Post Johnny Depp... a shoo-in?
This topic really hasn't been discussed recently, but I wanted to throw it out there since it is timely.

We have Johnny Depp who is starring in a very high profile sequel to a role which he was previously nominated for. A role which garnered him a *ton* of press and some major awards (SAG among them) who many think should have *won*. Who followed up a year later with another nomination for Finding Neverland.

If we assume that Pirates (or at least Capt. Jack Sparrow's part) is good (just as we hope for for any other actor that is mentioned here)... what do you guys see his chances of at least being in the top 5 for Best Actor this year? With Johnny and Capt. Jack we're over the "not an Oscarish movie" hump at this point.

Will this be the bone that the Academy throws to the audience? Can he win for a sequel to a character he was already nominated for? Does his pretty respectful career play into it at all?

Keep in mind that, look at the slate and the more "modern" fare we have this year, Pirates is looking like it will be a hit with the technicals as it fits more into the mold of a period piece (I would predict Visual Effects, Make-Up, Costumes, Sound, Sound Effects, etc.).

Oh, good question. I never even thought about Oscars.

If it makes sense to say that they might not nominate him just because the character isn't as "fresh" as he was the first time around, that's what I'd say is holding him back.

And also if the movie disappoints or something.

But otherwise...

I don't know. I think he has a shot. Maybe more than that.

Yeah DK, that was my thought.

I mean, assuming that it's good of course.

I was just thinking of this this morning while I was working and semi-watching Pirates 1 on TV.

I don't know...even if it's good, it was already not an "Academy role" the first time around. For them to nomionate it twice...I doubt it.

I think he'll get a nom as long as the movie isn't trashed, and no more. Al Pacino couldn't do it for The Godfather II, I don't think Johnny will either. I just don't see them giving it to a pirate who fights monsters, it'd be like nominated Spiderman II for Best Picture. It'd be too strange.

A nom is likely though.

Has anyone ever been nominated twice for the same role?

We've had 2 actors nominated for playing the same person at different ages.

But even with LOTR steamrolling through the Oscars, the great Sir Ian couldn't muster another nom.

I'm certain Depp will get a GG nom. If SAG follows, and the crowd is weak, maybe it's possible.

The playing field would have to be very weak (at this point it isn't, but who knows) for him to get nominated a second time, because frankly there isn't much originality he can bring to this character that wasn't there the first time around.

I also think the Academy threw a nomination at him because Pirates was sucha massive, unforseen hit that they had to acknowledge it. But who knows, if the Academy is going to try and be more mainstream than last year (Crash made 1/7 that ROTK made, and only 1/2 of M$B), then maybe it could happen.

At this point though I'd say no, no win, no nomination even.

But did SAG, BAFTA, Broadcast Film Critics, Golden Globes, etc. all have to nominate him (and in SAG's case give him a win)? I don't think it was a fluke of the popularity of the film, I think many thought he should be nominated for his performance in the film (which conversely made it it more successful).

I also don't think the playing field is that strong this year compared to previous years.

Certainly a possibility.

Paul Newman was nominated for The Hustler and won for The Color of Money playing the same role (Fast Eddie) right? Also, Bing Crosby won for Going My Way and nominated for the sequel Bells of St. Mary's. Other people nominated twice for the same role are Peter O'Toole (Henry II) and Al Pacino (Michael Corleone). So the precedent is there.

No way, Depp has already been awarded for Pirates. The most Pirates will do is up his visibility so that he's on the list of those "owed" (right behind Heath Leger.)

I don't think Heath Ledger is really considered "owed" at this point honestly.

Ledger owed an oscar? One good performance doesnt mean you're owed anything.

Good God, men!!!

Of all Depp's great acting work, if the Academy rewards him for reprising his role in this sequel, then they might as well fold up the whole Oscar reputation and leave town by nightfall...

I actually agree with bradley... No recognition for Edward Scissorhands or Ed Wood, but for this?

I don't even think he'll get a nomination. He'll get a GG nomination, and probably win (he lost to Bill Murray in 03), but another Oscar nod? Doubtful.

Don't worry, it happens to even the best occasionally -- luckily it rarely lasts long...

I think someone hacked into Bradley's account. All joking aside you're absoultely right, it wont happen anyways though.

Nah, I don't think he will get in. The nomination for the first one was award enough, and even if he is just as good in this one, people will get a "been there, done that" feel from him.

The new AICN review has me excited for his performance. They say that (I'm summing up here) he hasn't lost any of the exuberance and originality that he showed in the original.
