 The 'Lost' Thread (Season 2)

Some people watch television that wipes their arses for them and calls them good boys and girls for getting the point that has a flashing arrow pointing at it. Several television shows that have strong ratings and a seemingly endless critical and viewer acclaim just do not put any effort in at all at providing interesting ways of connecting the dots. LOST is a show that is frustrating in its narrative because of its dual storytelling structure, but at the same time, at its core, it does not lay every detail out in massively obvious ways. Some viewers tend to look beyond the superficial and the obvious and those viewers will be the people who enjoy Lost much more than the rest.

Funny, sometimes I wonder if everyone who watches tv can't tell the difference between shitty and quality storytelling.

The thing I wonder about is why people I thought were logical in the past can't wrap their mind around the relatively simple ideas and concepts that this show employs to push the story forward. It's not like its brain surgery. I actually wonder if you post the things you post lately because you are getting some sort of weird Felicity-like-piss out of seeing people's reactions.

I just think you are in a place where you are not enjoying it for whatever reason and have chosen to amplify every blemish (and every show has them) beyond proportion. Maybe it's fair that the opposite is said of me, that maybe I'm too forgiving. But I don't really think so? I can be critical when the show really deserves it in my vew.

But damn you for saying that I can't tell the difference between quality storytelling and not. It works for me, I enjoy it, it's tense and I love the characters. Which is more than I can say of any other television show at the moment except for one (Battlestar).

Pushing a story forward and pushing the story in a thousand directions aren't the same.

Anyway, don't compare me to Michael please, I'm willing to except all manner of insults but that was pretty low.

Unlike Michael and you and a few other oddjobs running around here, my posting style remains fairly consistent. I don't feel the need to create fake accounts or spam the forum.

What I'm trying to tell you is I don't feel that this story is being pushed in a thousand directions. Lost is about the slow reveal and it works, with a few added pieces here and there. Not everything always lines up (your critisism of the disappearing monster is one of your more logical points). Every little piece that's introduced seems to feed into the larger whole of what's going on. I personally don't want that "what" revealed now, or maybe completely ever depending on how it is handled.

It wasn't really an insult. Despite the fact that Michael and I really hated each other when he first started I've gotten to know him and he's pretty smart and down to earth outside of the forum. I chose to believe that the logical and less-mean-spirited Loyal that I thought I knew was still there and lurking under some small Lostian "social experiment".

I would dispute that.

Loyal, im not 120% on this because I'm not the best admin, but im pretty sure that administrators are not supposed to go and provoke arguments in every thread they post in. Less responsible is abusing your users, especially ones that have provided help with site development on several occasions.

I guess i just feel sorry for you as a person more than anything else. Titwank or not.

I thought I should point out that I'm not the one who pissed in the pond. I don't go to the 24 or Desperate Housewives thread and start talking about things I don't like about the show, I just don't watch the show and let the things pass.

All season you and a few others have been whining about why you don't like Lost to the point where you are becoming insulting. Still you watch, and still you complain. And when we like the show, we're the ones who are somehow screwed up? Discussion is one thing, but we're waaaaaaaaay beyond that now.

After all YOU just did, I really hope that wasn't a lecture. It wasn't, right? Nah, couldn't be...nah.

And not to split hairs Michael, but I'm not an admin.

In any case, I never asked for help in the past and I'm certain not to in the future.

No, you don't. And no one ever said you did. But people go into the 24 thread, the AI thread, the TAR thread, and voice their issues, their dislikes. Same goes for virtually every film thread created here. No one can tell me what or what not to watch, nor can I tell people.

Lost isn't some sacred cow.

Of course it isn't, but it's also 23-24 hours of your waking life last year that you dedicated to watching a show you seem to despise, religiously on a Wednesday night. This is not about critisism of a film that you watch once for 2 hours and then walk away from, this is a continual and ongoing choice to watch something that you've been telling us for weeks (if not months) that you don't really like.

I've made pointed references to the fact that some of the items you've brought up in the past do have some validity depending on interpretation, but the on-going hate and trolling in regards to Lost after you have expressed your ultimate disappointment with with the show is sad and angering.

It's obvious from about mid-season if not before, that you have completely closed off to Lost. There's nothing *wrong* with that, I just wonder why you continue to subject yourself to it. I will make a not-so-startling prediction that you will never, ever, like this show again, and that nothing will change your mind.

I didn't massacre schoolchildren Loyal, easy with the drama.
I have to say I did find it odd that I was asked for assitance on graphical issues last night on KJ especially considering the events that transpired on KJ previously.

I'm like Andaroo in that I generally stay out of threads of shows that I do'nt like much. It's not like it's a board rule but if I watch a Grey's Anatomy or Alias or something and think it sucks, I try to avoid going in there and bashing it when I'm clearly not one of the main fans. I'm not always good about that, just saying it's a general tendancy.

Like for example, Scrubs is awful, a waste of time that doesn't deserve to be on the air. But do I go posting that a lot in the Scrubs thread? No I let them have their delusion that it's something other than a crappy mediocre sitcom.

@loyal, did you watch the whole finale today on torrent or abc site? Because as of last night you seemed to have come in half way through and missed a lot of it.

I watched all of the final hour and over half of the first hour. I don't recall which minute mark I jumped in on, but I still have about 20 minutes or so of actual footage to watch from the beginning segment. I should be able to see it this weekend, and post an actual finale grade.

I'm pretty sure you broke you're own site rules here, but you're right - it's time to get back to show discussion.

Michael, this is getting irritating.

Like you, i don't agree with loyal regarding 24. However, that doesn't mean that you get to tell people that they broke their site's rules. You've done that to me before, and I told you that I don't appreciate comments like these. Especially coming from you.

From an interview with John Irving copyrighted last year:

JI: Dickens was and remains the most important author for me. I have read his books many times, and have even purposely not read one of them. I am saving it for a severe illness or a near-death experience. Something I will read when I have to despair of doing anything else. I have not read OUR MUTUAL FRIEND. That's the one I have saved.

Someone on another forum pointed that out. Weird isn't it? I wonder if he gets Lost royalties now.

After thinking it over, I've decided to give the finale an A. Despite the very end scene, which disappointed me, this was a brilliant finale. So much was revealed and so much more was left untouched for further seasons. I think the writers answered just enough questions to satiate the fans while leaving enough open. On shows like this, you don't want all the questions answered at once, you want a slow build-up with the mysteries gradually revealed.

We learned a lot in the show last night. How the plane crashed, what the button does, who Kelvin was, who made the blue light map, where the journals from the Pearl hatch went, who fake Henry Gale was, etc. It was a very revealing and interesting finale. Those who think that it was shitty obviously never liked the show in the first place, so their opinions are biased. Within the scope of the show, it was a fantastic episode.

This is why I'm not as anti-Michael as many here are, he's right in that most Americans are too literal minded.

Right. So just attacking someone for no contextual reason whatsoever is okay. I should at that to Oscars list.
