A 2.25 multiplier is not mixed word of mouth, its horrendous word of mouth. Some fanboys may have liked it, but a film with the 2nd worst multiplier of all time for $50 m + grossers is not even merited mixed word of mouth imo.

With summer weekdays too.

Yeah, this movie is ultimately a make-or-break for Shyamalan. He isn't nearly as established as Spielberg is (not yet at least), so he can't fumble as often as he has.

$22 million opening, and a total from $50-100 million depending on how good it is.

I'd argue he's only fumbled once, with the Village. Unbreakable, while not a 100 million grosser, was still generally considered good and did have decent legs. Signs had good legs too. So if the Village fumble is enough to consider it "often" i'd say your standards are too high.

I meant fumble as often as Spielberg. Spielberg has made plenty of crap along with plenty of great or good movies.

It would be toxic, unless he came back with something LOTR-quality. Despite his gimmicks and Hitchcock-wannabe-isms, I have faith that he can turn around and make gold here. So: 22/90 for now.

It actually had 4 drops around 50% until it's 6th weekend which is pretty much terrible for 2000. The multiplier was 2.6, although to be fair it opened on Thanksgiving weekend.

I hope there's no twist ending. Those are so played out, especially in his movies where you expect them. They only work when you're not looking for one. Besides, twist endings have a tendency to ruin replayability. That's why Signs is still my favorite, the ending wasnt a twist.

I guess I got the numbers wrong, I thought it opened in the high 20s and ended in the 90s. ALWAYS CHECK YOUR FACTS!! DAMN IT!

I still wouldnt really consider it a fumble, though.

It opened with 30.3m 3-day, but don't forget the 15.7m it had earned in the first two days before that. So, a 30.3m weekend gave it just under 80m in calculating the multiplier.

Well the trailers did show the monsters. I think that's convincing enough that there is something dangerous out there. But the twist could be something like... *blank mind* Meh I'll get back into that.

Too obvious. The TV spots and trailers kinda showed it like that.

My favourite is The Village because it had a supposed twist, but not really. By the time you came to it, it meant absolutely nothing because the movie proved to be far deeper than just some silly horror movie. There was a lot more metaphorical things at work, as well as an unexpected, surprisingly touching love story lead by Howard's excellent performance. Ultimately, the twist wasn't meant to shock, but to delve the story forward so that Ivy is able to realize the forest isn't dangerous, and she is able to save the one she loves by fetching medecine. The whole situation is pushed even further considering she is blind (so well portrayed thanks to Howard). And the older cast members are terrific in this film.

Anyways, Howard's involvement again in another Shyamalan movie makes me excited. And there was an early review somewhere that I read that said this movie succeeds because Shyamalan drops the signature twist, or made it work or something. Can't remember which. In any event, nothing negative yet, which is good that isn't developing early negative buzz. Even the advertisement suddenly became a LOT better, with an awesome final trailer and those 2 great TV ads.
