Have I missed something, or has there been minimal discussion on the issue here? C'mon, people!

So HALF A MILLION people marched at the rally yesterday in downtown Dallas.

And it's been reported that nearly 70 rights rallies have taken place throughout the country within the past few days.

Talk.

If you please.

We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands,
To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming!

I heard that May 1st is going to be a day of boycotting buying American goods. Anyone think this will amount to anything or will it be like the boycott of gas last year?

Freaking illegals!!!

What good is the law, if any dumbass illegal can break it and openly flaunt it. The reason this has never been an issue is due to the overwhelming greed of the business community. They want cheap labor and get it. The cost of these illegals healthcare, accidents (no Insurance), schooling costs is passed on to the citizens of this country.

Screw the freaking illegal Immigrants.

I'm 50/50 on immigration. Total open borders is just stupid, because, well, then there would simply be too many immigrants coming into the country. However, (to use a Maddox quote) saying that a Mexican doesn't desrve the benefits of America because he doesn't belong here in the first place is like saying a kid in a well doesn't deserve to be helped because he shouldn't have been playing by that well in the first plae. It's really kind of backwards.

America then:

Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me:
I lift my lamp beside the golden door.

America now:

Fuck those fucking Mexicans. Go back where you belong! Oh, and other illegals too, whatever.

The left needs to get out of bed with big business on the immigration issue.

The rallies are themselves a backlash against the so-called immigration reform bill passed in the House and that failed in the Senate. Because of Bush's low poll numbers, Republicans are having to float an explosive and divisive issue to rally their base. Last election it was gay marriage. This time it's illegal immigration.

America then:

Those immigrants want to work and wanted to become citizens of this great country.

America now:

Those immigrants want to work and feed their family without all the hassles of being a "citizen"

They do want to become citizens, and an amnesty law would make that happen.

But the people making the argument you're making OPPOSE such a law. Seems kind of contradictory, eh?

The gay marriage issue was brought to the fore by the left not the right 2 years ago. If they had just had a little patience they would right now be having someone appoint left of center supreme court justices.

Some people, generally lefties, try to mesh illegal immigration with legal immigration. There is a big difference between the two.

Illegals tend to harm the economy in untold number of ways;

1. Drive without licenses and insurance resulting in very high insurance costs for a lot of legal residents
2. Don't pay taxes and use up resources such as medical care for their kids and themselves.
3. Misuse government assistance such as food stamps
4. They have broken the law in entering this country and are angrily demanding fair treatment.

Since the businesses want them , they shall have them.

If breaking the law does not mean much, what next? Amnesty for rapists, child molesters and serial killers?
This whole thing is a freaking cruel joke on the people of this country who play by the rules.

The problem with your assertions is none of this actually harms the economy. Illegals have a neglible effect on insurance rates, if at all. They do pay taxes. They have virtually no effect on medicare or medical care in general, or public assistance. And they aren't angrily demanding anything except to be treated like human beings, which apparently is too much to ask of some people.

Yes, comparing immigrants to rapists and serial killers. Why not go all the way and just call them Nazis while you're at it.

It is certainly not unprecented for the United States to grant amnesty for illegal immigrants. The last time, I believe, was in the 1950's when the US granted amnesty for illegal immigrants from Cuba. I believe our current Secretary of Commerce is the son of just such immigrants.

My wife's car was hit by a fucking illegal immigrant last December who vanished into thin air after a few days. She completed her physical therapy just last week. Everything had to be borne by my insurance. They have already raised the rates for us since they consider it an incident though it was the illegals fault. Do not presume to tell me that these illegals driving without insurance has no consequences.

A lot of these illegals do use the emergency rooms causing our health insurance to sky rocket.

How can an illegal pay taxes if they do not live here legally? Most of them do the kind of work that gets paid in cash.

Why should only the illegals get amnesty? Because the business community wants a fucking free ride?

Breaking the law is just that. If there is a difference with other serious crimes it is the degree.

Illegals who commit crimes take off after commiting rapes, murders etc and cannot be traced since they moved back to some hell hole or being illegals makes it hard to find them.

I didn't say it had no consequences. I said it was negligible. And in the overall economy, which is what you're supposedly talking about, it is.

And how do you know he was illegal and not just uninsured? Why not blame your insurance company for raising your rates for no reason?

I think maybe you need to take a step back and stop trying to blame 11 million people for what happened to your wife.

Really? A "lot"? Is that from the Dept of Pulling Worthless Facts Out Of Your Ass. Care to back this up with numbers?

The problem with the health care system is the healthcare system itself, not illegal immigrants. There are currently 45 million uninsured American citizens. That's almost half the entire population of Mexico, and about 4 times the TOTAL number of illegal immigrants in this country.

The effect of illegals on emergency room visits hardly amounts to anything.

They pay sales taxes, property taxes, utility taxes, etc. The only major tax they don't pay is income tax, and given the incomes of most of them, they probably wouldn't pay that anyway.

We're not talking about illegals who commit crimes, and who should be caught and convicted and/or deported. We're talking about regular illegal immigrants trying to take care of their families and who are seeking a better life than they could find in their original homeland.

I oppose illegal immigration, although it really depends in a lot of cases.

Given that position, though, my thought is that it really, really needs to be made less difficult for immigrants to gain citizenship.

All immigration needs to be legal, end of story. I don't know if any of you've noticed, but America is HUGE. There's plenty of space for everyone.

Of course, legal immigration won't solve the problem of illegal labor. That will never be solved until we stop pretending that every job out there deserves at least $5.15/hr.

To all you immigrant bashers out there: Nationwide, the jobless rate for foreign-born workers fell to 4.6 percent in 2005, down from 5.5 percent the year before. The jobless rate for native-born workers fell to 5.2 percent last year, from 5.5 percent. The Census Bureau, which collects the raw numbers used to arrive at the percentages, does not distinguish between undocumented and documented immigrants.

http://www.charlotte.com/mld/charlotte/ ... 294204.htm

That's right, immigrants are less likely to be unemployed in the U.S. than the native-born.

I am against illegal immigration in any kind of way. There is a reason it is called "illegal", no?

Then again, immigration in the US is not as much of a burden for the US as immigration in Germany is a burden for Germany because our government is stupid enough to pay welfare for years and years without finally pushing the immigrants to get a job.
