I just don't understand why the fanboys get so worked up over this stuff. Mention the budget, marketing effectiveness, box office prospects, Pirates of the Caribbean 2 or the gay stuff (which is admittedly overblown, but funny) and they go completely insane. I had a guy go off on me on another forum for asking if there were any tracking numbers available yet.

It's as if people believe the predictions we make about Superman's performance or quality are going to have some actual bearing on what happens. We're morons talking out our asses on the internet. We might end up being accurate in the end, but our predictions are absolutely meaningless.

No excuses needed for a movie that makes almost $220m domestically and is not a sequel to a big movie or adaptation of a popular property (book, comic book etc).

It was a remake of one of the most popular films ever.

The thing is, Kong is a HUGE name, and absolutely everybody has hear of him It doesn't really count, because he's a classic pop culture icon. The movie did, however, still end up with a great gross, made a profit, was well-received and sold well on DVD, so no complaining there.

And this is from a HUGE Peter Jackson/LOTR/KONG fanboy so don't call me a hater.

Everyone has heard of Dracula, too. Doesn't mean a new movie staring Dracula would do gangbusters.

But a Dracula film with a Huge Director, Huge Budget, great cast, enormous hype, and awesome release date probably would.

I just really don't think you can call this an original film, as there was already huge awareness of the topic before it came out.

But the thing is, there was only hype in the industry and perhaps amongst movie buffs but obviously not the general populace as evidenced by the low opening day. Hell, Omen looks to be opening bigger than Kong.
