I actually don't think POTC2 is a lock for 300 mil+ and beating the first. Lots of sequels have had very beloved originals, and they just ... haven't done it. Ghostbusters 2, BTTF 2, Godfather 2, Temple of Doom, Empire(right?), etc.

As Magnus said that was before DVD back in the 70s or 80s. Now people are more likely to catch WOM hits after they are in theaters.

Well, I did say "story" in lieu of "book", LOL. 'Cause honestly, I'm in the middle of reading the junior novelization of the first movie, and I'm now *craving* for an adult novelization similar to the Star Wars books...
Maybe I shoulda said plotline instead.... The *plotline* is getting rave reviews; everyone's even more excited about seeing the movie now; much more excitement, and people will spontaneously combust.

Hot Topic is already getting T-shirts, Claire's is getting various accessories, grocery stores are getting the cereal, gummy snacks, and just today, PotC2-marked Lunchables were discovered.
Disney Store already has some apparel and an official-tagged girls' Elizabeth Swann costume showed up on Ebay (showing that adults and kids alike will be able to dress up for the midnight showings).
The PotC2 trailer was on the Chronicles of Narnia DVD, which came out this Tuesday. Disney's "The Wild" comes out a week from today, and it seems the best movie with which to premiere a full-length theatrical trailer for PotC2.
Total Film Magazine has already had more than one PotC2 article, and a few other magazines (Empire, Variety, etc.) have done articles already as well.
Oh, and Scholastic apparently made a mistake, and several school book fairs across the country have been selling the junior novelization of Dead Man's Chest over the past few weeks. So several fans already have the book, and many have already broke down and read it (and given the story RAVE reviews).
Disney's doing a good job of slowly and steadily releasing stuff rather than one big push near the end; this should keep people from feeling like the movie is being pushed upon them.

As I have said on BOM I think Pirates 2 will win easily.

Definitely. I loved both trailers, but Pirates' is more effective. Superman will struggle to $200 million, and Pirates 2 will fly past $300 million.

the sup-trailer sucks but the fans are out there so it will make 200.
Potc2 will make 300m+. it has a much wider appeal.

Im not all that interested in either - but the POTC2 trailer was better.
Superman looks like a remake of the 1978 version. It offers nothing new like Batman Begins did.

The trailer effect is negliable at best. Pirates was always going to be bigger.

The last 5 pages of this thread has been 80% about Pirates.
If I weren't lurking on this movie site, I wouldn't even know there was a Superman movie coming out.
Whereas fans started anticipatin Pirates 2 when Pirates 1 was still in theatres.
Comparison of the merchandizing is sketchy at best. Kids have been wearing Superman costumes since, well, 1938 I guess, movie or no movie. Pirates is a brand-new fandom.
Pirates is going to have a monster opening weekend. Superman might catch it on legs, but I doubt it.

I dont care for either.
So as an outsider i say...
Superman Returns
4200 theaters , 15.000 pta , OW : 63 million , 100 million in 5 days , 60 % drop second week to 25 million and a final gross of around 220 million ( somewhat like War of the Worlds )
POTC : Dead man`s chest
4000 theaters , 18.000 pta , OW : 72 million , 120 million in 5 days , 40 % drop second week to 43 million and a final gross of 340 million
POTC wins easily.
I think the battle will be between X- men and Superman ( witch i also believe X-men will win )

Yes. It may change in the future (a la Shrek 2) but I doubt it.

It won't be moved to Wednesday. Moving it closer to competition and further away from the opening weekend record is, like, the opposite of Disney would want. I think they have some common sense.

Seriously, it might sound like crazy talk, but I'm beginning to think Superman Returns will have trouble breaking 140 or 150 mil at this point. All along we've been comparing it to BB, saying that it's WOM will be similarily good and that will come in handy to save it from disgrace. But the early word is that the movie is BAD. And it won't surprise me at all if it gets trashed, that trailer was ridicoulous.
It's legs were going to be bad anyways because of Pirates 2 and natural frontloadedness, with good WOM. But with bad WOM? It'll be amazing.
I could possibly see a run very similar to The Hulks. 60 mil opening, followed by a -67%-69% drop in it's 2nd weekend and -50%-55%s in the weekends after. About a 2.1-2.2 multiplier like TH's, 120-130 mil total.
I wouldn't bet on it yet, and I still think it'll make around 165 mil total, but damn. It doesn't look promising.
