Post Social skills - Are you a social person?
Well, I think the title of the thread is pretty self-explanatory. Do you consider yourself a social person? Do you like going to parties, do you like being surrounded by many people? When you go to a new place, do you easily get along with most people or are you usually more of a quiet guy who needs time to get new friends?

How much of a social person do you consider yourself?

Personally, I have become a very social person over the last 4-5 years. I haven't been like that at all, have always been rather shy when it came to learning new people and making acquaintances. However, it has changed shortly after my arrival in Germany. I started getting more and more outgoing and now I usually don't have any problems getting alöong with anyone and learning new people soon when I get somewhere. But as I said, it hasn't always been like that.

Creative people are somewhat introverted, so I do have my times where I prefer to be alone, but that's usually when I want to get some writing done. Years of being onstage broke any shyness that I would have had, but I was never really the shy type before that anyway. I'm easy to talk to, and I can break the ice pretty fast so everybody's comfortable. I'm not shy about approaching girls, unless I think that angle will be cute to them. I'm not shy about meeting new clients or first meetings with somebody at a party.

Lots of people are very afraid to just be themselves around new people, and I've never got that. Confidence may play into that, or perhaps the person thinks people are assholes, and doesn't care to socialize anymore than they have to. I'm usually friendly and joke around right off the bat, and I love saying very odd things to total strangers, just to watch the look on their faces.

Though I'm relatively find around large groups of people unless I dont know most of them, I usually prefer being around people of groups of no more than 3 or 4 (6 at best). I've had bad experiences with larger groups cause

a) I generally hate people to begin with
b) I do not believe in casual relationships of any kind. If I'm sitting with you for 6th time out of choice, its mainly cause I wanna get to know someone at an individual level, not in the dynamics of a group of people.

YEs.

Yesterday someone said hi and managed to say hi back.

Mhmmm.

:P

What do you mean social person, and as in having social skills?

I DONT KNOW. On the one hand I can be very sociable (I jsut know I'm spelling that wrong) and can easily carry a conversation with someone even after talking to them for just a few minutes, if its someone I feel comfortable with. But then what makes me be comfortable aorund someone? I dunno.

And on the other hand talking to people I don't know is...I feel nervous, and I'm also a shy person, I guess? Heh. And I can be aorund someone and I can just stare at them, and stupidly try to carry on a conversation, and fail miserably and I end up having one of those moments with awkward silence.

Of course it's better for me if I jsut think it's they that are boring

Blah, you and your silly questions.

It depends where I am or who i'm with. I would say yes I am cause I have no problem making new friends or getting to know people. People seem drawn to me partly cause i'm badly burned and they feel the need to talk to me :? at those times I paste a faker smile on my face and talk with them. but yeah I would say I am very good with people.

I think that gives the word "phone sex" an entirely new definition...

Its akward to say it, but I feel so sorry for you Appy. I don't know if sympathy makes you mad and what not, but I feel sorry, because you are such a wonderfully nice person. There is a girl who works next door to the family office who is badly burned, and when I try to talk to her sometimes I think she puts up that fake smile, too. :(

I'm a social? It depends on with whom you would talk.

I myself am very hard to talk to IF you don't know me. I don't talk to people I don't that well. Ask any of my friends, and they will tell you that I seemed very cold when we first met. I don't open up very well. People that I've known for years I've never really talked to: there's a guy in my Algebra class who's been in at least two of my classes every year since the sixth grade. Never REALLY talked to him in my life.

But once I am open enough to talk to someone, I find it difficult to stop talking to them. Which is why it's so hard for me to make friends, because I don't open up. At all. It's a surprise I've made any friends this year.

To date, only one has had such an effect on me to where there was no buffer stage: chemistry was automatically there, and I wasn't afraid. My dear and close friend (with whom I have a *slight]* ::clears throat:: infatuation) Cecylia. We're going otu tonight for my birthday. So hooray for me!

I find it easier to be social online. I know it's easier for most of you too, since a majority of people online use it as a refuge from their own life. I think it's because we all share that common link that it's so easy to socialize with everyone else.

But that's just my thoughts on it.

Thanks. I normaly don't like it when people try the whole sympathy thing.

I am not a social person at all. I've always been kind of introverted, but in the last three years I've been practically a hermit.

I'm too weird to be social.

I have to be a very social person, and possess excellent social skills, if I may say so and still sound humble.

But, I pretty much agree with bABA. I like social situations where I know the people very well and in a smaller group. I hate the situations with big groups of people you only kinda know, and then you have to make pleasant conversation about the weather. These are also the people that also ask you constantly about your job and want to be entertained with gory and/or exciting "war stories", or want legal advice about a divorce or ticket.

There is one other social situation I hate. When the Best Buy guy asks me if I want help for the 1000th time. Or, the cashier wants to know if I want 8 free issues of Entertainment Weekly and Sports Illustrated and wants to know if I know about their $500 online survey and that I can buy an extra warranty for the $15 portable CD player I'm buying. I'm going to 'throat punch' the next employee that does any of those!

I am sure she is.

And so is Hugh Hefner.
