My orientation was excruciating. It was also two days. But there are colleges that do a 2 hour orientation. I was so incredibly jealous. And I was even more jealous that my sister somehow managed to get out of it when she started college.

Everything in college is pointless till junior year, just try to make the best of it. Good idea about the mp3 player, if only they had them back in the neolithic era when I had to do it.

My orientation was like 3 days I think.
It's gonna be the end of my first year and I've only seen 1 person I've met from orientation on campus.
But, I actually enjoyed my orientation. And it's also what made me finally decide to come out

Ugh, I feel for you. Mine was over 2 days and I remember it being soooo boring. And you're right, the people are great, but I have never seen any of them since.

After college, you will be able to add this maxim to your repertoire:
Quote: College = pointless
Suffer it politely when you wake up to that reality

Did I meet some great new people? Yeah. But did I want to take a gun to my head by the end of the whole thing? Yes.
Honestly, all the stuff you do in these two days could be done at home. I could have easily looked at a map and found my way across campus. Its a big place, but its not that hard to navigatate at all. Registaring for classes can be done online now, so no point of doing it there espically since the advisors are dumb and have no idea what is right for you. And there is no point in trying to give freshmen a "feel" of what college will be like by sticking them in the BEST dorms in the campus. That's just making us feel a bit better about campus life, and then come September, we're going to see our REAL dorms and be like, "shit. We're fucked." Thank you for putting my hopes up College Park.
Now, I did meet some great new people, but honestly, in a 25,000+ student campus, am I honestly going to see these people ever again? Probably not.
I already went through this horrible process, but if you have not, I STRONGLY advise that if you're forced to go, that you bring either an MP3 player or a handheld game or something to keep you occupied because it will be boring as hell. Oh, and you probably would want to bring your own food, cause after about the 2nd time you eat the food there, you'll be sick of it already.
And whatever you do. DO NOT BRING MONEY FOR THE GIFT SHOP! The fucking bastards trick you into buying overpriced shit for no reason(my fucking friend wasted $35 on a fuckin pair of shorts).
You probably met some of my closest friends.
Terps 4EVAAAAAAA.
Cornell orientation is RIGHT before school starts, thankfully.

Im glad I never had to do anything like that.
I would have if I didn't go to a community college for the first 2 years. I think the school I went to afterwards, UIC, requires freshman to stay the night. But, since I technically wasn't a freshman, I just had to go to the tour the first day.

Yes, orientation is pointless and you're so right about them sticking you in the best dorms. The dorm I stayed in for orientation was fantastic; the dorm I lived in not so much. I found that orientation amounts to alot of waiting around followed by pointless speechifying. And yes, the registration process is annoying because you have these "advisors" constantly asking you if you need any help as if they know what classes you want to take, etc.

Agree with everything but the dorm stuff.
Orientation is why I decided to live off campus...no way I'd've lasted more than a semester in that room.

My college is so annoying that in addition to the pointless 2 day orientation, we had to take a pointless 1 credit class our first semester. It was basically just the orientation, but spread out over 12 weeks. I got a C+. My dad was proud.

Mine was utterly useless. My friend and I left halfway through the first day, went and got our ID cards on our own, and then went to a movie. And I didn't go back for the second day. Such a waste of time.
Luckily, it was right before the semester started, so I didn't have to start thinking about school early or anything.

lol, what's there to tell. I think I've explained it all before too. lol
It was probably when these 4 students were giving personal speeches about how coming to the university like changed them. One of them was a chinese woman who was like the odd one out of her family, really artsy and her parents never "got" her. The second was a gay guy from Irvine talking about being closested in high school and coming out when he started ucla. The third was also a gay guy but he talked more about the constraints and what not of being latino. And the last one was someone who was in and out of foster care and then did some time and now is all cleaned up and found a new life at ucla.
It was the second one that hit me. (obviously )
So, instead of probably delaying it a few more months or who knows how much longer, the day after I came home I came out to my first best friend and then to you guys. Then to my second best friend (both female). Then I went on a week long cruise with my family which was TORTURE because I needed to tell them but didn't wanna spoil their vacation
Then, I told my parents and my whole world that had JUST opened up came crashing down.

I took college classes (on university grounds) while still in high school, so thank God they left me alone once I actually became an incoming college student.

Hey, it's a pity post of the day. You know, to make me feel better.
I'll be back to normal in a few months and then you can get the posts of the day again.

But laughter is the best medicine, so they say. "They" being medical text books required for med school.
