Nine Lives: My posse needs to see this
So about this Nine Lives movie...
Just saw it last night, and it was absolutely brilliant. Directed by Rodrigo Garcia, son of Gabriel Garcia Marquez (author of One Hundred Years of Solitude), and released last October, the film chronicles the lives of nine women, each told separately in one single take.
The cast is huge: Sissy Spacek, Amy Brenneman, Dakota Fanning, Glenn Close, Kathy Baker, Joe Mantegna, Lisa Gay Hamilton, Holly Hunter, Jason Isaacs, Ian McShane, Robin Wright Penn. And although this was a small release, I'm frankly a little surprised it wasn't more of a breakout. It did appear on both Ebert and Roeper's best of 2005 lists, but I didn't see much more love for it than that (and I don't remember anybody on the boards having said that they've seen it).
It was fantastic, though. It is another one of those 'interconnected stories' films, but the film treats it in a way that I've never really seen before.
And let me tell you, the last scene is perhaps one of the most brilliant endings I've ever seen for a film.
So my similar-taste-in-film posse - that's Libs, MikeQ., andaroo, dolce, PE, etc., - I'm calling on you guys to rent this and tell me what you think.

I think it's one of the best films of last year.

I have a copy of it, will be watching it as soon as possible It was brought to my attention by Ebert, who included it among his top ten of the year.

Holy frak! Look at that cast list! It *must* be a good movie! And I absolutely *love* those interconnected-stories movies. I'll definitely try to find a way to see this.

I actually heard about this a week or so ago when I was flipping through the channels on, of all things, Entertainment tonight. The five second little snippet was enough to get me intrigued. Now I'm obsessed....I must see this.

I've got it up next in my Netflix queue. Both Ebert & Roeper included it in their top ten lists, and while they have often had dubious taste in films lately I've got to see if it lives up to the fuss. They say some of the year's best acting was in the supermarket scene with Robin Wright Penn & I forget who else. It is quite odd that it hardly registered a blip within the indie film crowd, considering the cast.

Yeah, I'm a bit miffed by how under-the-radar this one went. It has a 71% over at RT, which isn't spectacular but is still quite good.
A few of the critics seem to point out that some of the stories excel while others do not. I agree with this, but holistically, the film ties things together in the end in a way that makes even those weaker segments work.
But yeah, Robin Wright Penn is great in what I think is probably one of the film's stronger vignettes.

It looks okay but I'm always skeptical when a film appears to be nothing more than a series of short vignettes.

I was, too, to be honest.
But it's a whole lot more.
C'mon, my posse!

Well, I finally saw it, and loved it. At first I thought that the the segments wouldn't intertwine well but by the end I felt that it blended in quite well. The whole ensemble is fantastic.
So... yeah, I would highly recommend it to those of you who haven't seen it yet.

Trying to keep up with personal fetishes, Oscar clubs, and now such requests is too much for my Netflix organizing abilities. I promise to have it in the next round (which is taking forever to come....). This has been sitting in line for over a month.

Indeed.
Probably above all, I loved that the film had a great balance of hard-hitting segments (Lisa Gay Hamilton and the gun, woman in the prison) with subtler, quieter ones that didn't really materialize emotionally until the last frame (Glenn Close's scene, the one with Sissy Spacek and her daughter).
The only real weak link, I thought, was the second one with Sissy Spacek and hotel room. But even that one almost worked for me.
It'd be great if we could talk about this with more people. *shakes fist*

To be fair, I posted this before the Oscar club.
No excuses, please. None. *still shaking fist*

If you would have accepted my friend invitation, you would be able to see my queue is three miles long.

I searched Nine Lives on Blockbuster, and the only result I get is a film with a cast of Paris Hilton and a bunch of unknowns. Yikes. I don't see anything for this film. How am I supposed to watch it if freakin' Blockbuster doesn't even have it.
PEACE, Mike.
