As usual, I've spoiled myself with some of these comments and absolutely cannot wait to see it! Should definitely be in tomorrow's mail batch. The Marquise looks like a fascinating character; a hybrid between the wicked brats from Cruel Intentions and that sort of eccentricity that made Bancroft's Dinsmoor in the Great Expectations update so memorable.

She has a movie coming out this year with Amy Heckerling, the director of Clueless called I Could Never Be Your Woman.

And she's filming Stardust with Robert DeNiro.

But she's been away far too long.

For anyone who loved this film...

I would also possibly recommend Milos Forman's Valmont with Annette Bening and Colin Firth. Not nearly as good as Dangerous Liaisons (or even Cruel Intentions, imo), but it's the exact same source material.

I was happy to see the acting nominations the film received, but I was even happier to see its screenplay win.

A few initial thoughts.....I can't believe i've never managed to see this little gem before now! Fantastic fun, i just wish i had seen this before watching Cruel Intentions. The thing that really hit home for me though was just how much i miss seeing Michelle Pfeiffer on the big screen. She should have been one of the great leading ladies of our time, instead she's just had a solid career.

Pfeiffer and Close definitely deserved the oscar glory, such a shame they missed out they both gave great performances. Also a very deserving screenplay win.

Christian, I think it is a comedy and it co-stars Paul Rudd and Tracey Ullman. Hopefully it's going to be closer to Clueless than Loser, both Heckerling films.

I think she's also palying a witch in Stardust co-starring with Robert DeNiro. I think it's also directed by the guy who did Layer Cake. I haven't seen that, but he seems to be the hot new director.

Anyway, yeah, Peiffer really is a great actress who needs to work more.

I expected more. It's one of those movie I just couldn't get into. Loved Malkovich and Pfeiffer, though. Some of the dialogue was great too. B/B-

That was one of the movie's best lines. The delivery was great...very very effective.

The movie was great, but it just lost some of its impact to me because I pretty much knew how the whole story would go out. Without that, I would have adored the film even moreso. As it stands, it was still a great picture. What surprises me is that people here are praising Pfeiffer and Close to no end, but barely one mentions Malkovich who was at least equally impressive as Valmont. Glenn Close and John Malkovich are both in performances that belong to the very best of their careers. Actually, it is probably the best I have ever seen by Malkovich and that says quite a bit. Pfeiffer was good, but not as great as she is praised for. I have seen her better before. This is really Close's and Malkovich's film. The dialogue between the two is reat, especially its ice-cold delivery. The Best Screenplay Oscar was extremely well-deserved. The movie's ending certainly stands out the most. The final 3-4 minutes are pure satsifaction, seeing Glenn Close's image being crushed publicly. One thing I did not like about the movie, however, was the fact that Malkovich's Valmont never seemed to seduce Cecile, but rather did he seem to be raping her the first time they had sex. That was kind of awkward. Other than that, I find no big flaws in this movie. A deserving Oscar candidate.

dangerous liaisons is a great film, i must have seen it a dozen times. dont know which film won the best picture oscar that year, but i guess it was a weaker movie than dangerous liaisons.

I just finished rewatching it....and I'm still not crazy about it. It has its moments, and a great performance from Close, but I just feel completely indifferent to it. I don't really have much else to say.

It's better than Rain Man, though. Nearly everything is.

Oh I thought it was brilliant. I was a little worried in the beginning because for some reason I didn't realize it was a period piece and when films like that are bad, it can be quite a pain to sit through them (see Vanity Fair). John Malkovich impressed me the most of the cast, I suppose deliciously evil is the best way to describe his performance. I completely bought his ability to seduce all those women, perhaps he is not conventionally attractive but damn if I wasn't convinced. Of course Glenn Close is terrific as well, but Malkovich is on screen more often. And as with Malkovich it's same with her, not conventionally attractive but I could see her being able to get any man she wanted. The interplay between her and Malkovich was completely transfixing, you almost wish you could see those two go back and forth the entire time.

Michelle Pfeiffer was pretty good but her character was kinda one note in that most of what she did was cry and look constipated. I think Geena Davis deserved the Oscar for The Accidental Tourist over her, she had more to do with her role and really stood out. Can't say with Close since I haven't seen The Accused. Uma Thurman does a competent supporting job, nothing spectacular but it certainly foreshadowed her future greatness. Keanu Reeves isn't on screen enough to mess the movie up, though I did notice a hint of that (for lack of a better term) "stoner accent" sneaking in once in awhile.

I was very impressed overall though, and Cruel Intentions is indeed one of my guilty pleasure movies but it doesn't compare. The relationship between Gellar & Phillippe is the biggest sticking point as it isn't as well-developed as it is in this film...you never get the sense that they "loved" each other, at the most there was lust. Here you knew that there was something much deeper and more complex going on, plus you didn't have to worry about the creepy incest factor. Unless I missed something.

I would definitely pick Davis over Pfeiffer, yet I really think Close gave a superior performance to Foster's. The Accused was not a good movie.

Damn, that was absolutely fantastic. Close was perfect. The whole cast was perfect. So nasty, evil, cunning, and beautiful....

Why did this not *sweep* the Oscars?
