Did anyone else think the movie's theme -- having faith, etc -- was almost a complete rehash of Signs? That scene where Giamatti is having that emotional talk while holding Story is almost a carbon copy of when Mel Gibson was talking to god while holding his son.

Just to keep my review short, I dont think it was as bad as critics say it was but I could understand some of the flaws about the movie. Think of it this way, imagine a good novel by Stephen King like The Stand or It being compressed into a 1 and half hour movie. It just doesnt work. The underlying problem of the script is its quite complex but its being crammed into 2 hrs. The tenants around the building seem to comply with Paul Giamonti's every command without hesitation, I mean they dont doubt any of the fictionality like some of the Stephen King characters do. They all seem to go along with the ride without any real conviction or hesitation. I mean the movie would be better explained if they somehow show why Cleveland or any of the characters gone to great lengths to help the stranger, like maybe the Lady helping them cope with current problems they have. But of course all of this intervention would have best been made into a miniseries as opposed to a 2 hr movie

i think i've made up my mind to see LITW on DVD. the reason is there is so many negative review for LITW, the bad box office factor on the opening day, and still dissapointed with The Village. thanks alot guys (for those who have seen the movie and gave out the review)

To clarify, it was well made but lacking. It felt like the story was just a bit ... off I guess, as if there was something missing from it. While Shyamalan definately has an amazing director's eye and his films are always beautiful to watch, there was just something that wasn't as good as it could have been this time. There was a bit too much unintentional humor and some of the acting was hammed up far too much.
Overall, an enjoyable, if dissapointing and lacking film. Probably Shyamalan's weakest effort. B

Well, I actually loved it...
The film critic character didn't work for me. It felt out of place and obvious, and brought the film to a screeching hault at certain points.
Other than that, though... It was magnificent. Beautiful, heartbreaking, captivating. I was enraptured from the opening frame.

Easily the best of Shyamalan's movies, Lady in the Water is the first of his movies that I wish was even longer...
Loved the exposed telling of the tale; loved the acting, the setting, the tone; loved the mythical resonance, the fairy tale splendor; loved the characters and their roles; I loved this whole freakin' movie!

This thread went from tremendously awful reviews on one page to tremendously good reviews on the other page.

All his films are about 100min, so that would be too low of a running time to be able to even be released in theaters I think.

If a story fits in 75 minutes - so freakin' what!?! Movies aren't bananas ya buy by the pound!
