cool, production has been rather slow, they would have had to rush the film with its origonal release date. looks like this page can float into oblivion till around June or July then

Next year's Narnia...or actually more like Lemony Snicket's. Not as well known as Narnia.

I think LOTR has really caused a hunger for Fantasy type films in December. I think this will do well - say $38m opening and a leggy run to $160m or so.

Doesnt seem to much competition in the kids film department around winter. I could see it making around 200 million

What's this one about? Is it a big dragon action epic? If so I'd say it could be a big hit, but then again, I'm not sure after Reign of Fire dissapointed.

Yeah, I really can't predict this one yet. I have no idea what it's about.

From what I read of the reviews of Amazon it follows the golden formula for success: you have some kid who learns about a whole world he never would have imagined. He comes to be powerful, which is of course his destiny (as probably prophesized) as the fate of the world depends on the events surrounding him. You have big battles, the villians are defeated...etc.

I don't know about the book sales, but it's even higher then LOTR or Narnia in the number of book reviews at Amazon, even if behind HP.

It should be a hit: 53m/237m

Bring on the sequels! ;)

It's pretty much just another version of Star Wars/Harry Potter, set in a Lord of the Rings landscape. The books are really poorly written though. The first one was ok, but the second was so bad that I couldn't get past the first chapter.

The movie should do okay. It's nowhere near as popular as LOTR or Narnia (just in terms of people who know about it), so I'm thinking about 40/150.

Well, it was written by a teenager. So that explains the immaturity in the writing I think.

I never bothered to read it.

It looks very unappealing from the portions I've seen. The Christian media is all over it though about its supposed allegorical connections. Could be another Narnia-esque appeal (though not as popular I imagine).

I love the books. I'm skeptical about how they will handle the dragon, but if this movie is
done right, it could be awesome. The book fanbase alone will push it over a 35M opening.
The rest depends on quality of marketing. If they're attaching the teaser to X3, that's a good
sign. So I'll go with 50M opening, and a finish of 175 - 240M (my guess 225M) depending on
quality and audience reaction.

If I remember correctly the book was written by a Christian teenager, so Christian media organizations are hailing this as the next big thing.

I suppose. It's doesn't have the appeal of any of those, nor the popularity. Did I mention the books are poorly written? I was very aware that I was reading a book. A book written by a teenager. I didn't sense any Christian allegories, but I suppose the Christian media just assumes that every fantasy novel has them now (except for Harry Potter, who is the devil. Go figure).

If I recall correctly, EW named Eldest (the sequel) the worst book of 2005. Even though I only read one chapter, I agree. It was brutal. I didn't understand where all the praise for the first book came from, but if it's the Christian media manufacturing it, it wouldn't surprise me.

I don't listen to movie critics let alone book critics. I think it's pretty clear the target
audience loves the books as Eragon is well over 1 million sold (anybody got a good source
for copies sold?) and Eldest is at least close as well. Not bad for a teenager, even if
everybody doesn't like it. I think most that don't like it feel that way because it uses so
much of other peoples work (LOTR comes to mind). But tons of computer games borrow
from that world so why can't another author? It's not like it's the first time.
Personally, I enjoyed reading both books a lot.
