Obviously it isnt going to be based on the MMORPG, it's going to be based on the warcraft universe in general.

On a side note, I'd love to see Blizzard make an animated movie out of this. Their CGI animations at the end of each campaign with Warcraft III were stunning.

So it will be based on the warcraft universe but not warcraft 3 itself? that sounds rather stupid because warcraft 3 actually has a decent storyline and the entire thing spawns from there. its main characters (iladdin, arthas, stormrage,warchief) were characters with extreme depth.

adapting anything that is blizzard scares me. Blizzard is a company thats more thourough and careful about its products than any gaming company i've come across. I guess i'm glad that the adaptation is warcraft. if the movie studios were up, blizzard would be smart enough to keep starcraft away from them. screwing up starcraft is a no no.

world of warcraft uses characters introduced with warcraft 3. world of warcraft is based after the events of warcraft 3. there have also been hints that certain future story line aspects of the frozen throne would be incorporated into the world of warcraft game itself.

in terms of story, they both share the exact same world.

I agree with Baba. Why not just call it Warcraft instead of World of Warcraft. WOW is just an online game, it would be like calling a Final Fantasy movie , Final Fantasy XI based on the online game. Unless the premise for World Of Warcraft movie is if characters try to argue with each other about campin spots but cant attack each other because its a no fighting zone, so they only way around this is if the orcs lure some critters into the humans spawn area and have them do the dirty work for them without engaging in battle then the title makes sense

also if they talk to some side characters, the speech should be repeated again and again.

Does WOW has some story actually? If not, they could easily just use the settings, characters in the movie, with completly different story.

Or just Legendary Pictures don't know the difference between WOW and Warcraft.

It's not going to be based on the MMORPG. They just mentioned WoW because of how huge the game is.

But, they could easily take a lot of the backstory from WOW and turn it into a movie.

(though as Groucho pointed out, it WILL be a video game movie, and therefore will probably suck)

They are using WoW because the story is more undefined. Instead it is just a world, with races and heros.

They can craft and tell whatever story they want. If it was simply Warcraft they would be restrained in some ways by the existing storyline. This storyline will be totally new and unique, and will likely be a launching point for a new game.
