Some people will go to great lengths to make Bush look like the ultimate villain. They may even go so far as to praise Soviet response to the Chernobyl meltdown.

I agree it's totally unfair. The Soviet response was just as filled with incompetence, political spin, and cronyism as the Bush administration's. No question about it.

If only it was just that.

People were kept in complete dark of the accident until early May, when Swedish scientists started to wonder where all the high radiation was coming from.

So what you're saying is that the old Soviet Union's response to Chernobyl was worse than the Bush administration's massive gross negligence, incompetence, spin, and cronyism.

Again, I agree.

Another difference? God wasn't punishing anyone with Chernobyl.

No, I'm just commenting on the irresponsible "reporting" by the WaPo opinion piece writers.

No? So you're saying that the Soviet response to Chernobyl was NOT worse than the Bush administration's massive gross negligence, incompetence, spin, and cronyism?

I just need to read one single line to know how much crap is in that table:

"Toll of preventable deaths (in Chernobyl) 19 years later: 60"

Maybe more like 60,000....

I know my locality was hit very hard by the fallout of chernobyl. Cancer rates across the affected areas have soared.

What they mean is that 60 is the number of people who died in the 19th year following the disaster, so in 2005. Just as there are people who continue to die 60 years after Hiroshima and Nagasaki due to genetic defects, etc. brought about by the atomic bombs. The number of direct casualties from Chernobyl amounts to around 4,000 (linky: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/4216102.stm)

Even then, I am sure the number of people who died of cancer resulting from the Chernobyl effects in 2005 was higher than just 60.

Wow, Krem, an ad hominem personal attack. So unlike you.

Sorry, I don't like to participate the way you want in your verbal fellatings of Bush. I wonder how many OPINION columns (which is what this is) you get outraged at and post here that go out of their way to apologize and cover up for the administration as opposed to portraying him as the devil. I don't recall any.

Are you at all capable of comprehending things beyond the party line? This has nothing to do with Bush. It may be hard for you to understand, but some things can be taken personally. If on April 26th, 1986 the wind blew south instead of northwest, my family and I would've been affected by the explosion, because the government decided to keep it secret. And now some asshole is praising the gov't response praises on the editorial page of a national newspaper. Is that so hard to undertsnad?

It doesn't?

If you don't like them praising the Soviet Union, then just say that.

And I AGREED with you that the Soviet response to Chernobyl was WORSE than Bush's incompetence and gross mismanagement of Katrina.

Jeebus. You don't like it when I agree with you. You don't like it when I don't. Make up your mind.

And again, my point was not about comparing Katrina with Chernobyl. Yes, both were horrible disasters that were compounded by the inept government response. But the point here was about an insensitive prick who decided to trivialize the wrst nuclear accident ever.

Its a competition now? We're stacking up killer stats for each side like if this was the World Series? Reporters are getting ridiculous. Soon a genocide of *only* 2 million isn't going to get to play in the *big league* with the 5 million plusers. Put it in the little league where it belongs, with less coverage.

Its ridiculous that you guys are even paying attention to this kind of garbage. No wonder news reporting is in crisis if this is the kind of articles they vacuously produce.

Beeblebrox you do realize you make little to no sense in this debate?

Krem pointed out quite plainly, as I was about to after reading the first few posts, that it is illogical to compare the two disasters at all. And yet you bring it down to a party line.

Yes, some people go to great lines to make Bush to be the greatest villian. I'm not saying he isn't but I'm also saying that article is ridiculous.
