It's economic naiviety to assign the same value to POTCII as to POTCI... The first spawned itself PLUS the sequel... The sequel doesn't add as much future value...
It's a slump, comparing to last year is the weakest comparison...

The fact that M:I-3 is underpermforming is a GOOD sign...Audiences are obviously waiting for that big summer movie they want to see, now we have to figure whether it is Pirates, Superman, or Da Vinci (Cars will be big, but nothing out of the ordinary for Pixar or computer animation numbers)

MI3 did not Underperform, Im sorry but I will say it again, Mi2 was one of the worst renowned sequels in the lines with Beverly Hills Cop 3, Rocky V, Batman and Robin. I'm sorry for those that loved it, but because the first was so great, thats why it improved over the 1st. The new film had a lot going against it and opened in a very good spot, I still think it will pull a 3 multiplier for around 53 million.
From KJ, I suppose its a disappointment, but its a hit considering the quality of the last film.

There have no been no breakout hits other than Ice Age 2. Even that is a question mark, since the final total may not even pass Ice Age's adjusted total. That is more worrisome since Ice Age 2 had a 50% bigger weekend than Ice Age.
Jodie and Denzel could not get Inside Man to $100M even with excellent reviews.
M:I3 is a disappointment.
Poseidon seems destined for mediocrity or less.
DVC is an adult thriller. So no big openings but still should do very well.
Over the Hedge and X-3 should do well. How well is the 64K question.
June and beyond: only three biggies, Cars, SR and POTC2 left to save the day.
A couple of the biggies disappoint, this could be the Slump the Sequel.
i disagree. this year we have had some disappointments, but other than that, mediocre films have performed better than expected. sorry, no slump this year

A little early to call it another slump when we're 5% ahead of last year.

People, read IT carefully. I mentioned that it could lead to a slump.
@theGun: I don't know what rock you are living under. MI:3's opening day is a disappointment. It is behind the OD of Van Helsing which was awful and was panned by critics and auds.
As far as MI:2 affecting MI:3; That is pure BS. MI:2 had multiplier of close to 4.

Dont forget - even in the mega years like 1999, 2001-2004 - the BO is not up every week on the previous year. Sometimes its up - sometimes its down. The key is by how much it is up or down.

Mission: Impossible II had a 3.36x multiplier when you take out the $21 million it made prior to the opening weekend. Even when you count it, it's a 3.72x multiplier. It was considered frontloaded for 2000.

There probably wno't be a slump due to the better than usual movies coming out this summer (Far better than last summer).
But then I read stuff like this and it makes me wonder if it will affect the box office:
WASHINGTON - High pump prices are pinching the pocketbooks of seven in 10 Americans, a financial hardship that more middle- and higher-income drivers say they are beginning to feel, an AP-Ipsos poll found.
With gasoline prices topping $3 a gallon for regular unleaded in many areas, people say they are driving less, cutting short vacations and curtailing their use of heating and air conditioning.
"Now, I'm just going to work and coming home  not doing anything else," said Kathleen Roberts, who makes a daily, 100-mile round trip from York, Pa., to her teaching job in Baltimore.
