$700+ million worldwide!
It should grab around $10-11 million in France, $18-20 million in Germany, $2.5+ million in Australia and about $20 million in UK (incl. previews). A $75+ million weekend is certainly in store.

Dr. Lecter wrote: I am pretty sure they did. Night Watch sold very well in foreign countries. It was quite a hit in Germany and did decently in many other territorries as well. It made $33,586,659 worldwide, so only half of its gross came from Russia. Add in the DVD sales, TV licences etc. I am very sure that Night Watch was a hit. Without counting alternative costs it surely was a hit. BUT advertising campaign in Russia was extremely huge and obviously it would be better for Channel One simply to sell its advertising time rather than to waste it for Night Watch. I guess, most of the money for worldwide distribution went to Fox. ~~~Archangel~~~ wrote: Anyhow, how big is the DVD market in Russia. As Lecter said, i'm sure the DVD sales and increased exposure to the stations would more than counter this loss in the short term.
The legal DVD market here is not so big, less than theater market.
BUT the thing is that we also have a huge illegal market. Bootlegged DVDs are everywhere, even in legal stores, the quality is quite good and the price is better than the price for legal ones. The state and the laws are too weak to change the situation. AND it is also legal here to download movies from the net at no charge (good quality, bad quality, excellent DVD quality - everything you want, even movies, which are not yet in theaters). For example, if you want, you can download Night Watch, Day Watch, Company 9, Turkish gambit from the net for 15 minutes. The legal movie industry loses hundreds of millions each year because of this. It's funny, that some movies are marked "for award consideration only" and come to the net thanks to award considerators.
I must strongly recommend you not to believe completely in russian box-office, because everything here can be sold and bought. And to buy some numbers and then say you've made a hit is quite simple. Such numbers can be good advertising tool.

The weekend estimate in Germany is...
2,400,000 admissions
That's astonishing.

'Meltdown' gets biz flowing at overseas B.O.
By DAVE MCNARY
http://www.variety.com/article/VR111794 ... id=19&cs=1
"Ice Age: The Meltdown" sizzled overseas with $93 million at 8,216 playdates in 45 markets.
Underlining the powerful worldwide appetite for CG toons, sequel generated the most heat at the foreign box office since the second weekend of "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" grossed $95.4 million in late November.
The strong performance of "Meltdown" in every foreign market portends well for upcoming animated fare such as "Cars," "Over the Hedge" and "The Wild."
"Meltdown" nearly doubled its offshore take from its opening weekend, thanks mostly to impressive launches in Germany with $17 million at 1,061, the U.K. with $16.9 million at 502 and France with $12.5 million at 858. The German debut (including previews) represented a stunning 71% of the market and set records as Fox's biggest opening and best launch for a toontoon. The BlightyBlighty launch (also including previews) and the French opening marked the second best animated debuts in those markets.
"Meltdown" has already cumed $156 million overseas and $272 million worldwide. With many markets amid spring holidays and with openings still to come for Italy, Japan and South Korea, the sequel's poised to far surpass the original "Ice Age," which grossed $176 million overseas and $382 million worldwide.
"Meltdown" opened impressively in Australia with $3.8 million at 388 and set records for top toon launches in Austria with $2.9 million at 120, Switzerland with $2.8 million at 136, Norway with $2.02 million at 125 and Denmark with $1.5 million at 93.
Holdover bizbiz stayed solid, led by Russia with $5.1 million at 459, down 40%; Mexico with $4.9 million at 1,112, off 44%; and Spain, down 28% to $4.6 million at 450. Latin American traction manifested itself with records set for best second frame in Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and Peru. Brazilian biz edged down only 4% to $3.7 million at 565 for a cume of $9 million.
Fox Intl., which staggered openings to maximize benefits from holidays in individual markets, noted Sunday that "Meltdown" would have grossed $114.9 million had it opened all 45 markets together. That would have been the best foreign opening since the distribdistrib launched "Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith" in May with $144.7 million in its first five days.
"Meltdown" has provided the foreign box office a badly needed jolt after several months of lagging performance that saw the best biz come from BVI's 2005 holdover "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe." Overall international biz for the weekend towered over the year-earlier frame, which was led by "The Ring Two" with $14.8 million.

Ice Age 2 broke the opening week record in Germany with roughly 3.6 million admission.
Right now it looks like it will have the best second weekend behind the three Lord of the Rings movies. It should tie the "fastest to 6 million admissions" record held by TTT, with a very small chance of even beating it.

Ice Age continues to sink competition with $54m weekend
Jeremy Kay in Los Angeles 17 April 2006
http://www.screendaily.com/story.asp?storyid=25857
Fox International's Ice Age 2: The Meltdown remained the runaway number one title in the international marketplace as it crossed $250m in its third weekend.
The hit animated sequel added an estimated $54m on 7,298 screens in 57 territories over the Easter weekend for a total of $250.5m.
Strong holdovers and low drop-offs powered weekend business, led by Germany's $10.9m on 1,111 screens for $35.3m, France's $7.4m on 863 for $23.2m, and the UK's $6.7m on 502 for $33.7m.
Elsewhere Australia added $3.1m on 388 for $8.4m, Spain generated $3m on 450 for $18m, and Brazil produced $2.6m on 519 for $12.2m.
Latest figures from Fox International executives put Russia on $17.5m, Austria on $6.1m, Switzerland on $6m, Belgium on $5.5m, and Norway on $5.1m.
Of the new openings, Hong Kong produced $829,000 on 45 and Thailand generated $516,000 on 110.
----
Huge 3rd weekend gross. Only HP1, HP2, HP4, SM2 and Reloaded have grossed more in the 3rd weekends....Ice Age 2 is on par with ROTK which also grossed $54m.
Lord Of The Rings: ROTK - $390,432,677 ($72.6m 4-Day or $54m 3-Day - 45/8826) Harry Potter 4: GOF - $332,149,623 ($93,927,844 - Australia - 57/11513) Star Wars 3: ROTS - $309,033,001 ($37,041,068 - 105/9630) Lord Of The Rings: TTT - $293.6m ($42.4m - 35/7573) Harry Potter 3: POA - $269.4m ($44.9m - Spain/Indonesia or $41.2m/$265.7m without Jap p/v - 48/10,000) War Of The Worlds - $255,375,000 ($28,960,000 - 68/6865) Ice Age 2: The Meltdown - $250.5m ($54m - 57/7298) The Matrix: Reloaded - $250m ($55.3m - Indonesia - 62/9300 - 9.1m tickets) The Day After Tomorrow - $243,592,915 ($33,413,682 - 67/8904) Lord Of The Rings: FOTR - $236m ($40m) The Matrix: Revolutions - $230.2m ($21.5m - 94) Troy - $222.3m ($40.3m - 58/9752) or $230.5m week King Kong - $222,445,814 ($28,619,108 - 56/6963)*New Years Harry Potter 2: COS - $208m ($58.8m - Australia/Spain - 32/8201 - 11.2m tickets) Spiderman 2 - $200,033,296 ($56,711,495 - UK/France/Spain/Netherlands/Belgium - 57/9318)
At this pace, and with Japan/Korea still ahead.....expect an international total around $425-450m, which when added to the $200-$210m Domestic gross will make this a $630-660m worldwide grosser.
While I don't think it is a lock for Top 5 in 2006 yet (with MI3, Da Vinci Code, Cars, Superman, Pirates, Happy Feet, Charlotte's Web all capable of pulling $600m).....it is looking very good indeed.
EDIT:
I forgot about Italy...LOL, this will be the 2nd time i revise my predictions upwards.....OK, my predictions - $210m Dom + $460m International for $670m.

Even though MI3 will underperform domestically, in total it will have a massive gross:
$546 m worldwide in 2000, w/ $330 m from overseas. I'd say there's a strong chance it could do $400-450 m + overseas this time around, for a $600 m + worldwide total.
DVC will do $450 m + overseas imo.
Cars could do $400 m + overseas.
POTC could do $900 m + worldwide.
I don't think Superman will do all that outstanding overseas. It was always more popular here anyway. Superhero movies (the biggies) haven't done all that outstanding overseas anyway, with Batman Begins, and X2 not outdoing their domestic totals. Spiderman is the exception, but the release dates had been instrumental in helping Spiderman 1 (precursor to Ep II), with Spidy 2 following that up with a similar total. Superman will need very good release dates far from POTC 2, Da Vinci Code, MI3, because those are going to be bigger events than Superman will be overseas.

The only thing helping DVC will be the action adventure angle which sells well overseas. The plot material will likely be bigger in Europe but I could see it vastly underperfoming in Asia and other areas.

UNITED KINGDOM - Weekend 2
1 - Ice Age 2: The Meltdown - $17,021,824 (£9,775,974 incl. $4.1m/ £2.4m p/v - 502 TC)
The 2nd weekend drop was quite huge, compounded by Scary Movie 4's solid opening. Look a bit deeper though and it's not holding too badly....pulling away from other kid flicks such as Incredibles, Wallace and Narnia.
Harry Potter 3: POA - $57,358,339 (£31,557,411/ €45,758,246 - $7,979,760/ £4,391,262/ €6,637,330, -82%/-54%) Harry Potter 4: GOF - $56,126,443 (£29,624,592 - $17,574,079/ £9,275,599, -38%) Shrek 2 - $51,997,493 (£28,510,031/ €41,339,545 - $12,933,493/ £7,097,154/ €10,290,873, -54%/-34%) Lord Of The Rings: ROTK - $49,688,947 (£27,989,784 - $12,692,042/ £7,149,427, -52%/-31%) Harry Potter 2: COS - $47,073,735 (£30,041,516 - $11,459,237/ £7,313,056, -61%/-27%) Star Wars 3: ROTS - $44,325,932 (£24,304,352 - $9,897,852/ £5,427,091, -62%/-51%) or $49,299,165 by Mon Lord Of The Rings: TTT - $41,920,696 (£26,154,322 - $13,107,551/ £8,177,801, -37%) Toy Story 2 - $41,765,817 ($24,264,690 week, +41%) Harry Potter 1: PS - $41,167,251 (£29,134,532 - $11,812,960/ £8,362,749, -49%/-15%) Star Wars 1: PM - $40,386,126 ($15,206,601 week, -40%) Bridget Jones: The Edge Of Reason - $38,438,950 (£20,691,687/ €30,002,946 - $9,376,398/ £5,047,315/ €7,318,607, -52/-29%) or $38,437,219 ($9,358,679) Actuals The Matrix: Reloaded - $35,947,336 ($6,188,919, -69%) Ice Age 2: The Meltdown - $34,581,198 ($6,398,332/ £3,608,531, -63%) Lord Of The Rings: FOTR - $34,463,595 (£23,698,891 - $11,380,782/ £7,825,995, -29%) Charlie And The Chocolate Factory - $34,457,236 (£19,422,510 - $7,880,233/ £4,441,851, -44%) War Of The Worlds - $31,942,355 (£17,568,570 - $7,656,122/ £4,219,120, -51%/-44%) Spiderman 2 - $31,123,263 (£16,663,060/ €24,161,437 - $6,706,267/ £3,590,463/ €5,206,171, -59%/-49%) Star Wars 2: AOTC - $31,223,720 (£21,436,645 - $8,673,829/ £5,955,107, -48%) The Incredibles - $30,890,300 (£15,944,309/ €23,121,529 - $8,141,598/ £4,187,280/ €6,073,835, -57%/-33%) The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Lion The Witch And The Wardrobe - $30,491,631 (£17,204,098 - $8,504,495/ £4,798,576, -40%) Wallace & Gromit: The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit - $29,618,259 (£16,688,112 - $8,282,555/ £4,666,723, -50%/-29%) Monsters Inc - $29,574,831 ($8,225,303, -37%) Meet The Fockers - $29,114,665 (£15,481,678 - $8,666,694/ £4,588,360, -42%/-37%) James Bond: Die Another Day - $28,122,284 ($8,351,912, -41%) The Day After Tomorrow - $27,783,778 (£15,124,655 - $5,901,382/ £3,210,352, -56%) or $27,977,476 Actuals Jurassic Park 2: The Lost World - $27,124,470 ($11,261,118 week, -28%) Finding Nemo - $27,084,100 (£16,139,415 - $9,939,819/ £5,923,138, -20%)

Surpassing even the wildest predictions, Ice Age 2 is displaying Rings like opening powers....monstering $37m in just 2 weekends. It's admissions has already passed 5m, and is just several days away from topping Madagascar's total (biggest animated flick of 2005 and the 2nd largest for the year).
If it continues like this, it will surely become the first film since ROTK to register more than 10m admissions total.

The Easter weekend helped stabilise the 2nd weekend drop, it's the 3rd largest for a CGI animated flick behind only Shrek 2 and Nemo. Comparatively, IA2's performance in AsiaPacific and Asia hasn't been as spectacular as in Europe/LatinAmerica...though for an animated flick, it is doing pretty well...

Yes indeed, actuals were up $6m.
1 - Ice Age 2: The Meltdown - $47,373,645 (Spain/Mexico/Russia/Brazil/Netherlands - 29/4605) or $64.2m week
2 - Ice Age 2: The Meltdown - $158,000,808 ($94,962,060 - UK/Germany/France/Australia - 49/8321) or $192.3m week
3 - Ice Age 2: The Meltdown - $263,192,823 ($60,337,957 - HK - 57/8303) or $291.5m week
Another huge weekend is in store with Ice Age 2 opening in Italy, Japan and SKorea. I don't expect the Asian openings to break any records. Italy might be a different story judging by how Madagascar opened last year ($7.4m).
I'm expecting another $60m weekend, pushing its total to $350m International.

SWITZERLAND - Weekend 2
1 - Ice Age 2: The Meltdown - $3,173,293 (or $2,762,494/ 3,596,215 SFR 4-Day - 139)
One of the more outstanding markets, Ice Age 2 has maintained its record pace and leads ROTK by more than $1m. It should easily cross $10m and depending on how it holds latter on, might surpass the all-time animated champion, Nemo at $12m. ROTK is the other target at $11m.

Quote: Globe still is hot for 'Meltdown'
In the absence of fresh large-scale rollouts of major studio titles, 20th Century Fox International's "Ice Age: The Meltdown" dominated the international boxoffice for the fourth consecutive weekend with an estimated $23 million from 5,486 screens in 27 territories. The animated sequel to 2002's "Ice Age" has grossed $317 million to date overseas, nearly double its comparable domestic cume. Its worldwide boxoffice tally now stands at $485 million. "Meltdown" opened in four territories, three of which were significant: Italy (an estimated $6.2 million at 644 screens), Japan ($1.2 million at 464 sites) and South Korea ($1.8 million at 234 screens). Notable holdover markets include the U.K., where it scored a whopping $3 million in its third weekend at 492 screens for a market cume of $42.7 million. (Frank Segers)
THR
Ice Age: The Meltdown had a meltdown at the overseas box office. The gravy holiday grosses are history.
It pretty much died in Japan in its opening weekend. Now it may barely pass $400M while it looked like it might pass $500M after last weekend. Even after adding 3 major territories, the weekend gross fell from $60M in the 3rd weekend to $23M in the 4th weekend. The drop excluding the new openers is a whopping 75%.

Hmmm, this is very disappointing in Japan. Japan has pretty much become the make/break market for all movies. Look at the boost it gave to Narnia late in its run!
Still, I expect at least $650 million worldwide. Should have good holds from now on.

UPDATE FROM GERMANY
Estimated 750,000 admissions in its third weekend (-55.5% from last weekend) for a total of 6,975,000 admissions.
Despite the big drop, it is still HUGE. It will easily end up as the biggest movie of 2006 in Germany. I really see no competition for it. After 18 days, it is already the #31 of all-time here.
To put it into perspective and compare it with other final admission counts:
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets - 9,693,596
Finding Nemo - 8,678,707
Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace - 7,978,480
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - 7,914,065
Men in Black - 7,437,419
Ice Age - 7,212,212
Ice Age: The Meltdown - 6,975,000 (est. after 18 days!)
Madagascar - 6,699,790
Harry Potter and the Prisonder of Azkaban - 6,545,279
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl - 5,978,657
Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith - 5,620,503
Shrek 2 - 5,312,463
Spider-Man - 5,186,528
As you can see, it's pretty darn huge. I expect it to get close to 9,000,000 admissions by the end of its run here, making it the biggest CGI animated flick ever here, the #1 film of 2006 and the 16th biggest movie ever here.

Well I do think it will be leggy in Japan. I think it will stay around for a few weeks it should still pass 400 million.

BOM reported the weekend total as $40M for Ice Age 2 and a total of $333M. Much better than the earlier report. The holdover drop was 50%. But the movie still tanked in Japan and S. Korea.
