If you don't think this is going to rock? You need to Netflix the "Alias" and "Lost" pilots. Like now.
Youngsters will no doubt play Jim and his best Vulcanian buddy. But might we see Nimoy and the Shat in their futureclothes one more time as well??

'Star' treatment for J.J.

J.J. Abrams is becoming the next Gene Roddenberry.
Paramount is breathing life into its "Star Trek" franchise by setting "Mission: Impossible III" helmer J.J. Abrams to produce and direct the 11th "Trek" feature, aiming for a 2008 release.

Damon LindelofDamon Lindelof and Bryan Burk, Abrams' producing team from "Lost," also will produce the yet-to-be-titled feature.

Project, to be penned by Abrams and "MI3" scribes Alex Kurtzman and Roberto OrciRoberto Orci, will center on the early days of seminal "Trek" characters James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock, including their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and first outer space mission.

Deal reflects ParPar's bullishness on "MI3," which launches worldwide next weekend, and underlines the goal of Paramount chief Brad Grey and prexyprexy Gail BermanGail Berman to re-energize the pipeline via high-profile tentpoles while revitalizing the Par brand with top-tier talent such as Abrams.

"MI3" is the first pic to be released that's been greenlit by Grey.

"Star Trek" has been Hollywood's most durable performer other than James Bond, spawning 10 features that have grossed more than $1 billion and 726 TV episodes from six series.

Decision to relaunch "Star Trek" comes less than a year after UPNUPN pulled the plug on "Star Trek: Enterprise""Star Trek: Enterprise" amid dismal ratings following a four-season run and four years after "Star Trek: Nemesis""Star Trek: Nemesis" turned in the worst performance of the 10 films with $43 million domestic.

Original series created by Roddenberry launched in 1966 on NBC and ended in 1969.

During the following decade, the original 78 episodes of "Trek" became staples in syndication and helped mobilize the fan base along with conventions, books and merchandise. Paramount released "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" in 1979 and saw domestic grosses hit $82 million. The next three films grossed a combined $263 million domestically, so Paramount started the second TV series, "The Next Generation," in 1987, with Rick Berman and Roddenberry co-exec producing.

no one cares about spock or kirk anymore... its over done- especially if its with diff actors.. whats the point of that!!??- its the actors that made those characters- no one can do them like shatner and nimoy.

jj abrahams doing trek??? intriguing, but no... also not a good idea. trek is cheesy and happy and presents a utopian idealistic version of the future... his work seems to be mostly angsty, doom and gloom.

I'm confident in Abrams' M:I-3, but I don't think it's possible to make a good Trek film these days. It's a dead franchise that needed to stop before Nemesis was released. And I certainly don't care about a prequel.

I'd welcome a Star Trek with less cheesiness and happiness (the first motion picture comes to mind).

As for young Kirk and Spock, personally, i don't really care that much whether it's them or some new characters, what matters are all the other little details, like what will they be doing in the movie, what's the story about, how's the direction, acting etc.

I'm happy to see Paramount dumping the old persons in charge and going with such a talent as J.J. Abrams (& company) for their next Star Trek outing. Here's hoping for finally seeing a trully great Star Trek movie...

Star Trek movies are now just a bad idea. They should have jumped on the voyager series while they still could. They should just concentrate on the tv show instead.

I say if anybody has a stab at a new Star Trek, Abrams is a good choice. As long as Paramount old the "Star Trek establishment" doesn't suck the life out of it.

I never really liked the Star Trek series and definately not a big fan at all of the Startrek movies or tv shows( they seem boring like Babylon 5 and Battlestar Galitica) I dont know if Abrams would make it better as long as he avoids all the unneccessary back and forth flashbacks that he has going

Yeah, Kirk and Spock BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN Style.. It'll be titled STAR TREK: BROKEBACK ENTERPRISE

Oh, I dunno. I'd rather they use established characters than some completely new crew and time period like they were going to do.... I mean, if we're gonna have a movie about the Romulan War, why can't we have Archer's crew instead of some completely new cast that we'll only have two hours to try to get to know? Using established characters from ST allows the viewers who watch the movie to already be familiar and therefore we can get straight to the story and therefore have more time for story vs. introducing characters.

So, I'd rather see an Academy movie featuring highly-established characters like Spock and Kirk than a Romulan War movie with completely new people that we don't know.

Star Trek kind of stopped being Star Trek with these new films. Name the characters something different and it could almost be any SF film.

Maybe they could do an animated version, like "Muppet Babies."
