I am asking myself whether those who predict an opening below $70 million even care to take a look at the obvious signs and numbers.

A certain Robert Langdon cared to look beneath the obvious, and in doing so uncovered the greatest conspiracy of our time.
Coincidence? Or something far more stupid?

That sentence is so eloquant that it almost masks the sheer stupidity of it

Under $200 million total is unrealistic at this point. I think it's got a respectable shot at $300 million now, though I think it'll top out around $260 million total.

I doubt it will have good legs a la Passion of the Christ, which had the backing of the world's largest and most reliable "fanbase". Appearantly, it's not a good film, which I think could bring down repeated viewings or stragglers (even adult stragglers which tend to come in later), and the fanbase will rush out to see it on opening (Passion's "fanbase" is of a different breed). But I could be wrong. It can quite possibly clear $300 million even without a $100 million opening. And I still can't possibly see it open under $70 million.

Yeah, I don't see it having good legs now, especially with the Da Vinci fanbase.

Advanced ticket sales information from Movietickets and Fandango are hardly ever released, unless it's a mega-blockbuster like HP4 or Revenge of the Sith.

On the way home from work, I was listening to a local radio show in Vegas (Tim Callahan on 970AM). The 5PM hour was set aside for The DaVinci Code. The call-ins were from a wide variety of people. The guests incuded pastors, theologians and book lovers. A group of pastors mentioned on the show that they are going to the movie on Friday with their congregation.
The host asked two questions of his callers,
whether they had read the book and
the second, whether they were going to watch the movie.
The answer to both questions was "Yes" overwhelmingly.
I am not sure whether The Passion or F911 had Radio shows dedicate time to discuss them. This is the first time I have heard this kind of coverage for a movie.

Honestly, I think the reviews have reached the point that the media is going to jump at it, Reloaded-style.
I'm beginning to get a bad feeling about its legs.

Its legs might not be great, but I think if it can open at 65-90 it will make anywhere from 215-250.

And regardless of what the reviews say, I still think this will have a 3.2+ multiplier over the long haul. I've gotten to the point where I hardly pay attention to critics anymore. I wholeheartedly agree that hype and marketing are far more influential. I do have some question of the multiplier being over 3.2 if DVC does over $90M this weekend, though.

Baba AND friends, this is holiday weekend in Canada. When is the last time a film opened on a holiday weekend in Canada that is as hyped as this one, and actually falls by about 15% from Friday to Saturday. I'm sure you guys have your petty reasons for the film to perform the way you think it will, but it is guarnteed to be ginormous opening weekend. The fanbase is already built in for this one and we are all excited to see the film. Whether it is good or not remains to be seen and the film will reflect our opinions after its release. But my opinuion is that film has so much info, so much talking and so many elements that critics didn';t anticipate, and that is the cause for the apathy. There is a local radio show here where one of the hosts read the book and was excited to see it, and she said it was fantastic. But she also said that if you read the book you will love it and if you haven't then maybe you won't. Fair enough. But it's opening weekend figures are tracking at about 75-80 mill. I look forward to gloating when your negativity is proven wrong.

at this point, i dont even care if the movie is big, frontloaded or not. i'm looking for a bit of consistency in the argument. you've been consistent with it opening big and haven't said anything otherwise about how the weekend will span out.
consider this
you first say it'll have a big modnight gross
then it'll have a huge rush of fans going and seeing it
then finally say that on saturday, it wont /barely decrease.
you didnt say that but others are but honestly, it sounds like people are saying whatever they want to make things sound positive without realizing that they're contradicting themselves. this is just one of many examples.

You are right Baba, peopel are backpeddaling with this one and that is kind of silly. Even someone like Gitesh from BOG has backpedalled I'm sure. Before this cannes thing panned out the way it did, I bet he woudl haev predicted about 75-80 mill. This just proves that people are sheep. They have very little ideas of their own and let others influence their decisions. I think it is funny that all of a sudden critics think it was bad so that trumps the fact that 40 mill copies were sold which means at least 80 mill people read it. How teh film can fail this weekend is beyond me.
Yes, you can call me a DVC loonie. I liked the book, but moreso I like the fact that it offers an alternative to what we have been taught for 2000 years. That is my true joy from the book. And because of that, there are a plethora of others who want to see it as well.
I stand by my 80 mill OW
264 domestic (3.3 mutl)
375 OVS
Total of about 640 mill
I truly believe it can go higher, but this seems realistic to me.
