"Chicks with picks" is one of the descriptions being bandied around for Neil Marshall's horror movie The Descent. It follows six women on a caving expedition in the Appalachian mountains. It goes horribly awry when they become trapped in an unexplored underground network that's home to some particularly nasty beasties. Isolating a sextet of characters against a deadly foe seems to recall Marshall's earlier werewolf cult hit Dog Soldiers. But anyone expecting a repeat of that film's mix of action, comedy and horror is in for something of a shock.

"With Dog Soldiers, I wanted to make more of an entertaining romp of a movie," says Marshall. "It has a few shocks, it has a few laughs. This one dispenses with the laughs and goes straight for the throat. I deliberately didn't want to repeat the formula and make the same film twice. I knew I wanted to do a really scary film and terrify the life out of people."

Despite the familiar convention - a group picked off one at a time by ferocious and often unseen assailants - The Descent incorporates some unusual twists, particularly its all-female group of protagonists. "It was never an issue," maintains Marshall, when quizzed about potential reservations from financiers. "The fact that they're all women isn't an issue. The film isn't a chick flick, it isn't about girl issues, it's about survival issues."

I know the director Neil Marshall was trying to get a U.S. release deal. Last I heard that some studio (maybe Miramax) was about to take it on. Haven't heard anything beyond that, but it may be a release date I'm thinking sometime next year because the flick called The Cave is being released this year.

August 2005 is the set release...

i'm glad you will all get to see it on the big screen too. It rocks.

it made more than WOLF CREEK internationally...

$9,640,481 from what i can find.

So whats to say it can't break the $16M total WC made?

I thought LGF picked this one up. If so, I could definitely see it pulling a gross of say 12/32 million.

Oh the same person who made Dog Soldiers did this? That was pretty damn good.

BOM has this listed for an August 2006 release date. If that's true, I can't wait.

A different ending for the US, eh?

I'm guessing that means:

[spoil]It gives the film a happy ending. In the European edit, the lead girl seemingly escapes the cave and flees in a car, only to cut to her waking up, still stuck in the cave with increasingly loud beastie noises swarming around her.[/spoil]

If so, that sucks a little, though I can cetainly see why they'd do it. I did leave the theatre feeling a bit morbidly depressed. But then, I got the same way when I left the last five Steve Martin flicks - and you bastard yanks don't edit those fuckers for my benefit.

I just saw the film, it was INCREDIBLE. One of the best horror films I've ever seen, hands down. I'm not sure if I've ever seen one that was more intense. About the only thing I'd change is actually the ending.

[spoil]I really, really think that the happy ending would not be a bad thing for this film. I can completely respect the filmmakers wanting everyone to die in the end. However, I think that the original ending is a bit too much of a cheat. We see her escape in a feasible way, confront her car-related fear, everything. Having over 5 minutes of the ending be a dream is just as cheap to me as having her get in a car crash and die, then have the screen fade to black. [/spoil]
I still LOVED the movie either way, that's just a little bit of a "if I could have made the film my way" rant.

Quite excited to see this in a few weeks. I've avoided watching my DVD copy because I'd rather see it in theaters first.

So does this open in the US?

Cuz I thought this was coming out like, a yr point five ago, but am seeing lots of trailers just now. I think I might watch it.

PS - What's it about? Besides the people going into the caves.

It's coming out on August 4th.

BTW, for those interested, you can see The Descent on July 26th. It's not a free screening (you still have to buy tickets), but still, kinda cool: http://www.fangoria.com/descent/
