After trailer with X3, all the talk can be for SR is how effective its marketing is. Honestly, the awareness is there, it has the fanbase, and it has the holiday boost. The one factor that will determine if its opening will be huge or HUGE is how effective the marketing is.

sadly, all the marketing has been shit.

and as a lover of everything DC, it makes me very sad. fading away are my dreams of a superman/batman team up or **gasp** a justice league film.

Are you serious? Even if SR dissapoints, it'll still be profitable and the next one will be even more succuessful. Same thing that happend to BB.

The DC franchies are WB big francheis, and trust me, they are going to be alive for a while.

A Superman/Batman or a JL movie WILL happend...though I'm thinking in like 10 years. Still happening though.

nope. i disagree. This isn't an FF4 that just had to pull in decent numbers. This film suffers from the same problem Begins did. It had to show in some way that it can restore faith in the people. How did it do so? By first

a) Creating the best multiplier for any batman film, which for batman is unheard of as it pretty much introduced front loading in films.
b) An out of this world word of mouth.
c) Finally, a theatrical gross that actually helped make up a big part of the expense.

Batman's marketing suffered not due to bad material but due to a bad campaign in general. As i mentioend fduring the batman days, it almost felt like the people who were dishing out the marketing stuff were doing a great job and then whoever was in charge of executing it was fucking it up.

With superman, you've so far had some bad execution and on top of that, horrible material. its looking less and less likely that this film can pull the begins phenomon. Will it be considered the best superhero batman film like many debated when batman came out? I doubt it. not to say batman is consdiered the best superhero flick but it did spark this debate even amongst the non fans. right now, the chances of supes doing that are unlikely, which does not bode well for superman.

batman managed, at the end of the day, not to disappoint which allowed the creative team to stay together. superman disappoints and its back to reengineering.

That almost sounds like the BKB quote he used for his signiture about the Hulk bombing back in BOM
The problem the Superman movie also suffers is that it looks too campy for its taste yet it doesnt quite really show enough footage to even entertain the little kids either. The atmosphere for the movie looks like a combination of the Rocketeer, The Phantom, The Shadow and Sky Captain

That pose really makes the padding stand out on his shoulders. Apparently the cover itself is in 3D.

Variety officially made it public that Singer MAY not direct the remake of LOGAN'S RUN. According to Variety - if SUPERMAN RETURNS succeeds at the Box Office, those at Warners would like to be shooting in 2nd half of 2007 with Singer directing. As for LOGAN'S RUN - Variety floats the idea that V FOR VENDETTA director - James McTeigue could step in to helm it.

From Variety: "Bryan Singer may not direct the remake of "Logan's Run" after all. Warner Bros. and producer Joel Silver want to start lensing the sci-fi pic this fall, which would mean Singer might end up shooting two tentpoles -- "Logan's" and a "Superman Returns" sequel -- back-to-back. No one begrudges Singer for seeking a break from big-budget projects, although the filmmaker probably won't make an official decision either way about "Logan's Run" until "Superman Returns" bows in (June)."

Actually, I think having a few more big stars would have helped. Its understandable to go w/ an unknown for Superman, but I really would have wished for them to put in more starpower.

It would have helped but I don't think it hurts it. Spider-man 1 had little star power at the time but didn't really stop it. While SR is less than SM1 star power, it still won't hurt it I think. Its more of a neutral effect.

Yes, and that's understandable, but that had a $139 m budget. Superman has a $261 m budget. That type of budget NEEDS a guaranteed box office draw.

139m budget in 2002 was very high. I think only Titanic, Waterworld, and WWW had higher budgets. Lethal Weapon 4 and Armageddon had 1M more so its about the same budget.

SR is high but Kong and SM2 have both had simliar budgets in the past 2 years.

Though I do agree that star power would have helped it and I felt that James Caivezeal should have been Superman I think. He is at least not too well-known but still known.

$139 m was reasonable for tentpoles. Also, SM2 is a sequel to a top 5 of all time film, so it was completely warranted as their was more certainty. Kong's budget was too much.

Here are the films that have had higher/comparable budgets than Spidey before its release or in 2002, its year of release:

1 King Kong Universal 2005 $205.0 m $218.1 m 1.06
2 Titanic Para/Fox 1997 $200.0 m $600.8 m 3.00
3 Waterworld Universal 1995 $175.0 m $88.3 m 0.50
4 Wild Wild West Warner 1999 $175.0 m $113.8 m 0.65
5 Speed 2: Cruise Control Fox 1997 $150.0 m $48.1 m 0.32
6 Armageddon Disney 1998 $150.0 m $201.6 m 1.34
7 Lethal Weapon 4 Warner 1998 $140.0 m $129.7 m 0.93
8 Pearl Harbor Disney 2001 $140.0 m $198.5 m 1.42
9 Final Fantasy Sony 2001 $140.0 m $32.1 m 0.23
10 Men in Black II Sony 2002 $140.0 m $192.6 m 1.38
11 Die Another Day MGM 2002 $140.0 m $160.2 m 1.14
12 Treasure Planet Disney 2002 $140.0 m $38.1 m 0.27

While Spidy was pricey, $261 m, and $139 m are NOT comparable, even if it has been four years...

Credible sources have studio insiders themselves saying about $260 m, so I'm going to go with that, as thats the up to date and latest one.
