anyone seen the trailer for this? Saw it yesterday, and its very odd. Starring Kirsten Dunst as the royalty herself, it has this very fluid feel. No peaks and valleys, no tears, and this very monotone modern rock (?) song. Anyone else getting a feeling for this?

I saw it too. It was indeed odd. Feel like a teaser, and I had no idea who Marie Antoinette was and what the film was about.

Yeah, I saw it with Memoirs yesterday as well.

I love the trailer. I'm not a big fan of Kirsten Dunst, though, or the Virgin Suicides.

I think it looks terrible. It looks like a period piece trying to appeal to the "hipster" crowd.

And I LOVED Lost in Translation. Is Sofia Coppola discovering crack, or is this hideous mismarketing by the company trying to appeal to the eclectic-ites?

Well, oddly enough, the teaser had a very dreamscape feel to it. I actually have much higher hopes for this than either Lost in Translation of the Virgin Suicides, neither of which I was all that fond of.

I don't think it's wrong to update her story, and honestly, the period feel of the piece was completely intact. it's more likely the soundtrack that felt mismatched, but it was a very intentional pairing, and I'd love to see how she navigates that in the movie. Dunst seemed very "bright eyed" which is odd considering how brutal and conniving Antoinette is historically represented. I'd want to know what Coppola's historic reading of the women is. Dunst seems a bit young, so I'm not sure what "time" in Marie's life Sophia is aiming for.

I also noticed the blaring pink and type-face she used for the title. It seemed...odd. This is a very hard movie to figure out, which I actually enjoy.

I thought the trailer was interesting and well-done. Even if some didn't like it, it certainly has distinguished itself from the typical period piece films.

As far as I know, no one's made a thread on this flick as of yet (at least, the pants search engine didn't bring anything up), but it's the latest from Sofia Coppola, and it stars Kirsten Dunst and Jason Schwartzman.

I personally have very little interest in the film. It looks rubbish. That said, the release of the French poster heralded the following comments from I Watch Stuff. And I found them so hilarious, I thought I'd post them here.

Only one woman I know wears a hat so carefully positioned over one eye...Carmen Sandiego! I knew you were in France, you bitch.

I'm not getting good vibes from this. I'm not in the mood for another melodramatic period piece (ala Vanity Fair) or a über-hip spin on a classic/historical tale (see Luhrmann's R+J).

Even if it manages to be as fun as Domino in terms of the whole music video feel, I'm not sure it'll work considering the period and whatnot. It could end up being pretty terrible.....

We'll see. The more press we get, the sooner we can figure out whether or not this is something to see. I'll probably go if only to see what Coppola has come up with, but I'm not a subscriber to her fan club just yet.

I used to play Where in Time is Carmen Sangiego on my dad's computer when I was in middle school. Ah...memories.

You know, I don't mind that French Poster actually. I only saw a teaser trailer ages ago when I started this thread, and I thought the mix was odd. But it wasn't completely awful. The music and images felt very distant, like looking through haze. I assumed it was just because it was a teaser, but I wouldnt mind someone trying to do a biography that wasn't equipped with period music and period meticulous research. It could be a movie more about her legend, her legacy so to speak, and how she gets picked up in modern culture today.

That being said, Coppola isn't a very strong director, and I hate how glaringly obvious and uncreative her storylines are. Her strength is aesthetic, so I expect Marie Antoinette to be very pleasing to sit through, but not all that profound upon later introspection.

Yeah I saw the trailer a while back. It looks...uhh...interesting? I guess.

To me it just looks like yet another over-hyped, star-driven period drama that will end up being just that - overhyped.

We'll see though.
