I don't get all you Superman loonies. X3 has a built in fanbase. The second film was beloved by everyone. It had very strong dVD sales and this is Memorial weekend. All of these factors are in favour of X3. How does this translate to into high numbers for Superman? I don't think it does. The franchise is still 20 years old and the last really popular one was 25 yers ago. The loonies are licking their chops thinking that this is going to segue into huge dollars for Superman. Don't count on it. X3 marketed itself brilliantly as the last film, the last stand, the last time to see these people in action. This is brilliant. The marketing for Superman is lackluster and uninteresting. I believe that Superman will do fine, but certainly not anything more than a low 200. X3 will do that in about 10 days. Clearly the victor this summer is X3 over Superman. Bet on it.

I completely agree. Superman's opening weekend will be smaller than X3's 2-day gross, and its total might be less than X3's 7-day total.

While I completely agree with you Baumer, I think its safe that it will pass Fantastic Four and Batman Begins at this point. I think that it may gross 60-70 opening weekend. However, with Pirates opening its following Wed, it will be hurt like T3 was with the original, though 4th of July may level it off all the same. I think anything over 250 million is wishful thinking. But I don't think 210 million is out of the question. The new trailer did get a lot more peoples attention.

But this is no Spidey or X2 that had the luxury of kicking off the summer. and Its not Batman Begins with its legs because Batman had the luxury of having no competition. Superman will unfortunately probably be good, but more or less hurt by the big hitter of Pirates. 210 million I think would be great though. and should not be deemed a disappointment even when looking at the budget.

X-Men doing big will hurt Superman. Out of all the previews Superman got the worst reaction at my theater, will Snakes on a Plane got an amazing reaction of cheering and talking.

I dont know about the reaction for Snakes on the Plane,it did get a reaction but I overhead someone say "What the hell was that?". Superman Returns trailer didnt play at all but it does seem like Ghost Rider did get a better reaction thatn Snakes at where I went which was surprising
As for SR, it will have to bring back faith to the comic book series like what BB did. Just because its been 20 years since the last one doesnt mean the hype will be as big as say having the first ever screen version adaptation

I don't think 200 mill is a disappointment either. I act ually think this is a risk bringing this film out. Its not like people were demanding another superman film. I want to see it, hell it's a summer film, and should be lots of fun. But that doesn't mean it is going to break records. It just seems that some have this delusional fantasy that Superman is going to swoop in with a massive haul. Not going to happen.

Guess finally it will depend on the quality of Superman Returns.
Cmon Batman Begins was bashed to hell before it came out and voilà the quality was great and it showed some nice gross....and then you should not forget...


A lot of the fanbase came from the two other X-Men movies directed by Singer. Well it seems that he left a such good taste in peoples mind so that they even did go and see X3 after all that Ratner bashing. So why shouldnt he bring that taste and quality not to Superman.

I agree though that POTC2 will hurt Superman a lot but I still see the possibility for Supes to fly pass 250.

Can we please stop bringin in Singer's fanbase. He really doesnt have one, maybe one that will result in 5 million more in gross. The majority of the people wont care, in fact, its not even mentioning his name in the trailers, because he is not a big name director outside of movie gurus like ourselves. Superman will depend merely on how good it looks. Since it looks decent to good, it should open a little more. The biggest problem with batman is that the marketing reallly sucked. Superman at least is doing a better job, and should be a lighter film for kids.

I would say only 2 directors really have that importance factor, and it is Speilberg and maybe Tarantino. Peter Jackson is already falling off from his high horse, as is Shamylan. one other might be Cameron because it will be heavily hyped as the first film since Titanic. Other than that, directors can be used for quality, not numbers.

If Superman makes between 205-250 it will be considered a success. I think it'll finish just shy of 250, but I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up a bit higher thanks to the opener and the July 4th weekend (Even with POTC 2).

The Da Vinci Code will make $200 million total. It doesn't matter whether Superman has a "better shot" or not, because the former will make it.

As for Superman, I'm sticking with the $210-220 million total I've been predicting forever.

But the public got more reaction out of the Snakes on a Plane trailer than Superman Returns at my showing of Xmen.
