Jumping down a couple spots on the charts - reasonably nice hold by Prada. Fox deserves all the kudos its gotten for one of the greatest counter programming release dates in quite some time.
I'm still wowzered by the DMC number.

Great hold by Click actually! (-34.6%). Cars is the standout however (-27.9%). Solid average for Scanner Darkly as well.
For the weekend, I see this:
Fri $55.5
Sat $44.4 m -20% ($99.9 m after 2 days)
Sun $37.74 -15%
Weekend: $137.64 m (2.48 multiplier).

So we've only had 3 films ever make more than $40.5 m on opening day, with 2 of those times in the past month and a half!

$55.5m O_O MY GOD!!!
Beat Sith OD by 5m.
Beat X3 OD by 10m.
So it pretty much has single day records for fri,sat & sun, to go along with OD & OW records.
55
47
38
$140m
part 3 opening weekend should equal or best it cause this movie was as great as the first and had a killer last shot of Captain Jack Sparrow.

Pirates already has made 78.7% of the biggest Disney 3day opening weekend ever, in just its first day!
It has 16.3% of the total gross of Disney's biggest film ever (Finding Nemo).
It has 18% of the total gross of the original film already.
It has 44% of Superman Returns' total 10 day gross already in just its first day.

Man you know I really got to question Warner Bros. on there release of Superman. I mean Superman hadn't been around since the 80's I think, they couldn't have expected everyone to rush out and see it. And why a WEEK before Pirates everyone knew this was going to be huge and the most anticipated movie of the year for a lot of people. They should have claimed Memorial Day before X-Men or at least put it in early or middle of June. But right before pirates come on!

weekend projection
Friday: 55.5 million
Saturday: 45 million -19%
Sunday: 36 million -20%
Weekend Total: 136.5 million (i will be super conservative because i don't want to go all crazy like x-men 3)
It will have the best Friday, Saturday and Sunday ever and therfore the best weekend in histroy and will beat spideys record.

Blasephmy. I dare any film in the next two years to break ROTS Thursday record in the middle of May. And I dare any film to break ROTS midnight showings. Besides, ROTS 4-day record will probably end up being safe. Don't you dare put down its opening.
Settle down Magnus

This hasn't been a good summer for WB at all. But on the plus side, its a role reversal at Disney. Before Pixar was #1 w/ Nemo, then POTC at #2, for the summer, now it could be switched, just not as close as it was last time...

ROTS's opening day was actually more impressive because it was in the middle of May and on a Thursday, and a year earlier (inflation).

Well, on movies other than POTC2:
Click had a good hold, as I somewhat expected. It won't even drop 40% for the weekend. Actually, now I think it will end up with $145 million judging by this hold. The ony hit it will experience will be next weekend from two comedies.
Superman Returns crashes and burns, but seriously, was that really unexpected. With around $22 million this weekend, it should still stand at a respectable $142 million by the end of the weekend. An expected drop of 58%. I see it ending with $190-195 million now.
The Devil Wears Prada suffers a bit of a harsher drop than expected, but I fully expect it to rebound within the next weeks and soon start bringing in higher weekend and weekday grosses than Superman, on track to a total of $112 million.
Cars could fend off Pirates pretty well too. Looks like it will actually be able to secure the #2 spot of the summer (and likely the year) with $245 million, unless Monster House and The Ant Bully hit it too hard.
The Lake House dropped a bit more than I thought, but still held up fine against POTC2. I see $55 million for the total now.
Nacho Libre didn't survives Pirates very well, but is still heading towards a total of $83 million.
Waist Deep surprises me a little bit, seeing as it held pretty well. It'll drop less than 50% this weekend and should find itself on a way to $23-24 million.
The Da Vinci Code will ultimately pass Saving Private Ryan, finishing just above it with $217 million.
X-Men: The Last Stand was ultimately killed this weekend and will top out with a very solid $235 million.
The biggest surprise to me, is probably how well The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift held up against Pirates and despite losing over 800 theatres. It'll hit $63 million and actually finish with a better multiplier than its predecessor.

No. People being off from work (some) and schools/colledges helps the friday's midnights and matinees a lot. Movies' opening weekends tend to be more frontloaded in July.

Wow, this Friday was $78.5 m by the 13 movies tracked. $188.4 m is the biggest 3day weekend ever for the top 12. We need on average a 2.4 multiplier for the weekend to top that, and 2.55 to top $200 m. I REALLY hope we top $200 m.
