I'm upping mine to:
Opening Weekend: $83.5 million
Total Gross: $275 million
A slightly better opening and slightly better legs will secure $300 million for this.

There is too much controversy for this film to fail. I was in that group that figured on a robust but not record setting opening. Now I am not too sure. I'm sitting on the fence right now and I think it could go anywhere from 80-100 for the weekend. I still think it will make just north of 300 as well. This is a bona fide hit for sure.

This movie could do $160 m and I'd still see it as a major success as it is an adult thriller opening in the summer. It could double that total, but like I've said before, this film has alot more room to breathe than say a film like Poseidon or Superman does...

The reviews are bad from Cannes, but that isn't too surprising. They don't tend to like this type of film. But the book was always really really wordy, so that's probably not going to be a plus for the movie if Howard stuck very close to the book...

I wouldn't take the Cannes reviews too seriously with predictions. They did say that it's good entertainment, and if that's true, it doesn't have to be a fantastic film to have a nice multiplier (around 3.0-3.4x).

Re: The Da Vinci Code prediction thread
Magnus101 wrote: I'm surprised there isn't a thread of this. Plot(though most know it): A murder in the Louvre and clues in Da Vinci paintings lead to the discovery of a religious mystery protected by a secret society for two thousand years -- which could shake the foundations of Christianity. Release date: May 19 Director: Ron Howard Cast: Tom Hanks Audrey Tautou(most americans don't know her, but some may know her form Amelie) Ian McKellan Paul Bettany Alfred Moina Jean Reno Website: http://www.sonypictures.com/movies/thedavincicode/Teaser can be seen there. It was released in the summer, and has no like shots of the movie, just a guy with a deep voice saying some random stuff. Trailer will preimere with Kong. I saw the first looks at ET and this looks to be amazing. I have high hopes for this(VERY high hopes). Below is what i said in the BOM board. This film will break 300m and it will take the summer crown. Best release date. Big actors. Big director. Based off of a popular book. Contrvosey. And it will be an amazing film. The book has spawned soo many documenatires and special, and the thing is that many have not even read the book but know about it. And if you give a person a chance to read the book or watch the film first, they'll go to the film most of the times. And Sony, after a dissapointing year, is going to go full-swing to make this film huge. They will use the contrvosey too fuel it up. People have been waiting for that new blockbuster. People are getting tired of sequels and remakes. While remakes and sequels are huge, people desire something new thats amazing. DVC is going to be it. Oh, and last time Hanks/Howard teamed up for a summer flick: Apollo 13, which came 2nd in the summer and made about 250m adjusted. OW range: 80m - 105m. Passion opend with a 5-day of 125m. I think DVC 3-day can be near 105m if it can create that simliar hype. Total: 80-85m OW = 280m - 340m 85m - 90m OW = 300m - 360m 90m - 95m OW = 315m - 380m 95m - 100m OW = 330m - 400m 100m - 105m OW = 350m - 400m Minimum multiplier of 3.5. Max multiplier of 4.0 Crack the Code on May 19.
It's HYPERBOLE and after 17 Pages, I think your Expectations are too high.. That's what I voted..

Passion could have received awful reviews and people still would have flocked to it. In many ways, controversial films are immune to poor or disappointing reviews. Any way you cut it, this will be big this weekend, and all summer.

I'll change my prediction once more. I remain the same on the opening, but add a worse multiplier. This will be QUITE frontloaded and WoM won't carry it.
Opening weekend - $91.5 million
Total gross - $247 million
