Post Emmy nominations: your predictions
They're announced July 6, or something. Only a couple weeks away.

So, ready...

Go.

Because the Emmys are stuck in 2000, The West Wing and Will & Grace will probably sweep.

I'd say Lost S2 could still give West Wing a run for its money but it's up in the air because West Wing is like Emmys favorite show.

With the main sitcomes gone and Desperate Housewives in a lackluster second season, W&G could easily claim best comedy but there still might be room for a surprise. The only problem is the other probably nominees (Office, Earl, Arrested?) are too small on their own and might cancel one another's votes.

I don't see The West Wing getting drama...it seems like it's time has passed, losing the last two years. Honestly, and I'm not saying this because it's my favorite show, I think Six Feet Under will win it. If they submit the last four episodes, they should be a lock. Here are my semi-unbiased predictions:

The West Wing

Next Up: Lost, House

Drama Actress
Patrica Arqutte, Medium

Hugh Laurie, House
Dennis Leary, Rescue Me
James Spader, Boston Legal

Lauren Ambrose, Six Feet Under
Candice Bergen, Boston Legal
Blythe Danner, Huff
Rachel Griffiths, Six Feet Under

Next Up: Jean Smart, 24; Chandra Wilson, Grey’s Anatomy

Drama Supporting Actor
Alan Alda, The West Wing
Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Lost
Oliver Platt, Huff
William Shatner, Boston Legal
Forest Whitaker, The Shield

Next Up: John Spencer, The West Wing; Michael Imperioli, The Sopranos

James Woods, ER

Next Up: Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, Law & Order: SVU; LL Cool J, House

A lot of your predictions seem to be right on the money, Chris. And a lot of these seem to be the general consensus over at The Envelope forums, which has some pretty hardcore experts. (I believe I've seen you there, no?)

These would be my picks, as well.

The Sopranos is the perennial here, and it's coming off a season (or half-season, or whatever) that, while not the most critically hailed, still garnered a lot of buzz. It's a lock.

Lost is also a lock, as even a crappy season wouldn't have kept the reigning champ from a second nomination. I think the submitted episodes are very solid, not to mention the fact that the one that introduces the other side of the island is very much a standalone episode, which is a great advantage when these panels are watching only a couple episodes.

Six Feet Under and The West Wing are sort of in the same boat here in that they're both often referred to as "tired" nominees, and yet both finished off their final seasons strongly -- maybe even uncharacteristically strongly. (I don't watch The West Wing, but it's what I've heard.) Six Feet Under killed off a major character in the tail end of its season, which provided for about four knockout episodes and a creative rebirth of sorts. All of those episodes, I believe, are being submitted, which includes its epic 75-minute finale, "Everyone's Waiting" (which also seems to be generating some buzz in the writing/directing categories). I think Six Feet is safer than The West Wing, but West is still pretty much in.

24 is also coming off a strong season, and I'd say it's virtually safe, except for Grey's Anatomy, the buzz show of the season. I'd say 24 and The West Wing are most susceptible, but I don't think this year is Grey's' (apostrophe overkill). Next year, though, yes.

The only other shows that really pose a threat are Huff, which could make it in but is at a disadvantage with only half of its season eligible, House, and Rescue Me. The competition's too great for the former two, though, I say, and Rescue Me is still too small.

So yeah. Sopranos, Six Feet, West Wing, 24, Lost.

I know, big shake up. But hey. *shrug*

Side note: Believe Boston Legal is going for Comedy Series this year, guys.

And, Chris, I believe Jon Cryer is also Lead Actor for Two and a Half Men.

If there's one thing you can count on, it's that the emmy nominations will always be predictable.

It is? I thought it switched from comedy back to drama. Or did it switch back to comedy again?

Cryer actually went supporting last minute.

It's iffy if this new voting system is going to do anything. It could do next to nothing, it could actually spice things up a bit.

If it does, we'll see it in the comedy series category, I'd say. And lead acting categories.

I hope the new voting does something. I lost all interest in the Emmys after the same people/shows won 6 years in a row. It's really annoying. And it happens every new generation of shows.

How dumb, he and Charlie Sheen literally have equal screen time. Oh, well.

Boston Legal could've switched back to Drama, but last I heard it was Comedy. I'm probably wrong.

I heard Arrested Development wasn't submitted for best comedy this year. The actors all have campaigns, and the episode Development Arrested is up for writing, but that's it.

It did switch back to drama, by the way. Which I think is crap, but... yeah.

Everytime you speak of this it's as if you're implying that HBO is somehow unworthy of the praise.

Shake harder, boy!

*shakes fist*

The Sopranos sucked this season, though.

HBO is the Miramax of TV. On the positive side, like Miramax, HBO now and then puts out something deserving of the praise.

This is a hard category. There are about 9 shows that have a decent shot.

AD is in. Swan song nomination, great submission tapes, beloved perennial. Curb is in. I think. It has a good, hour-long tape. And it's been nominated every year since it's been eligible, I believe. Entourage has gotten a lot of buzz since its last season, and I think it's in, too. I don't really know anything about its tapes, though. Scrubs has the potential for being dropped for something like Earl, but Scrubs was nominated last year, and this year was an even better season. I'm crossing my fingers, but I think it's in.

If the panel is in any way responsive the way it should be, Housewives should be out. I'm reluctant to predict that it won't be nominated, though, just because it's Housewives. And people like it. I don't know. For now, I'll leave it out of my predictions. Mainly bias, though.

Weeds is a solid show. I like it a lot. But it doesn't have enough knockout episodes, or comedy for that matter, to make it into the final five.

If the panel is responsive, they'll also remove Will & Grace. Unfortunately, the episode NBC is submitting, I believe, is the live pilot. It's a hilarious episode, I'll admit, but mainly due to the actors cracking up mid-line. Funny? Sure. Skilled, smart comedy? Not so much. I'm afraid the Acadmey will be reluctant to pass up this perennial, though, and not give it a swan song nomination. I'm going to leave it off my predictions, though. Just because I have a little faith in the panel.

And again, it's probably just because I love the show, but I think The Office has a better shot at making it in than Housewives does. GREAT submissions (Casino Night, I think) and some decent buzz. I'm probably stretching here, but I think it'll be in.

My predictions...

Comedy Series
Arrested Development
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Entourage
The Office
Scrubs

That might just be the best line-up ever.

I would love if those were the nominations, but i doubt they will be as then the Emmy voters would have their hands tied. All five shows would be deserving of an award for best comedy, and i am certain that the emmy voters would be damned before they allow that to happen. I mean, look at all the guest stars on W&G. How can the voters be expected to resist so many "stars" on a single show?

I'd be willing to predict W&G, but I don't know which show to throw out in place of it.

It kind of puzzles me how they couldn't vote for The Office. I mean, c'mon, Casino Night = perfection.

Which means they won't. But I can dream.
