This is one of the more mainstream critics awards and thus one of the better Oscar predictors. Their top 10 usually include all the best picture nominees.

Yep. This is a great indicator. If any movie doesn't make it to their top 10, it's highly doubtful that it'll get an oscar nom.

Thoughts:

1. Closer is dead.
2. Hotel Rwanda cotinues to do well in Picture and Actor.
3. Ray received a lot of support, even getting best director. The No. 5 is down to Ray and Hotel Rwanda now IMO.
4. Best Actor race continues to be so competitive. Neeson couldn't even make into top 6. That hurts Kinsey's best picture chance. And any chance of Clint Eastwood getting nominated seems to be gone without the Globe and BFCA noms.
5. Happy for Uma Thurman, and Catalina Moreno, who didn't get Globe support. Bad for Julie Delpy. I think Kate Winslet will get in for the No. 4 spot, and the final one will be decided among the 3.
6. Double nomination again for Jamie Foxx. Given the supporting actor category not being very strong, that's a distinct possibility for Oscar as well. I still have say though, Foxx is the LEAD in Collateral! Don't push for a category that he doesn't belong just so that he could be nominated and possibly win.
7. Good that Kate Winslet got double nominations as well. She needs all she can get.
8. Best Acting Ensemble is weird, with 3 films not in the top 10 list. That makes Sideways look even stronger.
9. Millon Dollar Baby continues to miss screenplay nom.
10. The Animated Feature noms will look exactly the same for Oscar.
11. The Phantom of the Opera is still alive, but as with Globe, it didn't get much love that it needs. It still won't make the final 5.
12. For the documentary, with the other 3 not eligible for Oscar, Super Size Me continues to strengthen as the frontrunner for the award.

Closer, deservingly is being forced out

I disagree with that one. IT's not the kind of movie that has universal acclaim from critics (the film itself) to get in here. Did Chocolat? (I'll look it up in a second. I'm guessing not...and yes there's a big difference between chocolat and closer, but...)

It still has a really good chance of at a SAG ensemble nomination.

If Foxx somehow manages a double nomination, I can't wait for Chris Rock to tear into him during his opening monologue.

If it can't get love from critics, where can it get love from? The box office seems to indicate the general public doesn't like it very much either. People always try to use Chocolat as an example, but that had Miramax, and its subject matter is much sweeter than Closer, which gave it much a better box office run.

BFCA is a critic group, but it is the one that matches the taste of Oscar the most because it includes people who are not critics. They prize themselves on that, and for past few years, all 5 nominees come from its top 10 list. If Closer can't make it here, there is just no way it will make the oscar's final list.

My thoughts follow

1. I got 9 out of ten in the top 10 right Man, this year looks predictable :?

2. Closer IS dead as a Best Picture contender

3. Hotel Rwanda will get a Best Picture nom, it's getting the love it needs

4. Emmy Rossum has somewhat of a chance at a Best Actress nom with the 5th spot being anything but decided.

5. The Best Picture winner will be either Sideways or The Aviator or Million Dollar Baby. Anything else can be ruled out.

6. Javier Bardem is getting support over Liam Neeson, I think a nomination is guaranteed for him

7. Spanglish is DEAD DEAD DEAD

8. The 5th Best Actress nom will be between Emmy Rossum, Julie Delpy and Catalina Sandino Moreno

9. No inclusion of David Carradine for Best Supporting actor surely hurt his chanaces (that haven't been great to begin with)

10. The Best Supporting Actress list will probably match 5:5.

11. Sideways is a lock for the Best Adapted Screenplay win (I think it is adapted)

12. Best Foreign Movie will come down to House of Flying Daggers vs. The Sea Inside.

13. Don Cheadle is gaining steam pretty fast, I think he'll edge out DiCaprio or Depp for a nom.

14. The Phantom of the Opera is still dead without a Director or a Screenplay nom here as well as at the GGs.

I agree with Rod on this one. Hopefully it isn't dead. A nod for Nichols is likely, I think. DGA will tell more, and it is sure to do good with Emsemble at the SAG's.

I'm not sure it will be nominated, it's just outside my top 5 right now, so I'm not predicting a nomination. But I still think it's foolish to say its "dead."


A nomination for Mike Nichols is still very possible aslo, even if the film isn't nominated (there always seems to be a director nominated from a non best picture film).

Plus Owen and Portman seem to be safe bets at this point.

At least it could pull off a Cold Mountain-like showing or better. That's still excellent.

Yea, I don't think it'll get a Best Picture Nod at this point, but anything's possible. Owen, Portman, Adapted Screenplay and Nichols are all very possible. (3 are almost sure things, I think).

They played safe and considered any movie that may deserve best picture ... priceless!!

Hotel Rwanda stands at 84% at RT right now. Chances are increasing, I'd say

I just can't see Hotel Rwanda getting nominated.

Well, the subject matter is very important. It showcases one of the occasions when the UN completely failed which lead to the death of hunderds of thousands and despite UN's failure there was a brave man amidst the chaos who managed to save many lives.

The movie is getting critical acclaim, it made it to the National Board of Review, was nominated at the Golden Globes as well as at the BFCA for Best Picture. Don Cheadle is getting enough support as well. The fact that the movie is based on a true story just helps it further.
