Could The Da Vinci Code Kick The Passion Out of the Top 10?
Oh the irony of ironies!
What am I talking about? Well, I have this odd feeling that we could have a Shrek2/SM2 combo this summer with DVC/POTC2, except reversed, and perhaps higher-grossing. I just think that, objectively, DVC has so much going for it. The story is basically very riveting; there's no way a book can sell so many copies without having an interesting storyline, and DVC's storyline is very interesting.
Also, the 40m book sales are nota good indicator of the number of people who have read the book, because books have tremendous turnover rates. Each book is usually read by five to twenty people, so it's likely that 100m+ people have read the whole or parts of the book in the US, or maybe just even thought of it. Aside from a few titles, practically no books can lay claim to such a wide readership. And well know how big a commitment reading a book can be, so as far as I'm concerned, having so many people reading the book is a better indicator of potential audience membership than having a few tens of million of people who have seen the first installment of a film.

Not a chance. Passion involved a pretty popular book - I think it's called the Bible. Many people I know still think of DVC as being completely fictional, and if others feel the same, that could suppress the controversy needed for a tremendous run.

Huh? Of course The Da Vinci is fictional! There's not an ounce of truth in it, and the theories were old stuff even by the Middle Ages!
That's not the point though. It works great as fiction.
And yes, The Passion was based on a popular book, but many Bible-based films bomb too. The Passion was a phenomenon. No comparison with any other film is just, really.

I actually just saw a clip of the opening scene when Langdon is describing the mona lisa and how the left side is emphasized over the right and stuff and it was kind of boring.. i hope that the movie isn't that boring... if it's not then it may be a hit. Just as the passion gave ppl a reason to go to church/become practicing again, this will give roman catholics who are not practicing some ammo to throw at the ones who do.

So a semi-fictional book is gonna knock an entirely fictional book out of the top 10?
Sounds good to me

Actually, quite a bit the New Testament is factual even from a secular view. If anything, there's more fiction in The Da Vinci Code.
But I'm ruining your witty comment

Not that jesus had kids, but why attend mass when you could potentially be getting a biased/wrong account of jesus' life. As a result of this inability to get at a truth, I shall "pray and show my respect to god/jesus in my own way without going through chuch."
I have heard that line in " " sooooo many times by non practicing roman catholic portuguese people.

But if you need this book to argue that, I'd say you have more important issues to deal with There's so much else to use!!!

Since we're speaking about children: I am in fact from France, and descended from Jesus. That's what the "J" in my name (Honore J. Christophersone) stands for.
Are you impressed?
Oh yes you are!
Yes, I said you are!
Stop questioning me!

It would be released before POTC2, so in this situation it would unseat the Passion.

God, I hope so.
And if Pirates 2 is frontloaded enough, it could kick Passion out of the top 10 before Da Vinci has a chance to get there.
I think there'll be at least one new film into the top 10 after this year.

I agree with the 2nd poster. Not a chance. Now I do think 300 million is certainly possible but this won't get near POTC

I think the reviews are going to decide this one.
And after opening weekend, it really depends on audience reaction. If they are as enthusiastic as Passion's, then it prospects for it's legs will be good, and it could push Passion out of the top ten.

I don't see how even the quasi-Christians are going to get enthusiastic about a non-virgin Jesus, much less the fundies.
