For a movie that isn't tracking well, Poseidon is getting a ton of screens. I suppose theaters don't really pay much attention to tracking and just assume super-wide releases demand more screens? That didn't pay off well for mine last weekend, when they unexplainably gave Hoot two and it barely racked up $700 in sales over three days.

The reports of 10pm shows by notfabio are right in line with a $20m opening.

Just how packed were the 10pm shows: 50%, 20%, ...?

Average around 30-40 people in the few theaters he tracked.

If Poseidon scores below 20 mil this weekend, it might teach WB (and other studios) not to release a poorly tracked movie ultra-wide on multiple screens with 10pm Thurs. shows no matter how much $$$ they spent on it.

notfabio reports fewer than a dozen people per show for the first two shows at the locations he's tracking. Similar report from Rolling Thunder. Sub-$20m looks pretty certain.

I guess it shows that WB shouldn't have remade Posiedon or that people don't want to see disaster flicks anymore.

Update: My theater reports current Poseidon business as "embarassing" and says that a sub $20M weekend is "very likely".

you're in Kentukcy. Hardly a good representation of what's going on in the cities.

I wouldn't say his theater is a bad respresentation, actually. I believe he called a disappointing opening weekend around this time last Friday for Mission: Impossible III. Even the 10:00PM showings from last night did awful, though not unexpected.

I'm not sure why they'd even bother with 10pm screenings. Not being a sequel, Poseidon just wouldn't have that kind of demand regardless.

Since not much is happening this weekend, here is the booking info for the next one:

Early SoCal Megaplex Bookings 5/19

5 DA VINCI CODE
4 OVER THE HEDGE
1 SEE NO EVIL

No DA VINCI CODE pre-open midnights.

HEDGE right now is the same as MADGS booking a week out, a fifth screen was added as a split with Longest Yard a few days before. In this case a fifth digital is looking likely even though POSDN was booked just this week in digital. Really, it's that bad today.

Kurt Russell and Josh Lucas = Box Office Poison x 10

Poseidon supporters must be getting that "sinking" feeling by about now.

Kurt Russell is smart enough to diversify his resume: Miracle, Dreamer, etc. His career should survive this.

I wouldnt worry too much about the 10pm screenings - they hold no water for a film like this.

Regardless - this is on track with my expectations of being a dissapointment.
