nhead Wilson effect.
Spiderman-Was a good film. Its success was due to the fact that it was the first big screen adaptation of a supremely popular comic book icon.

None of these films will be remembered like Gone With The Wind, The Ten Commandments, The Godfather, Star Wars, and most movies that were the biggest films of their time.

Look at it from perspective, movies with these large grosses were obviously liked by the majority of moviegoers hence the large gross. This is why films that normally have bad word of mouth "Gigli" make minimal amounts at the box office. Does any of this honestly mean that Gigli was worse than these other films? Mabye, but it cant be proven because there is no set rules defining a good movie from a bad movie. Opinions drive the box office. Opinions are what make people go or not go to a movie. What drives opinion? Trailers,Directors, Actors,Quality of film, premise, sequel(funny but true), etc.....

Its not so much that, just as far as Crowd pleasers go. I can take Titanic, becuase frankly it is a well executed film that was a very big gamble, its actually a good movie.

I just look at these movies, and then go back like ten 15 years, when Movies like Jurassic Park, Raiders, Jaws, Ghostbuster were all in there. I agree that to be a mega blockbuster, you need to be a mega crowd pleaser, I just never find any of those films to be in the same leagues as those ones. I just think as far as top 5 films go, they really trail in comparison.

Spiderman isnt really that big a deal though, since Superman and Batman both did about the same as 400 million adjusted. I think that one was kind of expected.

I wouldn't say they dumbed down. Titanic is the only romantic drama atop the unadjusted list, and has no comparison. Spiderman was a genuinely good movie, one vastly overdue given the source material. Pirates is a classic adventure movie; in my book, it's ahead of all of those movies except Raiders and Empire.

Thats where we'll differ. I find the worst movie on that list, Home Alone to be more entertaining than all of those films except Titanic

Something I always point out whenever I talk about Independence Day. Millions of babies were killed, but they gave the Dog his own close call "He made it!!" scene.

I hate TPM and haven't seen/won't ever see Shrek 2, but pretty much fine with the rest. Titanic is an excellent movie and Spider-Man is one of my five all-time favorites!

I know, but thats the same reason I loved Mars Attacks, god noone got that movie, and it did in fact kill the dog, that was priceless.

While I agree with Gun for the most part, you have to keep one thing in mind, ET, SW, Radiers, JAWS, adjusted, they would all be at about 400 mill, if not more. So its not that audiences' taste has changed, it just costs more now to go to the movies.

It angers me to no end.

At least, I think all of them adjust over 600 million now. SW is over 1.1 billion

Titanic may not seem great to some people now, but in 1997 and 1998, it was a phenomenon, the biggest movie event since E.T. in 1982 (I suppose?). It was THE topic of discussion.

You can talk about Raiders, Jaws, Jurassic Park, etc. being much superior to the mega grossers of today, but the thing is, does Hollywood even make movies like that nowadays? Really, Pirates and Spiderman are two of the best of that fun blockbuster breed of this decade, easily.

Like I said...... It's all a matter of opinion .. This thread could go on forever and not everyone would agree.

It has always been my opinion that a film earns exactly what it deserves.

Does this mean I in any way think the all time gross top 10 is the all time best film top 10? Not a chance.

It simply means that films are in fact a business when it comes down to it, they make money based on how they appeal to the audience at the time. No more, no less.

Frankly, its about as valuable a barometer as to how "good" a film is as the Oscars are, only with this list, you know how wide the appeal actually was.
